I finally pulled the trigger on a big purchase of AK 3rd Generation Paint! This is a first for me, purchasing almost the entire line of paint from this company. While there are still colors missing from their "basic" set, these three boxes represent the colors that I mostly use in my builds. The major deciding factor was AK has resolved the "dry needle" problem that you get with other brands of acrylic paint (except for Tamiya, but that paint is impossible to brush on). So I can brush or spray this paint. All I have to do is add thinner. That is as close to using the old Model Master or Testors paint that I'm able to get, these days.

Hobbylinc in Braselton, GA carries AK paints. They are a "warehouse" -- you can only do on-line orders. But at least they are in the U.S. I've used them and shipping rates and customer service have been very good.

Ben, good for you! I also have decided to go acrylic. In my case, I’m going with Ammo. I think their Atom paints may meet my needs. Good luck, we should compare notes in the future.

Mix to the consistence of No-Fat Milk. Paint should run down the mixing cup easily. Give it a try!

All my life my brother and I used Testors Model Master loved them just to hard to find these days, I've been using AK paints now I think they are the best paint out there these days.

That’s good to hear. I’m in the same boat. Testors and Model Masters have been discontinued by Rustoleum, who bought them out a few years ago.

Looked at these paints but haven't pulled the trigger yet. BTW - love the product placement - Canada Dry - hope you're getting some ad revenue from that, lol.

Great buy, those are great. Have you tested AK Real Colors? They are amazing, but they are lacquer acrylic paints. BTW the Oerlikons showed up on Friday - thanks 😊

Great!!! I haven’t tried their lacquer line yet, but I do have several bottles of their spray ready metal color paints. I won’t use anything else anymore. They don’t require a black base coat and look like… metal 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’ll still use lacquer and enamel here and there. I still have a big collection of both. It’s just time to switch the main paint collection to something else.

Never used retarder or leveling thinner

I started with a leveling thinner for something a while back and it made a big difference in the finish. But I don’t remember the particulars. I had to get the retarder for some other acrylics that have and… well I learned that a little goes a long way. But the line between enough and too much is very thin. Making it difficult to decide if I have the mixture right or not. Ultimately, it ends up being a lot of messing around. That being said, I think it’s a good idea to get a bottle. If your paint is drying a little fast, or you have a long paint session, putting a few drops in a cup with your paint will keep it wet longer than normal.
