In this video we look at the relationships between phase voltage and line voltage and also phase current and line current in a delta connected three phase load. We carry out a practical experiment to identify these values and then explain the maths behind the numbers. Stay tuned to the end for the critical formulae you'll need and some helpful exam tips as well.

Just one question, to be clear: if you had used the voltmeter to measure the voltage between any one of those three live wires and a neutral or earth wire, you would have got a reading of 430/sqrt(3) ≈ 248VAC, right? And if the voltage between any two live wires had been 400VAC, you would have got roughly 230VAC between any one live wire and neutral or earth?

One restricts the start up current on a motor so over current does not affect other equipment, tripping etc and once it is spinning normally after overcoming the initial start up it is then switched to the other which allows the full power to keep the motor turning at full efficiency. Star then Delta...( or is it the other way round...?) or something like this at least..
@LocoSajoca
@LocoSajoca 3 жыл бұрын
Joe, would I somewhat be right in thinking that star connected loads behave similarly to resistors connected in series? - as in the current is the same throughout the circuit. Also then, delta connected loads would behave similarly to resistors in parallel with regards to the voltage?
@JoeRobinsonTraining

Kind of, star and delta are sort of additional ways of connecting loads. You can also have series and parallel circuits connected to three phase systems.

Just a question Joe but what would happen if you had a 3 phase installation but there was no 3 phase equipment but single phase loads spread out over the phases. So only 1 neutral for the return current from those 3 phases. Is that where you would have to run a bigger sized neutral to cope with all the returning current?
