2h quiet live study with me: PhD Defense Prep (study vlog)

There's a bit of a backlog of vlogs that I still have to edit/post so I guess this live studying I'm doing is a bit of a special sneak peek for the folks that watch ALL of my videos ;) I've submitted my thesis to the external examiner and an official defence date is set... EEEK! So I'm going to be studying a lot more! It's always nice to study with other people, so let me know if you enjoy these "live study with me" sessions :D
My name is Anne 😊 I'm a FINAL year PhD student at UBC. I do research in the field of drug delivery and nanomedicine. This is probably a very stupid question but why are you studying for a PHD defence?? It probably doesn’t make sense what I’m asking but I’m kinda curious as to how this works...😅 is there an exam component?

When you do a phd, you write a thesis which is based on original research. After you submit the thesis, you then have a phd defence known as a viva voce. Where experts from that field come and go through your thesis and ask questions and talk about your work. Because in your phd, you are the most knowledgeable in your area of research. Im not sure about other countries but in the uk, there will be 2 examiners- one from the university your in and one from another university who does research in the same field as you.

thanks for this!! yes in Canada we don't call it a viva but it's essentially the same thing! At UBC there's typically 4-5 examiners.
