Transcript:
So your doctor has told you that you
Should take a bone drug
Well here’s the first three things you
Should do when you hear those words
Number one you yourself should assess
Your real risk of fracture
You can do this most simply by using the
Fracture risk assessment that i
Developed on betterbones.com
Of course one important factor is if
You’ve already fractured then we know
There’s something going on you should
Take this seriously
If you have a family history if you’re
Using medications
That increase the risk of fracture like
steroids and antidepressants and
Anti-acids and many other medications
First assess your real risk of fracture
And we’ve written a lot about this
You’ll find the fracture risk assessment
On betterbones.com
Second ask your doctor to do a medical
Workup looking for the causes of bone
Loss
Looking at things like vitamin d loss of
Calcium in the urine
Parathyroid hormone cortisol level dhea
And most importantly bone breakdown
Level
You see there are many tests that the
Doctors do if they think a person is
Having excessive bone loss
So i always say tell your doctor gee doc
If you think it’s that important that i
Should take bone drugs then it’s
Certainly important enough to find out
If there’s any hidden causes of the bone
Loss
So get my medical osteoporosis risk
My medical osteoporosis work up we’ll
Give you the link to that it’s right on
Betterbones.com
You take that document print it out and
Take it to your doc and say doc i’d like
Have i
Have i had all these tests if not i’d
Like all these tests
To see if there isn’t any hidden cause
Of bone loss before we start talking
About bone drugs
I can’t tell you the number of clients
Who come in have not been tested for
Anything and are told to take
Bone drugs and then later you found out
They were losing calcium in the urine or
They even had a parathyroid problem or
Their vitamin d was extremely low
Find out if there’s any medical causes
For you bone loss if you really have
Excessive bone loss
And number three of course you should
Take charge and do a complete
Better bones better body program get all
The nutrients like we outline
Develop an alkaline diet really look
Into the exercise remembering that when
You build muscle you build bone
Remember that stress really damages bone
And this is some of the most interesting
New research
Out of columbia university showing how
You sacrifice
Osteocalcin a very important bone
Protein
When you get fearful there are many
Aspects to building bone we have six
Steps to our program
Be sure to do each of those six steps
Simple that’s what you do those three
Things when your doctor says
You should take an osteoporosis drug be
Well we’ll talk later

A friend of mine was told to take bone-building drugs for her osteopoenia. She said "Um, no. I've heard some nasty things about those, so count me out." Her doctor sighed and said, "Yeah, I kind of agree with you."

My bone density test results came in to me along with to my doctor. I waited and never heard from her. I called to set up an appointment to go over my results. Instead Kroger notifies me I have a new prescription to pick up. Generic fosamax. My doctor never set up my appointment. Never discussed my results. Nothing. I'm not taking that crap. As soon as my Cancer Consultant heard or read that I had fractured my small toe, he prescribed Colcalciferol (Vit D) one daily. I know it’s working as my nails have never been so strong. However, after a uni-mastectomy in November 2021; I was told that my own Doctor would ask to see me approximately 6 months (May/June)2022…….I’m still waiting for that call.!!!

I am a medical tech who performs BMD . Recently my Dr suggested I go on treatment as my BMD in my spine is low. I asked him if he could run tests to see the underlying cause as Im very active, get a very could diet , no alcohol etc. He basically said all I can help you with is to give you meds and that’s it. I was so disappointed. I have not started meds and will go see a naturopathic Dr .

I work with horses. Throughbred trainers at Santa Anita were giving horses bone drugs. ( on their own doing, not prescribed by a Veterinarian ). Legs on young horses were snapping at an alarming rate. My oncologist wanted me on a bone drug and i refused. She asked me to drink only “ Gerolsteiner” German mineral water. I’ve been drinking that or Pelligrino water. They have the highest calcium and magnesium of all mineral waters.

My doctor put me on Prolia without first recommending a dental exam. My jaw bone shrunk significantly on Prolia and my teeth fell out and now I regularly get infections I’ve never had in my life. I’ve never fractured a bone and my fracture risk was only 1% and now my bones are worse off than before Prolia treatments. Prolia s a very powerful drug that can do more harm than good. It may help some but in my case, it ruined my life.

This doctor is so very right! I had a parathyroid tumor, discovered by my cardiologist, and had it removed. They looked at past medical records and told me I had that tumor for at least the last 7 years! They could tell just by looking at my blood calcium levels which were extremely high! I don’t like what the “bone drugs” ar doing, but I do take 1200 mg. Of slow release Citracal every day plus vitamins K1 and K2 - called Super K. K2 helps move calcium into bones and also does good things for the heart, which I also need.

While trying to help my elder sis with osteoporosis, her doc insisted on first, the drugs. Then when that made her sick, he put her on the long-acting injections. She was miserable for months after. Nauseous and fatigued. If the drugs just salvage the old cells and those cells are brittle, how does that help. She fell gently but that gentle fall snapped her leg and wrist, had surgery, died two days later. I just told my doc, no thank you.

Hello Johny, thank you for your comment, your questions are very interesting! Regarding kidney stones and calcium supplements, most authorities agree that they do not cause kidney stones, and they are more related to dehydration, lack of magnesium, and other factors. And, indeed it is okay to get your calcium from diet alone! Tamoxifen actually has a protective nature for bones and helping to prevent bone loss. I was on Tamoxifen for 5 years, which I understood to be the typical time frame. I am now on Anastrozole 1 mg daily and prior to these 2 cancer meds was diagnosed with moderate osteoporosis. I did see an endocrinologist to talk of my situation just last year and he did do all of the blood tests. He decided to have me take a break from the osteoporosis med I have been on for 7 years to give my body a rest from it. I had no side effects from the med, but there is risk of spontaneous femur fractures on the med, which the doctor says he occasionally sees. 😳. I am now due to restart Fosamax, but am taking my time to decide what I will do. I believe my risk for fracture is quite low, I go to the gym daily, eat well and take Mg and Vit D daily. But, being over 65 in itself is some kind of increased risk for injury with fracture. So currently on pause still.

i'm 72 with a foot fracture due to an accident. Small boned and fair. Diagnosed with osteoporosis several years ago based on DEXA. My doc wants me on Forteo. But I did the research as I always do. The only downside he mentioned was the cost - not the increased risk of 3 different types of bone cancers, or other side effects. Or having to inject it daily for 18 months. I'm contacting Dr. Brown soon.

If the woman is menopausal and is within the window of opportunity, less than 10 years, then estrogen replacement will help stop the bone loss, but not rebuild what was lost. Hormone replacement at menopause isn't a known cause of breast cancer. If it was breast cancer would be seen in women as young as their late teen years

So true!!!! Before the WHI study which the breast cancer arm was reported incorrectly and and blown out of proportion obgyns routinely handed women HRT. After the study broke there is now a sandwich generation of women struggling with bone loss and cardiovascular disease autoimmune disease and dementia leading to alzheimers due to complete loss of female hormones at menopause. Best not to take bone drugs if you have Factor V Leiden, as I do, or other clotting disorders. Also, my doctor pestered me so much about bone loss drugs that I tried it, Fosamax for 3 weeks. My chemo-induced neuropathy flared up horribly. I stopped bone drugs immediately, but it took over 4 months for neuropathy to calm down to a tolerable level. No thanks to bone loss drugs.

Thank god no surgery required and bone healed well. Went for dexa scan which revealed osteoporosis/osteopenia. Are we meant to have the same bones in our 60s that we do in our 30s? Recently I was diagnosed with osteoporosis I'm only 39 years old, but I know why I have this it's because of my years of excessive exercise and under eating I started getting into healthy lifestyle at age 19 but I've made many many mistakes along the way, for many years I've been under eating while maintaining a very active lifestyle I also didn't menstrate throughout my twenties I started menstruating again at age 32 after I had a tubal ligation somehow that procedure jump started my period but then I recently lost my period again because I started string training and not eating enough to support string training, so now my doctor wants me to take medication for my osteoporosis but I don't want to!! If I can treat this the natural way I'm definitely going to do that I know I have to increase my calorie intake and I have done that I'm trying to learn as much information as I can I'm very terrified though I've been very depressed since my diagnosis and I feel so ashamed for being young and having this because everyone I've talked to said it's very rare for someone in their thirties to have this, chances are I've already had osteoporosis for years and maybe didn't know it until this doctor ordered me to have a bone scan after I told her my history

I would prefer to carry on taking a low dose of vitamin D as I was under the impression that I don't need to worry about toxicity since I take it with K2. Won’t know if it slows down my bone loss till my next dexa. I’m hopeful tho bc of other improvements I’ve had in just a few months. Hello, thank you very much for the great video. If only I had seen it earlier. I received the second dose of Prolia/Xgeva. After three days, the problems started. For a month now, l've had respiratory infections, fever, fatigue, and no appetite. Before taking the medication, I used to go to the gym, but now I can't do anything. I have cancer, including bone metastases. However, with targeted drug therapy, the cancer has regressed. At the last check-up, unfortunately, a brain tumor has appeared, although I was stable before Prolia. I'm only 40 years old. Can I now skip two trial injections without any problems? I have fibromyalgia, diagnosed in 2007,but had it long before then. I was on Lyrica 4yrs developed bone pain, so stopped it. I was put on cymbalta- horrible drug, was on it one year. There was a 3 week period where it worked like a MIRACLE...then pooped out. I couldn't get off of it fast enough to save my sanity. Took me 16mos from start until I could tell it was out of my brain. Then I got a severe sinus infection, for 6wks. Sulfamethoxazole antibiotic nearly destroyed my stomach. NOW doc wants me to do Reclast infusion. I declined due to horrible reviews I read. Doc asked if I would be willing to take Boniva. I AM TERRIFIED due to ALL the different meds docs have experimented on me since diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Im dammed if I do & dammed if I dont.#AFRAID OF NEW MEDS!!!! I have osteoporosis. I want to trust in medicine- but my track record is poor! What to do??? I was on Fosamax for 2+half yrs. Stopped because it hurt my stomach. Every med seems to cause stomach issues- & why side effects make me say NO!

I did not take meds when told I have severe osteoporosis. I would have taken forteo then. Now I just had a spinal fracture and am pretty much disabled for now. I will start tymlos soon and wish ai had taken something to prevent this. Once you have a fracture especially vertebral you are at much higher risk for another. Which test specifically tests bone breakdown? I have had all those other tests and still no clear reason why I had severe O only 3 years after early meno. I didn't find out I had osteoporosis until after I had already had several fractures, though at that point they were not confirmed. (I'd had one x-ray through a chiropractor; my doctor wasn't interested enough in my complaint of near chronic pain and an inch and a half of height loss to pursue it, and I didn't know, osteoporosis wasn't on my radar.) So I can confirm, well, actually I don't know if catching this 4 years ago (when I broke my wrist, and no one even whispered the O word, but I'm guessing the O in my spine was already "severe" because I now think I'd already fractured my sacrum, before I broke my wrist,) would have helped, except maybe I wouldn't have continued to try to fix it by trying to get stronger only to injure myself (fracture?) anew? I just don't know if drugs would've helped. But I know for sure, you don't want to be at the "multiple fracture, plus (now) 3 inches in height lost (I hope it's only 3, I'm afraid it might be more, now; I have been able to literally feel my upper torso descending into my pelvis/abdomen, and it's gotten worse just recently, with what I know is a new fracture (yet to be confirmed on x-ray, though, which...I have to go to urgent care and ask for,)...anyway, you don't want to get to this place. But are drugs the answer for someone like me? I'm willing to try, but our insurance denied Evenity--"not medically necessary". So I'm dabbling in Fosamax, not holding out much hope. Just praying I'll get past this new pain, and that I'll manage to not do "something stupid" for long enough to not feel like my life revolves around pain. (I'm 62. Too young to be "screened" for osteoporosis.)

Do not take! The side effects were horrible after just one dose. Threw up and felt nauseous the whole day. The next day, chest and back pain. Can lose hair and have increased chance of strokes. Looking into Evista now as the least of all evils.

I ignored the advice to take drugs - and then ended up with a spine fracture at age 59 that has totally ruined my life. Scamming people to sell supplements is not ethical or scientifically backed.

I can't spend extra $ on tests That my insurance probably won't pay for. I wasn't aware until recently that levothyroxineay affect bone density. So I've been taking it since 2013 & was never advised that could happen. After recent bone density screening I am supposed to talk with pharmacy specialist about drug prescription. Have never broken a bone. Why don't Drs. advise protocol for nutrition, exercise?

Know that the doctors are afraid of the insurance companies because they don’t like too much testing. That will cost them money. The doctors look after themselves not our wellbeing.

Say No immediately!! Bone drugs killed my mother in law !! She was poisoned by them and she died a slow painful death as a result of the side effects.!!! You should be ashamed telling a person to go through all that bull in talking to a doctor, just say No !! Eat right and exercise !!!
