3 MAJOR MISTAKES TO AVOID IN FOOD PLOTS THIS YEAR!

In this video I discuss 3 major mistakes that I see food plotters make that leads to a non desirable food plot. Not adding enough fertilizer, not having a herbicide program, and not taking care of the previous food plots from last year. A failed food plot is the worst, not only do you not have good nutritional food for the deer herd, but also you have no food to keep them there during the deer hunting season.

Thanks for letting me know to kill off the winter grains. I’m now certain not doing this starved/stunted the sunflowers last year when I only did sunflowers in strips but left the wheat to grow until the heat killed it. I’ll be spraying all the winter wheat and rye grains this weekend. Thanks man

Jay you’re welcome, I’m glad I could help! Yes it’s amazing how much nitrogen can get tied up in breaking down the cereal grain! Thanks for watching and good luck with the plots!

Talk about needing tons of fertilizer, try growing something on HEL (highly erodible land) that has little or no topsoil left. The current cost of fertilizer (and seed) to put on food plots has practically priced me out of the market. .

No doubt it’s a major expense anymore! Seed, chemicals, and fertilizer are all crazy expensive….but then again everything we need or want has skyrocketed the last 3-4 years. Thanks for watching

I put a bag of triple 19. On half of acre 😂. I’m sure it won’t hurt it if anything it will help through the season.

If soil fertility is low, it will definitely help, any you put out there is more for the plants to take up and then be consumed by the deer. Thanks for watching and good luck with the plots!

Hey Wes, great informative video as always man 👍🏽 I have some spring planting questions for you if ya don’t mind I’ll be planting Round up ready Eagle seed soybeans this spring here in Oklahoma (1 acre) (broadcasted) 1) when should I plant those soybeans, and how many lbs per acre? 2) which type of fertilizer would be best for the soybeans and when to broadcast it? And how many times? 3) Inoculant timing and how to mix in my broadcaster? I’m nervous about soybeans, I’ve never planted them in this area Thank you in advance man, I sure appreciate all your help and your food plot knowledge for us rookies 👍🏽

Tanner you need to get a soil test and fertilize for p and k off that recommendation. Add about 30 pounds of nitrogen per acre. I would plant them around May when the soil temperature is warm , make sure you keep the deer off of them for the first 7-10 days. Put some gloves on, dump a bag of soybeans into the spreader, put inoculant on it and stir it. You will see the beans have a grey tint to them. Good to go at that point.

@@DIYfoodplotpro okay thank you sir, I got a soil test done but the seed I was going to plant back then wasn’t soybeans, so my test is for two other plant species I didn’t know if that made a difference

I’d stick with recommendations, except for the nitrogen. Add 30 LBS per acre and follow the recs for p and k.

So many of us are unable to justify or afford the cost of lime and fertilizer these days, I know we need them But?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 2 ай бұрын
Carlton I totally get it, fertilizer and lime are expensive, especially in large quantities. Where budgeting is a big issue I’d recommend only doing small plots, and focusing more on TSI, as when the sunlight hits the ground you will get a ton of food for free. Small plots of less than 1/2 acre are more budget friendly. There are several plots you can plant with limited fertilizer/lime and minimal seed cost that work well like cereal rye or winter wheat, or annual clovers. Thanks for watching and good luck with the plots!

Is there a pre emerge i can use with brassica?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 2 ай бұрын
I typically don’t have trouble with brassicas so long as I’ve sprayed the ground 2-3 times and kept the big crop of weeds and grass killed b4 planting. I would be hesitant to use a pre emergent with brassicas because I typically like to come back several weeks later and plant my cereal grains in there as well to help Fill in spots that are thin. Thanks for watching

I am planting a corn in a place I have wheat and clover mixture but I am wanting to leave it for turkey if I mow it to keep it all low will the corn still do well
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 2 ай бұрын
I’ve had this exact question come up several times the last few days. Well the good news is the clover you have will add a good bunch of nitrogen in the soil for the corn to use. It’s still going to get tied up when breaking the wheat down, but should be okay with the extra nitrogen from the clover and a full rate of nitrogen for the corn. It’s not ideal, but I think you will be okay. Good luck with the plots!

Yes you’re 100% correct it’s amazing fawning cover. Yes typically the rye will have deteriorated by the time you plant the fall plots it’s not as big of a deal. Yes sir I did unfortunately have to cancel the monthly subscription.

Wes, can you disc the grain and accomplish the same as with chemicals? I planted tye and wheat last fall, and it's just now starting to really grow.

Yes disking it will help speed the process up, but it most cases wont eliminate it completely. But it will definitely help! Thanks for watching and good luck with the plots!

Hi Wes , can I plant clover into last year's corn stubble without tilling for a summer cover crop?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 2 ай бұрын
Dave if you have seed to soil contact, then yes you can. I’d do it right b4 a rain and Ideally you don’t have any weeds or grass right now in the plot. Just be aware, if we get into a drought spell the clover may very well die off, as the root system isn’t established. I would try my best not to stress it by mowing it this summer, just spray to keep the grass/weeds killed. Thanks for watching.

Nathan no set time….the longer the better. Until the wheat or rye residue has broken down it will have the nitrogen tied up. Thanks for watching
