Thanks for this. Completely agree about the right hand thing. That’s what is actually producing the upright sound. Great to hear a decent player review an instrument instead of some amateur.

Also if you are going to change your strings, you will need to upgrade your tuners to hipshot, other wise the strings will break the tuners (at least in my experience)

PJ Studio is a great upright bass amp. I was also going to mention that the D’addario Zyex are my favorite Arco/Plucked strings. They have the sound of the Spirocores without the problems bowing them. I would love to hear a set on an NS bass. String Emporium has the best price on them
@danieluhuru65232 жыл бұрын
Dude the tone you're getting on this is phenomenal. At first I was thrown off by the tone of NS design (it sounds too much like an electric fretless bass guitar in most other videos). You're really making me reconsider.

It may not necessarily be the perfect substitute; but these tips should help. Also experiment with the EQ on your instrument too. Happy playing!

@@JonLaTonaBass Most definitely. It's still a strong consideration. Would you recommend starting with an EUB or a cheaper but quality laminate acoustic upright? I want to transition to that instrument, coming from an electric bass guitar.
@JonLaTonaBass2 жыл бұрын
@@danieluhuru6523 I think this instrument has come really close with some amazing developments. One thing That happens if you do change your strings is you will need to change the tuners if you get a WAV 4 bass by hipshot. You might have some frustrating moments transitioning from electric, but it can be done. It will prob be a little smoother too if you get this bass versus a laminate bass

So true that leaving it one positon gives a great acoustic sound, as well as arco capability. However, one of the great things about the Omni Bass, is its versatility - If you want, throw the switch and you have a whole new sound!
@JonLaTonaBass3 жыл бұрын
Sure, but when the switch is flicked, it doesn’t have a strong acoustic sound (almost has a Jaco vibe to it) it’s not bad sounding, but it doesn’t sound as acoustic as arco mode does.

@@JonLaTonaBass I'm an electric player, but have gone through my share of archtops and semi-hollow basses. And even on those angling the neck and playing with more of an upright pizz technique makes a difference. The Omni is what I'm leaning towards, but the videos I've seen just seem a bit too EUB sounding- lacking the "air" of a bass with a body. But keeping the arco setting on hooking the right hand toward the right and using the sides of the fingers to pluck seems to make a big BIG difference. I have a Genz Shuttle and an Epiphani cab- so I'm good on equipment. my question is how to do I find 34in scale upright strings? Labella tapewounds have always served me well...
@JonLaTonaBass3 жыл бұрын
So I would use any string, particularly flatwounds made for a standard electric. I know la Bella has a wide variety of nylon wound or other flats made for a standard electric bass. If you like this video I do have other videos, just search NS design Jon LaTona in your KZfaq search. It looks like you are well on your way of getting the most out of your bass!

If you change the strings, you might need to change your tuners. When I changed my strings, my e string tuning peg snapped off like a week later. Then I upgraded to the hipshot tuners.

@@JonLaTonaBass I'll search them out! That's definitely the the most upright tone I've heard from an NS!

John P and James Cammack both solo using the electric position. It does have a different sound but it's just a way to play faster for certain passages.
@robreck60822 ай бұрын
In my humble opinion, the electic position gives a near perfect fretless electric bass sound. Kind of nice if you are playing in an orchestra pit and need more than one bass. Godspell asks for at least three - Acoustic, Fretless, and fretted five string, as I recall. I got it done with two.

I’ve only had my WAV a couple of months, but I’ve been using the arco setting since day one, it just sounds better to me. I also use a PJ rig and find scooping the midrange on my Flightcase gives the best upright tone for me.

Many thanks!! Very helpful to be forewarned that the wraps on acoustic strings would extend beyond the bridge, and that it's not making so much difference in tone to scare one away from using acoustic strings. I wonder how long before the colored string wrapping starts to come apart at the bridge that way, though, and I guess you have to snip off some of the string length to get acoustic strings to wind up onto the pegs properly? Do you think 1/2 size acoustic bass strings would work better?

To avoid the wrap of the string going over the bridge extra string slots are provided in the back which will allow the strings to wrap around the bottom of the body and prevent the wrap going over the bridge which is undesirable.

kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h5qehc6bzpe4f3U.html I missed the extra slots, thanks to Steve Beskrone for pointing that out to me. This will one prevent the fabricated wrapping from passing the bridge, and two more than likely make the instrument sound even better.

I have a brand-new NS WAV and like the sound. I am also a huge La Bella strings fan (I use them on my bass guitars). I'm wondering if those RC610s will make enough difference to justify the price, since the current strings are brand new. I don't mind spending money; I just don't like to spend it needlessly. Thanks.

I totally understand where you are coming from. For me personally, I love the plucking tone of these LaBalla’s. Bowing not much of a difference, but plucking yes. Here are some things to keep in mind. 1) def adjust the tension of the neck with the Allen wrench 2) change the tuners. The stock tuners will break. Get the hipshot tuners for this bass. 3)make sure to place the end of the strings on the back of the bass. The cloth of the strings should not cross the bridge. 4) there might some enjoying buzzing to start. But the instrument will adjust. Hope this helps

Excellent question. I keep the nut around a little below my eyebrows. I do this because my shoulder is in slightly rough shape but it’s getting better: I didn’t change it he action of the bass by the bridge, but I tightened the trust rod which did increase the action. If this doesn’t answer your question, you can give me a more detailed question at jon.s.b.latona@gmail.com. Cheers and happy practicing!!

That doesn't work for me.. The Arco setting increases the bump noise from my finger touching the string and the note dies quickly - gets kind of sucked away as if it has too much compression. Have also had poor results with arco on this bass.. sounds like a pig being tortured.. Have to use radical EQ to sweeten the tone. I have had it for about 15 years - perhaps it's just old tech..?? Would love to have a bass that does both without switches and stompboxes.. Now looking at the CR5m.. I do like the fact that it's on a pedestal and you can not only have it in any position you like, but also step up to it with a bass guitar on, and play a short passage, or eg introduction..
