I stop airation because that will reduce the temperature, but keep the heaters on from my backup battery, and lower the heaters way way down to like 70/75 and cover it. If I feel like the power will be on soon I don't lower the temp, but you never know how long it will be out.

I have a very large power bank that's meant for camping with USB, DC, and three-prong outlets. Forget the mAh but it's in with my fish supplies and ready to be plugged in if the power goes out. Obviously this requires me to be home or get there relatively quickly. Around here the power outages are usually caused by heat, not cold or storms, so I don't feel comfortable waiting very long before getting the air flowing again. Tbh in the past I've sometimes had to let what happens happen. In the 750gal pond outside, I've only rarely lost fish -- summer 2020, I lost exactly 1 koi with the power out for like 3 days and the water at a steady 95 degrees Fahrenheit. It was horrible, but it could've been so much worse.

a) the best solution, NG based since it is widely available here B) I wound say 90% of homes do not get enough light, mine is an exception C) Wind does not work in Edmonds, you would on SE WA but not Edmonds D) see B and C Finally, you miss a better solution, a Trifuel or propane generator. It is easy to get a virtually endless supply of propane with just 2 tanks. Just go to any uHaul and refill one while using the other. You do not have the maintenance issues of gas generators even with using gas additives.

Yeah I don’t agree with his theories here, I lost pretty much a whole saltwater predator tank during a a short on that outlet, it happened in the span of 5 and a half to 6 hours. I came to the tank and all but 4 fish were dead and I had a lot of big nice saltwater fish, so they can die a lot faster if it’s stocked with alot of fish or they are bigger fish, when they are small guppy type fish they aren’t using as much oxygen, that should be specified. Salt water all hell will break loose with no flow

We lost power in a snowstorm, for about 24 hours. The USB nano air pump for my 10 gallon ran like a champ on a USB battery pack for about three days. I kept it on the battery pack just to see how long it would go. I wrapped the tank in old blankets to keep it insulated, then floated a 32 ounce water bottle full of hot water to keep it warm. It stayed in the 60s, even though our house got down into the 40s.

My last go round with fish had intentionally overstocked mbunas when a blizzard hit and we were without power for about 36 hours. The house was already only 63 or so before and it got much colder before power was restored. No battery operated fish equipment back then and it was nervewracking- had quilts around the tanks, manual agitation with spatulas, etc. In the end only lost 1 fish in 2 55 tanks. I think about this more with nano tanks as they won't hold heat long at all, look forward to that new product when it's available. Spring in the deep south means storms and outages, want to be better prepared.

I had two last year, one 3 hour one this year. One was a tree that fell by the school so it was a rush job, schools get top priority to get back online even before the pandemic, the other was a car slipped on the ice and ran into a power pole and caught on fire and lit the pole up and was burning it down. It took did not take long to control the fire but replacing the pole, etc. took a couple days. The most amazing part was the driver got out in time and did not die. When I saw the pole on fire with a car there I figured the driver was dead. I could not get close enough to tell since the police had restricted the area by the time I saw it but found out afterwards.

Here in South Africa we currently have stage six load shedding, meaning our power is off for up to and even over 8 hours a day. This is fine in the summer months but in winter it becomes a real struggle with me setting alarms at 2am to get up and cover the tanks with blankets or add water I’ve heated on the gas stove. The 500l maintains its temperature well but my 50l cools rapidly.

My wife, Cathy, (who sometimes post here) has 10 tanks ranging from 20 to 120 gallons. Her largest tanks have various varieties of discus. I'm ignorant (for the most part) of tropical fish and their needs. But as a husband, I'm tasked to make sure all my wife's tanks have back up power in the even of a power outage. Living in south central Florida, our power is occasionally knocked out during an electrical storm, but generally the power isn't off long enough to become a concern. Hurricanes are another matter. In past years (the last being in 2017 during Hurricane Irma) we had our power knocked out for several days. In 2004 I bought a 10 H.P. back up generator and had a local electric company install a sub panel comprising 10 circuits and fed by my generator. Two of the circuits are dedicated to (two different rooms) my wife's fish tanks, so as to keep the filters, heaters, aerators, lights, etc., running. However, when our power is knocked out for a protracted amount of time, I don't run the back up generator 24/7, but rather run it for about 2 hours on and 2 hours off. This cycling of run time keeps our two refrigerators (that have frozen brine shrimp and blood worms) and freezer temperature satisfied. The upshot to all of the above is, my wife has peace of mind, that in the event of a long-term power outage, her fish will be fine.

An automatic transfer switch would have been easier and cheaper.
@1royalpalm
@1royalpalm 2 жыл бұрын
@@toriless An automatic transfer switch isn't applicable in my case, as my small generator is manual start; plus, to prevent too much start-up amp draw I must turn on each circuit one at a time. When a pond gets that high of a water level the dam can fail even without an overtopping just from the weight of the water behind the dam and saturated material within the dam itself. It might be good to have an overflow set for a lower water level, or have the ditch bypass the pond when the ditch gets lots of flow like you have there. It's a small pond but a failure can result in a channeled flow that can be quite destructive.

My lfs manager has a natural gas generator. It turns on automatically when power goes out. He has 38 tanks. I use a generator that connects directly to my circuit box. Quick setup. My tanks went 18 hours with nothing running once and all fish survived. Plants help alot.

I have a Tesla Powerwall battery storage. Some people have battery storage with or without solar panels or residential wind turbine. You can store non peak power to be used at peak power times. The powerwall powers your whole house even charging my EV’s. Remember when city wide outages gas stations are closed as gas pumps need electricity to pump gas. 26% tax credit.

Washington power PSE charges a flat rate for electricity, there's no peak or off peak rates or option for one. Your first 600kwh is $0.09 per kWh, 600kwh and above in the billing cycle is $0.11 per kWh. You can save money with solar though, and a battery backup can be nice for power outages or if you want to be nice to the grid. Maybe there's credits that puget sound energy gives for having a battery system.

In our area we went through a spell of loosing power every month sometimes twice a month. I ended up investing in a generac whole house generator. I think we've lost power twice in the last three years after the purchase. 😆

That is why you should always have an umbrella, so it does not rain. I always have a cell phone with me in the car for the same reason, so I never need one.

Had the power go out today. Just used a batteri operated airpump. Luckily it was just 2,5 hours. And it wasn't that cold today.

For anyone who can run a generator, that should be first option for the house. Keep the house warm keep the fish warm. After that it's batteries and candles. Batteries have to be looked after, they do go bad even if you are showing "5 bars" it doesn't mean it's going to last as long as when we first buy them, they lose capacity. Like most things the weakest point is the human, at least this human (me) hahaha

after having a large earthquake no power I just did not do a thing to my fish tanks. Most of the CBD was Damage the next morning I saw that the large fish tank had a big crack in a corner so at that point I took all the fish and plants out and place them in a chilly bin. the tank was half fill. the fish were all ok

There are different types of generators.The type I think I would like to have are hooked up to the building and they automatically come on when power goes out. They are great because you don't even go 60 seconds without power. The other type are portable and you have to plug everything in and then you have to worry about the exhaust and noise and starting by pulling, they suck

The problem is the power crews can't go up in the cherry pickers until the winds are below 35 MPH. That's a problem! I did have guppies survive a 36 hour power outage.

For all the stuff you have to run in the shop you should just get a whole house generator. It will run everything. I know it costs like 10K but if you can afford it, it is a life saver and makes life easier. I know you have a ton of stuff you may be putting money into as well like developing your awesome air pump but if yuh ever get a chance, look into it. I can’t wait until your air pumps come out. I will def. be buying some as well as your new nets made with carbon fiber. 👍🏼

I have a dedicated UPS for my tank. IT should last for approximately 6 hours. It gives me an alert on my phone when I am traveling so that I know the event happen. Additionally; I can disable individual ports on the UPS incase I notice something going ballistic while I am out.

It’s been my experience, especially with the larger fish, that a lack of oxygen is the first thing that will kill fish. Waiting a few hours isn’t a bad idea since the power will usually come back on. If not, then the lithium battery air pumps come out. I’ve gone 8 hours during a black out in L.A. with me miles away. No issues after the power finally came on.

One thing that I didn't explain during it, cause I was in the middle of a power outage is. It is also really important on how much oxygen was in the aquarium water to begin with. If your aquarium starts low, you have much less time than a tank running air stones before it goes out.
