Today I dance 3 different versions of the Sugarplum Fairy Variation from Nutcracker. First is the classical version by Ivanov (done by many companies), the Grigorovich version (danced by the Bolshoi), and finally the Balanchine version (danced by many companies including New York City Ballet). I have only ever been coached in the Balanchine, so it was fun to try the other 2! They are so difficult! Which is your favorite?

Which is your favorite? The Balanchine is the most natural to me because that's the one I have been coached in and performed! The first 2 are gorgeous but SO hard. This really gave me an appreciation for all of the styles!

The first time I ever saw the Grigorovich choreography it was several decades ago and I just happened to catch the Bolshoi's Nutcracker on TV. It was danced by Natalya Arkhipova and I never realized until I was much older and dancing myself how incredibly difficult that variation is. Arkhipova made it look like a walk in the park.

As a musician, I've always preferred the Grigorovich because it's the one that musically makes the most sense. It aligns with the rhythm the best, and has always been what shows in my head when playing the piece.

The Ivanov version is the one I'm most familiar with and it just feels like Christmas to me. I love seeing variations in rehearsal clothing more than polished costumed performances because I feel like I can better appreciate the hard work required to make such a difficult variation look so effortless. The Gregorovich version is new to me. I liked the musicality but immediately thought that the pirouettes en dehors after the Italian fouettes completely changing the direction of momentum was just cruel choreography (although pretty)! My favourite part of the Balanchine version is the turning sequence on the diagonal towards upstage left - the arms and head are so beautiful and reminiscent of a snowflake; a calmer snowflake than Balanchine's snow. All 3 versions would be fun to learn, and I would probably enjoy different aspects of the choreography from the perspective of the dancer as opposed to the perspective of the audience.

Grigorovich all the way 😍 I'm a total hack as a dancer but, as a classically trained musician, I feel like Grigorovich's choreography speaks so naturally with the music. It becomes one voice. Not sure musicians are particularly qualified to comment on choreography but that's my personal reaction. Thank you for giving us such beautiful examples side-by-side

I think Grigorovich was inspired by a ballerina box toy because the lot turns and fuettes in the same spot. Katie, they were all beautiful! The last time I danced the Nutcracker, I was Clara, which was a lifetime ago for me, around 1978. I danced it every year, in a variety of roles, since I was around 7 years old or so. I grew up dancing with the Brunswick Arts company, and they always did the classical version, so that is the version I was used to. Although, all three that you danced were stunning, I really love the Bolshoi on you!! There is just something about the steps, the flow of steps, and I guess the whole choreography, that just makes you sparkle! You are a beautiful dancer, and the Bolshoi calls your name! ✨🩰

I think the Grigorovich has more visual interest compared to the Ivanov because of the extra movements, but the Balanchine is much more fluid and graceful and expressive. It’s very interesting for me to see all 3 versions like this back to back. Made me realize that my home town studio version was a combination of all 3 that had distinct sections from each style. Thank you for this! Beautiful!

Wow all so wonderful! Not better or worse just different artistic interpretations of the music! If I had to pick one I'd go with the Grigorovich! Just thought it fits the music the best
