Did our video help you? If so, consider buying us a beer: bit.ly/3feE6tJ
In this 4 part video series, we are going to walk you through all the steps necessary to remove the stock 3.0 Liter 3VZ-E V6 engine out of your 2nd Gen 4runner and replace it with a 3.4 Liter 5VZ-FE V6 engine.
In this part, Part 2, we show you some things we did in the engine compartment to prep for the 3.4 liter install and then we show you some specific things that need to be done to the 3.4 liter engine for this swap to work.
We're not going to show you every last detail, especially when it comes to pulling a 3.4 liter engine from a used or wrecked vehicle, stripping an old 3.4 liter engine and building up a rebuilt 3.4 liter engine because we already have a video series that covers that. Here's a link to that 4 part engine swap series: • Toyota 3.4 Liter 5VZ-F...

I swap the 3-0 for a 2.7 3rz-fe. On a 1992 Toyota pick up 4x4 extension cab. Plenty of power an a lots of room in the engine compartment. I crossed Mexico last year and yesterday came back from exploring the Baja California from Northern California. No issues. I love it

The 3RZ is a great engine. Nothing wrong with that choice. Just be sure to check the valve lash on a regular basis. They are known for burning up exhaust valves.

Absolute great video. I just watched eps 1. Very well done. Regarding the new cross over pipe, I would and have used some other locking nuts, called K-nuts. There are two versions of those, the almost white one is a high temperature version, that lasts a lot better. and it's locking and won't loosen or even fall off. A little bit expensive for what they are, but works super well, and can take a LOT of heat. I may add that if the owner of this car wants to add a turbo or a compressor, for example the exhaust manifold to turbo flanges should have the same high temp grade K-nuts. Cannot recommend them enough. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

Always get a lot if information from your channel. Now we just need you to do videos on 22re to 3.4 swap, that sure would put the icing on my cake. I'm actually getting things together to do this swap myself. Be careful with some JDM engines, with some conversions the exhaust manifolds and crossovers will cause problems. This might only apply to 4cyl conversions, just make sure to do your research before getting a powerplant. SAS folks or solid axle trucks period and you 4cyl folks too, a t100 2wd oil pan and sump (rear sump), dipstick tube ( dealer calls it a guide), dip stick, and a union. All on a local Toyota parts web sight.

That would be awesome, and I'm sure helpful for a lot of folks with the 22r and 22re platforms, no replacement for displacement. I'm using a gear driven tcase so a r150f to RF1A adapter is need, plus converting forward shift transfer case to top shit is also needed. So if anyone of your followers asks you anything about that, you'll have that info.

If you’re scared to hit your hands when hammering the bearing out, use a socket extension. I’ll often stick the extension in the socket with the socket backwards, so I have the most surface area possible on the thing that I’m driving. This prevents the socket from dancing around
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
I thought of that as I was editing the video. Yes, I agree. An extension connected to the socket would have been a better technique.

I love this series! So much helpful information, I'm planning on doing the 3.4 swap sometime near the end of this year (2022). Timmy what would you guesstimate the cost to be to do this swap with the headers and stuff along with swapping in a manual transmission into my 94 3.0 automatic 4x4 4Runner? Not looking for an exact amount because obviously that will change, just looking for a close guess since you are experienced with the swap. My guess is somewhere near 10k maybe more? Also are those headers and exhaust system California legal, is it easy to get a CARB sticker after doing a swap like this?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
I'd say 10k is a good guesstimate. I don't know if those headers would pass a smog referee in California. I bet the ORS guys would know though. Give them a call. They are super helpful Dudes. Glad you're enjoying the series. There's a bit of delay getting Part 4 out. We will problem get it out early February.

@TimmyTheToolman

Glad you like the videos Steven. Well, we can't get Hilux Turbo Diesel motors in the U.S. Even if you could, you probably wouldn't be able to get it smogged and registered but maybe in a state with very laxed smog laws.

Hey guys. Would you ever consider doing a video for a 3rd gen 4runner frame swap? That would be awesome!
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
That would be hard with our situation. We operate out of my home with no lift. A frame swap is much easier when you have a lift at your disposal so you can simply lift the body off the frame, strip the frame and swap over the parts to the replacement frame. So, until the time comes, if it ever comes, that I have a shop space with a lift, I doubt we'd tackle a frame swap.

Curiouse, I have a 94 3.0L 4Runner Manual 4wd with a bad engine, and a 96 3.4L 2wd Automatic with a good engine. How hard would it be to swap the 4wd manual assembly from the 94 to the 96? Would the 4wd assembly even bolt up in place of the automatic on the 96, not to mention the front 4wd axle and equipment from the 94 to the 96. Or could I just swap the transfer case to the back of the automatic? Thanks & loving this series for obvious reasons. Best wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman Жыл бұрын
Hey Keith, I don't have an answer for you about the 4wd swap because we've never done it. They are different generation trucks so I don't know if the transfer case from the 2nd Gen would be compatible with the 3rd Gen. This would be a question for a Toyota forum or maybe a Toyota Enthusiast Facebook page.

Ir you're asking why we didn't create a custom dual exhaust system, it's because that's not something we wanted to try to figure out. It's also due to the potential problem you'd have getting it approved by a smog referee.

You have the wrong engine code in your description. Only the Lexus ES300 and the Toyota Camry got the 3VZ-FE in USA (for example) for years 1992 and 1993. You need to change that to 3VZ-E (no F)... The 5VZ-FE (along w the Mark 2 3VZ-FE that was available many places after 1993 just not in USA) is highly related to 3VZ-FE, evolving from it. The (non F) 3VZ-E is more crude less advanced shall we say earlier engine on which 3VZ-FE was based.

@TimmyTheToolman Жыл бұрын
Transmission does not need to be converted. It can remain automatic or manual. If your transmission is an auto, make sure you don’t have a pilot bearing installed into the back of the engine. If you have a manual, you will need a pilot bearing in the back of the engine. Our hourly rate is $972/hour but will increase at the end of the month. - Sean

5vz is prone to overheating, wouldn't it be better to set 1uz?
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think the 5VZ-FE is prone to overheat. A vehicle that is stock with no modifications with the 5VZ engine isn't known to overheat. But, put aftermarket bumpers, armor, roof rack, bigger tires, and then drive that rig on a grade in extreme summer heat, then I'd agree with you that the engine can run hot. But, even a stock rig climbing a grade in extreme heat will run pretty hot as well. The key to not overheating is monitoring your coolant temp with a scan gauge or OBD II reader sending info to a phone app like Torque Pro and knowing when it's prudent to pull over snd give your rig a break. Ive done this many times in places like Death Valley. The stock analog temp gauge is pretty much worthless. By the time that needle starts rising, you've already let your engine get too hot. There's a big delay. Same goes for monitoring your auto trans temp. It's smart to know how hot your getting the trans so you know when it's time to give it a break to cool off. The reason for the 3.4 swap is it's more straightforward than other swaps. I don't know what's involved to drop a 1UZ engine in, but I'm guessing it's more work than the 5VZ.
