Modern schools have been described as "broken." Today, students have little autonomy, and are rewarded for doing exactly as they're told. Here, we consider a model of learning meant to awaken your unique genius.
Unfortunately, most of us never reach our full potential, because our educational system doesn't take into account the things that make us unique. And yet, you are a one of a kind combination of strengths, gifts, and talents. Things that no one else has.
In 2012, Robert Greene released a book called “Mastery.” Where he looked at the lives of some of the greatest masters in history: Leonardo Da Vinci, Mozart, and Einstein. And also contemporary masters like the robotics engineer Yoky Matsuoka, and the artist Teresita Fernandez. He found fascinating patterns and lessons from each of their journey that you can apply to your own.
In this video we consider 3 stages you can take on your journey to awaken your own unique genius, and realize your full potential.
CHAPTERS
00:00 - The problem of the modern school system
01:12 - A new model of learning: 3 steps to your unique genius
02:22 - Part One: your primal curiosity
06:33 - Part Two: the apprenticeship phase
15:15 - Part Three: the creative active stage & awakening your intuition

There was a time years ago, when I suddenly realized that I have a lot of potential that simply wasn't developed at home, school, etc. Armed with that knowledge, I set about fulfilling my potential and not thinking about "lost time". We have long lives and plenty of time to learn and do what we want to do now that we are adults and in control of our destinies. (chess piece)

Beautifully said, Lisa. Thanks as always for taking the time to share your valuable perspective and insights. I completely agree that our society is obsessed with early achievement, and yet, huge contributions have been made by "late bloomers" who came into their gifts at later times in their lives. I appreciate you, and I hope you're well! I look forward to your next video as well.

Thanks for this my friend. I spent the last ten plus years working on myself, following my interests and intuition and I know that flow state. But I've struggled to put it to use, and I've even lost that connection to myself over time bc of living a rat race existence. I needed to hear this. 🙏

This is comparable to meditation, the 'flow state' is achieved when our thoughts and actions are fully focused on just one thing over a long period of time. 💯

Great video... My dad was literally a master in his craft. He was a master jeweler, lapidarian and gold and silversmith. He was one of the only people in the field that could cut and finish gemstones... Specifically opal, which is very difficult to cut. My dad passed 7 years ago after battling cancer... But I try to live by the principles he taught me and I can only hope to one day be a master in my own craft☺️❤️🌻♟️

What an awesome video. This is so true. I graduated from high school and only because I felt I had to. What really resonated with me at the beginning of the video was that we are taught so much information that 1) we don't really care about; 2) stuff we will probably never use again; and 3) outdated information. I pretty much only enjoyed art class, though I did not have the encouragement and was not responsible and mature enough to remain focused on my passions and talents. That is on me. I wish school systems (and maybe there are some now) would have real life coaches and counsellors that cared about each student's personal strengths and help them assess those and help them plan and choose career goals. I think we are simply thrown a bunch of material, and it is left up to us (young, inexperienced people) to figure it all out ourselves. Clearly, with so many of us changing jobs and such, the system as a whole isn't working. Plus, it's not like putting yourself through school isn't challenging enough financially, and it uses up so much effort and can leave us feeling helpless and lost when we later find out that we dislike the work we're doing. Sadly, I would guess that many people simply give up and work to pay the bills . . . such a waste of people's talents and lives. And it all could have been avoided with the proper guidance. Having said all this, I hope your video reaches many, many younger people who can benefit from your video. Cheers! ♟

Beautifully said, Silver Tongue! Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences and valuable insights. I completely agree with you that as a society, we are not fully developing and nurturing our gifts. That's one of the great tragedies of modern times. In an ideal world we would have caring counsellors, as you've pointed out, to help guide our development. The good news is we do have access to many resources that masters of the past could only dream of. It does mean it's up to us to cultivate these things on our own, and seek out our own mentors. I'm so grateful for your support, Silver Tongue! Take good care and be well

Chess emoji... I have gone through all three phases of an apprentice and I am currently working on becoming a master metal fabricator. I have gone through this process before with art, and it took me around 15 years to master that craft. That early introduction on becoming a master of my craft has sped the process up on becoming a master fabricator. These are some things that I have learned on my way to becoming a master and hope they can help someone out. 1) School; Do not think that graduating from school/college is going to make you a lot of money when you're done, or have you ready to jump in the deep end of your new found career. School is just a tutorial on what you can expect heading into your new career, at an entry level. 2) Pride; Take pride in what ever you are doing. Wether your washing dishes trying to become a chef, or digging holes for plumbing. Do it to the best of your abilities every time. Eventually the people you're trying to impress will notice and he/she will start to show you more, knowing that you have taken pride in the little things. 3) Purpose; Do not do things for the sake of doing it or finishing it. Do things with the purpose of getting better everyday and you will get better. 4) I KNOW; Do not ever tell the person teaching you/master "I KNOW"... If you knew they wouldn't be explaining it to you. Instead say "considerate done", or "I'll do it to my best abilities". 5) Engulf Yourself; Books, videos, and like minded individuals will help teach you what to do and what not to do. Surround yourself with those who have gone down your path or are headed down your path. It's reassuring to know that people have accomplished the same goals you seek. 6) MONEY; This one is huge, because most people want to make a lot of money fast. Thats not the way the world works though, people get paid there worth. Do the things you need to do everyday, to the best of your abilities and head in the direction you want to go, and the money will come. Nothing happens over night, but through hard work and dedication anyone can master their craft. As usual great video and i'm looking forward to the next one, Thank You.

Thank you for making some of the best, deeply thought provoking content on this platform. The wisdom and stories you share are incredibly intuitive. As I listened and watched, I could relate to my own journey from an apprentice plumber to a licensed master plumber. I could relate to the intense observation and remember watching and imitating the master who taught me. Then when the time came, I started my own business. Through years of cultivating my love for the trade, and pushing the limits of perfection, every job was more thought out and better executed than the last. I relate so strongly to that deep desire to be the best, to learn as much as I can, and to apply experience to everything I do. Thank you for this. 🐴(knight)

Solid video! Coming back to this video I realized the comment I made wasn’t saved. Nearly every domain has evolved so much over the decades except the education systems that nearly everyone is required to go through growing up. KZfaq is one of the biggest advancement in education around the globe then the changes happening in schools these days. Many valuable mentors can be found here while it’s a really rare thing to find them in educational systems today.

Thanks so much, my friend! I completely agree. The free distribution of information on the internet has made learning much easier than ever before. I do believe formal education still has its place for certain things, but for huge areas of learning it is lagging behind, and not helping people develop their gifts to their fullest potential (and in many cases actively hindering it). I hope you're well, take good care!

Even now as I am older I work out daily to improve myself physically to be a better musician and a better martial artist and to be in Peak physical health! I'm sure there are people out there who say I am still a little obsessed and I'm okay with that! Hi Elson, I think this is one of your best videos! I have been contemplating this a great deal myself - learning is soo inherently fun, how was it possible that formal education made it so boring? I often fell asleep in classes in high school before I learned to force myself to power through it, and I'm still not sure how I managed to stay in academia until age 30 haha. Yet, I can so easily spend hours on YT watching documentaries, and I'm sure many others can relate to this. I think that Elon Musk also very much agrees with your philosophy of the important of engaging and experiential learning and is teaching his kids this way now. Also, it's awesome you mentioned Robert Greene's Mastery - I think that this book and 33 Strategies of War are his best books, even though 48 Laws is the most popular. It's a great reminder of the importance of a robust apprenticeship in any endeavor. It's sometimes easy for me to get a little impatient, as I already spent so many years completing an apprenticeship in the medical field, and it's daunting to start a new apprenticeship in another field now - but this video is a great reminder to appreciate the fun of the journey. Keep up the awesome work bro!

Thanks so much, Jonathan! As always I'm blown away by your kind words and overall support. I totally agree with you. In a world where information is always evolving, it makes little sense to teach memorized facts and figures. It's more important to cultivate a love and enthusiasm for learning, as you've pointed out. May you continue to follow your bliss.

I really appreciate this video, as well as as so many of your other inspiring videos. Your calm and curious style of speaking and interpreting the message you are presenting is very refreshing in this fast paced world of Intensity. This is a new presentation, very well done by the way, of a message that has changed my life. When I learned the message from John Taylor Gatto, 3 years ago, about how our schools and systems are set up on a Prussian oppression style of factory like education, it was like keys of understanding unlocking doors in my mind... I started sharing what I had learned from him and got great feedback from people in the community that helped me to understand that what I was learning was very relevant to so many people... I started a club and now have gained so much knowledge that I hope is helping others... By the way your great video here also is so meaningful about people searching for their calling in life, what REALLY INTERESTS them, then finding the flow zone of deep learning and application between ease and challenge... Thank you for your great videos here, keep up the inspirational work 🌍🙌🎶 🌌

Love is what allows you to move millions of people, to rally them, to inspire them, to give them a vision to do something, love is what allows you to land someone on the moon, love is what allows you to tackle slavery or oppression of other sorts, love is what allows you to care about the environment, clean up the environment, to create better schools and that's ultimately all that people want. What do people want in the world? They want to be able to love. To love their family, to love their children, to love their nation and then to go beyond that and smoke DMT.

I loved foraging and hunting spiders in the woods at age 5. These days I would stop in the middle of a clearing in the forest to play Mozart or Brahms in my mobile phone and pretend to conduct an orchestra. It doesn't matter anymore if I'd wasted decades of my life learning the wrong things. As long as I am capable of being happy even for a moment, that's good enough for me.

Thanks so much, Vladimir! From a fellow content creator, I appreciate you. I think it depends very much on what software you're using. I happen to use FCPX, and started out with Ali Abdaal's FCPX editing course on skillshare (which is free with a free trial of skillshare). I picked up other skills along the way from sources I could find online and on KZfaq. I don't understand Slovak, but I think your editing and content looks wonderful. Take good care and be well!

♟ I am a teacher and at first I was horrified with the introduction of this video. But I am happy to say, that teaching has evolved immensely and is actually much more aligned with your vision of how school should be. At least, that is the case here, in Australia, based on the ongoing professional development we undergo and the programs being implemented in schools across Victoria. Personally, student voice and agency is a high priority in my classroom as I choose to leverage their personal interests to develop curiosity, increase focus and they then choose to put in more effort because they want to. I do this pretty consistently as it makes everything easier and more enjoyable. Why force a topic when you can leverage interests instead? My kids all have awesome personalities and we love having a good chat! So I'd much rather change the lesson to suit their individual preferences which supports that flow state. Then we get to learn even more from sharing stories with eachother! ❤

I had to leave another comment🤣. I was out mowing my lawn and I couldn't stop thinking about everything you brought up in this video. I have thought of and worked on every idea you brought up in this video and in all of your others. I feel like we are Kindred Spirits🎈. I hope you have read the Dolores Cannon book or watch the videos on KZfaq "The Three Waves of Volunteers" I really think you're one of them(us) it may help. Sending light⚡ and love❤. Again thanks for the great videos 😇 Sorry about sending you homework it's the 33 in me, always a teacher🤣 you just feel like one of the waves 😘. Intuition like this doesn't just happen🤣🖖✌🤙

One of my hopes in creating this channel was to create a space for kindred spirits to connect and share their experiences and perspectives with one another. So your comment really warmed my heart to read. When time permits I will definitely look more into Dolores Cannon, thank you once again for the recommendation. 🎈 Take good care!

. 13 Then a voice told him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.” 14 “Surely not, Lord!” Peter replied. “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean.” 15 The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” 16 This happened three times, and immediately the sheet was taken back to heaven. 17 While Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision, the men sent by Cornelius found out where Simon’s house was and stopped at the gate. 18 They called out, asking if Simon who was known as Peter was staying there. 19 While Peter was still thinking about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Simon, three[a] men are looking for you. 20 So get up and go downstairs. Do not hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them.” 21 Peter went down and said to the men, “I’m the one you’re looking for. Why have you come?” 22 The men replied, “We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God-fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.” 23 Then Peter invited the men into the house to be his guests
