Man! That is an amazing book! Many years ago it started me on my spiritual journey from being an amateur motor cycle mechanic trying to keep a BSA Bantam on the road! I’m now a 70+ y.o. retired amateur motorcycle mechanic and that book still resides in my collection somewhere! Mmmmm. Spiritually is never really reached. It’s an ongoing journey of frustration, more so than trying to be a motorcycle mechanic and woodworker. Thank you for a very informative router build.

One solution would be to grind/file the two sides of the washer down so the total width of the washer is the same as the diameter of the allen head bolt. A different solution would to to find an allen head washer that is the same outer diameter as the allen head bolt.

If that’s a concern there is still the depth lock on the router to double check it stays in place. My last system just had a small jack under it and the bit never raised

great video.. shame that people give out some snide remarks.. they're not paying for this 'free' video.. LOL.. I'm in the middle doing something like this. My Silverline 1500w router has a depth stop but it is enclosed rather that sticking out like on yours. What i cant seem to find on its own is the captive little rod (20mm long?) that the long threaded bolt is going through? there must be a name for it. I think i have enough casting to drill though on mine and fit one of them. Anyway.. grateful for your work 👍👍😊😊

Wow, perfect - i have this router (love it!) But no table router until now. I'm curious about the collet extension - give that the plate isn't adding much thickness after you've removed he original router base, do you need the extension?

Thanks Paul, yeah I want to change out the bits above the table, plus the extension just needs an allen key to change bits instead of spanners, and I’m all the spanner my workshop needs sometimes lol

Nice work. A quick question - if I do not use the locking lever on the router, the bit seems to have a bit of play as it sticks above the table. Is this normal or do I just have a cronky router? Once locked in, it's rock solid - but none of the diy or commercial lifts seem to have a method for engaging the locking lever.

For future reference. Use epoxy resin to hold things in place as it self levels and if you smear the bolt or whatever you want to move with Vaseline the epoxy will not stick to it.

If you had a hot glue gun you could have filled the section in the router base for a flat surface to support the washers. I've had the bits to do this with my old Dewalt unit for ages and not got round to it yet. I'm planning on having the head end of the bolt in a cartridge bearing so make it nice and smooth.
@WoodworkJourney

I have got one, and that’s a pretty great idea! Although in my head the plywood in there helps distribute the pressure a little more evenly if I over tighten - which inevitably happens lol

@@WoodworkJourney I'll be honest, I put this comment in before you got to adding the chunk of wood. I must learn not to comment too soon!! Another question: do you foresee any issues with the unit rising up after having taken the springs out? I still have one spring in mine that I plan to retain to keep it from moving too much. I guess you could close the latch to hold it in place if needed.
@WoodworkJourney
@WoodworkJourney 11 ай бұрын
Somebody else asked that as well. You have to do what you feel safe with obviously. However, I’ve had my other table router without springs for over a year without issue. The Rutlands router is also pretty damn heavy. But for extra assistance the depth lock is still working so once set I could pop that on

There’s always other solutions. Like I mentioned in the other video, Steve Ramsey on Woodworking For Mere Mortals did an excellent jig build that is much bigger and a relatively chunky wooden structure. But previously I’ve used a small jack, and also moved it manually. My focus is in cheap and easy as much as I can though

It would work on any plunge router I’ve had as long as it has the depth gauge. Might need some extra drilling out but most I’ve seen would do it. If it’s a fixed base/palm router then it won’t but there are super cheap lifts for those on Amazon
