The system is broke, props to you for attempting to build something of your own in it. It’s not easy to start a business in this era, Market is lowkey saturated for pretty much everything. Makes it so much harder. You can do everything right and ya still get fucked by the system and society. Working customer service really opens your eyes to how shitty and entitled people can be, they lackin compassion. Just straight abusing the workers and we trained to just take it. The culture has shifted so much not just with skateboarding but also graffiti and hiphop, i find it’s shifting into a more materialistic, attention seeking, look at me type thing. Just full of posers. Instagram has contributed to the watering down of the culture.. it’s just not real like it was, everything seems fake now. People don’t do shit because they love it anymore, they do it to impress others. Props to you for trying tho, sorry it didn’t work out.. many people in the same boat, dream chasing. Just adapt and re-focus find something new, your a really good speaker. Randomly popped up in my recommended and watched the whole thing. Keep going g.

then start gatekeeping and telling people "no". the problem is we became a society too scared to hurt feelings. sorry, but the only way to change that is to start hurting people's feelings. if america was a person, it would be a single mother who lets all her special little children run loose & wild and eventually that's gonna lead to a father figure coming back around with the belt out ready to whip some ass.

You made some great points and you hit the nail on the head when you said a lot of the kids these days are not joining the subculture ("the club" as you referred to it) of skateboarding and doing it for the long haul. It's back to the days, when a kids get a board as a gift and then three months later he's done with it. I even heard John Lucero say that he wishes more companies would go back to the days when a board graphic would last entire year (or even 2 years) instead of just one quick season. Long haul board graphics use to be brand icons, now that board graphics come and go so quickly, there are no brand icons that everyone (consumers) want to own. Also many kids (and their parents who are buying the boards) get tired of keeping up latest thing...in this economy it's too tough to keep with anything that requires spending.

The industry is very slow and its due to inflation, higher cost of living etc, most people barely getting by, and also skateboarding is a poor man's sport, You can make a skateboard last forever and that's less money for the shops, also everything online so no reason to go to a local shop. It's hard times man. Now everything is social media, no hype for parts/footage its just cookie cutter no feeling, its hit a plateau. Good luck with everything, keep your head up. I'm still skating at 31 and i've been at it since 10 years old, and even I'm tired (Knees get sore, I only skate 1-2x a week usually - this makes my board/shoes last way longer)

the industry produces very diverse products at low quantity which i think is strength and weakness of the industry.... but other similar industries trying very hard to make things at high efficiency and high quantity at lowish price... i think we lose a lot of potential skaters by the complexity of the products and low price low quality and high price high quality.... there is no great value for the products.... specially when money is tight for everyone... ....... i am in a much better situation i thought i would be .... and yeah things gets worse as you get older im 42 LOL .... but yeah i am moving forward and youtube is one of them ....

Man ,... i feel your pain . I helped build an indoor park in 1999 which was bicycle friendly . There was a bike / skateshop in the front and a park in the back . We managed to stay open for 2 years and created lifelong memories yet our generosity and taxes took a toll that was unsustainable . The idea was to build a park for enthusiasts however with an affordable $5 pr day membership we became babysitters rather than enthusiast procreators . I must admit whilst it was the lowest paying job i ever had it was also the most enjoyable . It broke my heart when the doors closed . A broken bone will heal yet a broken heart will not . Please understand that someone out there understands because at the end of the day that's all anyone really wants . To be understood . Thank You for being you 🎉

It seems like those of us who are 35 or older are all privy to how drastic the world, economy, and people in general have changed. Of course I realize the cliche of the older generation always complaining about the new one, but there has never been anything such as the internet (or more importantly, social media) until recent times. We are being conditioned to live digitally, literally, disconnected from each other on any real level and it seems like narcissism is greatly encouraged. The quality of technology has been increasing exponentially in the last 20+ years, as the quality of life (for us humans) has been plummeting down the drain.

I'm sorry to hear this. I've never seen a video from you or heard about your shop before this, but I wish you the best, man. Im 45, when i was a kid, all we had was local shops and our circle of skaters who supported it. Times have changed so much. Kids order online and big corps taking over markets. Skaters sell out to them so fast now. It sucks that skaters have no place that's safe to meet up and see new products. I used to spend hours watching videos and meeting up with friends to go skate. Skaters from other cities would randomly show up all the time. They were like chat rooms of today only in person.

I definitely agree that social media, sport brands and skateparks changed skateboarding for worse - it's been overhyped by tricks and videos, it's not about having fun on the streets with your local crew anymore. The whole skateboarding industry is unsustainable, board brands are not even making profit from the boards anymore, no matter how many do they sell because margins are too thin.

Really well thought out and honest speech my man :) At around the 11min mark.. you mention the industry's been sorta on a down turn since the Hawk days. Two thoughts here. One: Hawk's still around and a lot of the Brigade crew. Do you mean since Hawk "boards" or the skater? And two: (and I've only been back skatin' for 2yrs.. from a 30yr hiatus) but does your perception of the industry going down.. from the lack of "deck" variety? (Popsicles v shaped) Cause I'm an old guy.. and I'm certainly stoked how shaped decks are still available (and still coming!) Just my own thoughts. Good luck my friend!! :)

I thought I clarified by saying Tony hawk pro skate days (around early 2000s) .... meaning the game .... and there's google trend shows that ... oh yeah products definitely got better and more choices ... it has helped sellers ... it got much harder yo have all the products in one shop ... and profit margins are a lot lower due to competitive nature.... but anyways I'm 42 and still skating... it's really good for me .... @@2FTSK8 yeah it's tough... The old model (Pre social media) had so much anticipation for video drops... Each brand would put so much into editing parts and adding music and aesthetic/vibe... The entire industry would be waiting and clamoring for the video to finally come out. There would be massive "Video Premiere's". The old Alien videos, Habitat, Toy Machine, Es, Shorty's, Flip, Baker, Zero, etc.. It seemed like when a big new video dropped, it changed skateboarding as a whole... Styles would shift and change, people would try new tricks, and emulate the latest big pro. Brands would become bigger and more relevant with each video drop. Now everything is so instant gratification, no love goes into crafting the parts. Or video parts drop it's forgotten about in 3 days... fThere's so many people who blow up for a minute then you never hear of them again. Skateboarding is in a weird limbo of growing pains and trying to figure out the right way to run things... Anyway, I hope the best for it. You popped up in my feed this morning you were touching on a lot of things I've noticed as well...

I completely quit skateboarding after it had been apart of my life forever lol. Got over it… I don’t like falling. It’s hard to be good. You have to be very consistent and even then it just hurts rolling your ankle and falling on your elbow or your tail bone that’s the worse. I broke my wrist skateboarding back in 2014 and had to have surgery. I still have issues with it to this day.

Skateboarding hurts for sure. I try and skate at least 3 days a week. You are right, it takes a ton of effort to stay somewhat good at skateboarding. Keep at it, man. I genuinely believe skateboarding is so good mentally, spiritually and physically.

Might want to try flatland bmx . Be aware that there's no instant gratification however after your first year of failing 1000s of times there will be a few maneuvers you will master which will open doors to new maneuvers ( * I don't like the word " tricks ) . I'm almost 60 and I'm disabled due to work injuries yet flatland led me to meet and ride with the greatest people on the planet . Flatland is not in the x games as the crashes aren't big enough for the spectator to enjoy . Generally when I crash the bike falls yet I don't . Flatland is great for your mental , physical , and spiritual health . I'm not bragging yet my life has been unimaginably spectacular . I've many skater friends who admire the difficulty of the simplest maneuvers . Don't give up on the thrill of life morph into a safer skill . In the 70s there was no such thing as a skater or biker , we were just kids and we did both . Never forget how to play and you will always know how to play fair

@2FTSK8
@2FTSK8 27 күн бұрын
There are many factors goes into making successful skateboard company and first is probably what kind of people you have around you ... good skaters and trustworthy people... and second would how would build your brand.... styles .... and many more things to consider but if you have good first two .... What a fucked up way to look at life
@shanec8224
@shanec8224 Ай бұрын
@@friedBeanCurd it's not really a poor mans sport but it's becoming a poor man's business model. It's extremely hard to make a living in the industry. The brands that are able to keep at it are the biggest brands. The small start ups can't really compete. It costs the small brands a lot more because they can't buy materials at the big quantities, so they price their goods higher, but no one wants to pay more for essentially the same thing... So the big brands lower their prices and push them out... Also it's part of skate culture to hook your friends up, so when you run a brand or a shop, all your friends and associates want a hook up, and once skaters get halfway decent they all want to be sponsored so you end up giving away all your product.

@shanec8224

@@rustypotatos that’s the problem… it’s kind of expensive but most the people into skating are just getting by… so you get people that just hang out at the skate shop and never buy anything. Or you get people that just want hand outs and hook ups.
