I remember helping Kerry at the sportsman's show when you came through Lisa and really loved his boxes. Sadly Kerrys dreams of making those boxes as a career after pationing them never came to fruition. I he had a couple different sizes to fit nearly every old town canoe and a few others. He even made a few into a cooler model. I inherited the last of the inventory from his widow Dianne and have been tasked with finding good homes for them. Rest in pease buddy the legacy of your boxes are giving other sportsman and women great joy

I was just doing research to try and find the Kerry Parker after hearing his name on this video. I bought a tandem old town canoe for my wife, daughter and I and when I saw this box I was just like “wow I wonder where I can find one”. I’m so sorry to hear that your friend and such an ingenious man has passed before he could put one of these in every canoe. What a coincidence to see this comment 23 hours after you posted it. Again, my sincerest condolences for your loss.

These videos are great. I truly enjoy them. The fact that I learn useful information makes it even better. Since you asked; I do have a question. I own a Wenonah MN 2 and live on the coast of Downeast Maine. I normally use it solo in the salt water bays accessible from our front yard. Less river use so far. Could you give some recommendations on which paddles you would recommend for open water? I currently use a kayak paddle 1/2 the time when I need to move in a straight line faster and a recreational single bladed canoe paddle when maneuvering is needed. I will be carving my own paddles this spring. What shape would you go with? I’m thinking 1 beaver tail and 1 otter tail. What is your opinion of the bent shaft paddles? Some parts of the world swear by them and others stay away. Thanks again for the great content.

Just found your channel and I absolutely love the no nonsense style. I'm looking to buy a tandem canoe, mainly plan to paddle with my 80lb dog (and rarely one extra person). I weigh about 150 lbs and am reading a lot of advice that seems to say a 16-17ft tandem is hard to paddle solo and direct me to buy a smaller solo canoe. I notice you paddle from the stern and seem to be in a 16ft canoe, what are your thoughts on this ?

That’s an excellent design, the way it fits in the bow/ stern of the canoe. The box looked to be varnish or perhaps fibreglass resin. What is used to waterproof the seems ?
@Mainepolingguide

I don’t know what was used to put the cedar planks together, but at the time 1990’s the resin used to seal it was 75 $ a can..vast fortune. Every year I take a clear 2 part epoxy and fill any serious dings, then I use a high quality outdoor poly and give it 3 coats. Lately Helmsman.

That's pretty sweet, Lisa. Looks like a good project for the other half of the winter. Looks like wood planks not a plywood as well. Will it fit as snuggly in other boats or just the Camper?
@Mainepolingguide
@Mainepolingguide Жыл бұрын
It’s made of cedar planks, it was made to fit in an Old town Tripper but will also fit a Tripper and a Disco 169. When it first came out it was called a Bow & Stern Canoe box. They had a film of a Tripper you could not sink because of the air trapped in the boxes.

I have a hunter as well. Hey let me know if you ever want to sell that Btw the box fits in the bow of that. The box is cedar planks and in the 1990’s the poly to seal it was 75$ a can..a vast fortune. I poly it every season with a quality helmsman brand for outdoors.

@@Mainepolingguide Ohh sorry no sale,I just got it last spring put wood rails on it and took the seats out with a kneeling thwart. I am on the look out for a 15 foot camper. I like my Hunter, still stable enough to stand an pole. I tried the newer old town Next and there is no standing with a pole at any comfort level worth it, the disco 119 was a little better. I expect the boards on the box were tongue and grove. I have some wide cedar I might try some single pieces with just the corners to seal up.

how did your canoe repair with steel wire and epoxy work out?
@Mainepolingguide
@Mainepolingguide Жыл бұрын
Richard, I found a product that I’m probably gonna try in the Spring, first really warm day, and detail amd update on 3 Minutes. As for the demo patch at MCS. I left that on for the Winter but will probably remove to do the Spring repair at home. In the event of having to repair on a river I stand by the stainless steel wire and the 2 part epoxy. The night we had to repair, it was cold, rainy, conditions not ideal for relying on the epoxy. You have to have something physical like the wire, stitching the break and keeping it from spreading or breaching. Especially on the river we were on with multiple sets of rapids coming up, and a fully loaded boat.

Depending on how you care about your canoe, or what type of canoe you have, make sure to have some rubber or any other kind of padding under that box.

This is a very cool box. However, each canoe can be different and it's important to have a proper fit. And I'd add some padding to protect the hull since this could make a difference in case of an impact. ****The best would be to use some cardboard to make a template.**** Also, here, people with us would be allowed to use that on calm or mid-calm waters. Not allowed on white waters or stormy days, because if you crash/sink, you'd lose everything. And our philosophy is that NO ONE is above the law of physics, anyone can flip/crash/sink/wobble/tango one day. Even the most experienced ones ;)

It’s probably hard to see in the video but the bottom of the box kind of floats above the floor, it doesn’t rub.
