I've found out that looking up the meaning of Japanese words in a Japanese language dictionary is a great way to learn new words, especially words about how to explain what something is. You may also learn definitions that aren't regularly used by translating apps. Here's an example. In a song I was listening to, the singer said 外野 (gaiya), which a lot of websites simply translate as "outfield," but that didn't seem to match the context. Low and behold, when I look it up in a Japanese language dictionary, the third definition is "a third wheel," and I'm like, "oh, that makes _perfect_ sense in context.
@DoctorLazertron
@DoctorLazertron Жыл бұрын
In context (俺は外野の気分) DeepL translator puts it as outsider while ofc Google still says outfield, so if the dictionary can’t help in certain situations then DeepL is pretty good. For “third wheel” it put 三枚目 so it’s not direct but I’m not sure how accurate. But the danger of that is, if I say “I feel like a third wheel” it might think I’m saying that I’m in the mood for another serving of wheel.

What kind of dictionary do you use? A physical one?
@DoctorLazertron
@DoctorLazertron Жыл бұрын
So I searched 三枚目 and it looks like it refers to a comedic actor, or a funny person generally outside of film. So I’m guessing it took “third wheel” to refer to the “comic relief” which makes sense in a kind of cosmic sense but .. not what I was looking for. The literal meaning is “a third sheet (of whatever flat object you’re counting) so I wonder if there is a third-wheel aspect to a comic relief character between either 2 main actors or between the boke and tsukkomi (This comment is an addendum to my previous one not a reply to the OP. Sorry for spam.)

Did Matt ever publicly address the uproot scam? With all the controversy that he was the center of a year ago and the toxic comments he made on video, I have reservations about anyone giving him a platform. Did he show any accountability? From what I have seen, he scammed his followers, took their money, evaded the public uproar and tried to silence public dialogue about it.

Loved that. And when Dogen said he couldn’t just use Japanese all the time since he’s trying to create a bilingual environment at home for his kid I was like, “dude, that’s the excuse I always use!” (Of course in my case, my Japanese is actually bad enough to warrant the excuse. At least according to my kids.😅)

that can often be an excuse as to why people don't learn the language, like my friend's mum still doesn't speak that much English as insisted only on using Punjabi at home, then you meet other people that speak English perfectly but their children speak very little Punjabi

But don't throw away the raw one (as in something that was with you from a raw, early stage -> mother tongue) for a ripe one (something you just picked up that hasn't been with you since the beginning -> languages that we immigrant children often start learning properly from school age).

I have an interesting story… My wife was looking for a bed for my oldest son on Craigslist and she showed one to me to see if I liked it. “Looks good. Nice and minimalist”, I told her. She scheduled a time for us to pick it up. We approach the house and I park by backing up to the front to make it easier to load the new bed. I get out of the van and head back toward the house where the owner is waiting outside. I see him and I freeze…my mind was racing *he looks familiar…where do I know him from…stop staring…this is getting awkward*. My wife chimes in to break the silence, “Do…you know each other?”. “I know him” I replied, implying that he may not know who I am. It was Matt (Matt vs Japan). It was so out of context and unexpected that I couldn’t place where I recognized him from even though I was regularly watching his videos. He was moving to Japan the following week I believe. The odds of that happening are interesting to think about.

@pahoopahoo
@pahoopahoo Жыл бұрын

That's one of the reason why my Japanese teacher said it's worth my time more to increase the amount of vocabulary rather than to learn pitch accent cause there's so many regional differences and you can say so much more with 'imperfect' pitch (which might even be correct depending on the region), but large vocabulary, but no use having a perfect pitch, but knowing only 20 words 🤔
@kaltaron1284

A cheap trick to increase vocabulary is to learn Katakanago. If you know how Japanese translate foreign words then there's a far higher chance they will understand you.
@Colopty
@Colopty Жыл бұрын
@@kaltaron1284 It's a wonderful hack that must be used carefully, because at some point if you just keep using katakanago every time you don't know a word you will use it for words that aren't actual loan words in Japanese, at which point you're no longer the hip guy using modern Japanese, you're just some ass speaking English in a bad Japanese accent.
