What you have to understand when he talks about beautiful death, it's not that he has a simple deathwish, in Sparta the only ones who had earned the right to a gravestone were men who died in battle and women who died while giving birth and this of course means that for a man to die in battle he had to be able to fight so the vets kept participating and fighting hardest as their combat years were nearing their end and may miss their chance.

@@galadballcrusher8182 Yeah, and to my knowledge, Spartans didn't have the same problem with growing old and dying of old age that, say, the Vikings did. For Vikings, to die of old age meant you would be denied access to Valhalla. But to a Spartan, to grow old and die of old age meant that you were unkillable on the battlefield and no one could challenge your skill as a warrior.

What the Oracle at Delphi actually said to Leonidas was that if he went to war, he could not take the full Spartan army with him or it would bring bad luck to Sparta (that's why he only took his 300-man personal guard, so as not to potentially offend the Gods). But more importantly, the Oracle told him that Sparta was only allowed to go to war if it was prepared to suffer terrible losses, and if King Leonidas himself was prepared to die, because the death of a Spartan king would be REQUIRED for Persia to be ultimately defeated.

The film is highly stylised but showed the character of the spartan culture. However the Spartans were the original heavy infantry they fought armoured from head to toe in bronze. Even when the other Greek city states began adopting lighter composite armour using boiled leather reinforced with thin bronze plates they stuck with heavy solid armour because with their superior training and physical conditioning they could keep going in battle evenwith the extra weight.

:How does this work with horses?" when horses were commonly used in warfare, they were typically occupied by nobility, officers, etc. Tactically, Horsemen served the same function today that Tanks would: punching a hole in a line of infantry, outflanking, scouting, etc. However, in the face of disciplined infantry, cavalry (horsemen) could be broken. Such training however was time consuming and expensive. This is one reason Spartans stood out amongst there peers.

The reason the Spartans were so devastating as a military force is that they had such a high number of slaves. The slaves (or Helots) did most of the day to day work, and the Spartans themselves were left to train. Other city-states, by comparison, only took up arms when it was time for battle. Because of that, their phalanx wasn’t as well trained, and therefore not as strong.

I've seen so many reactions to this film asking about why there is a "random hole" in Sparta. It's not a random hole. It's a WELL. The Spartans threw these messengers down a well. This actually DID happen in history, but it happened ten years BEFORE Thermopylae, and it was what led to the Battle Of Marathon. Persia sent messengers to both Sparta AND Athens to demand earth and water (as well as taxes), and both Greek city-states had their respective Persian messengers executed, thus spitting in the Persian Empire's face. Sparta threw their Persian messengers down a well, while Athens threw its Persian messengers into a pit where they would throw condemned criminals.

It was a common tactic by the sneaky Persians to play loud background music by Tyler Bates to cover the sounds of their galloping cavalry as they crept up behind you and cut your head off. #truestory

It wasn't just 10,000 Spartans at the end, there were also 30,000 other Greeks soldier behind them, making a total of 40,000

I read somewhere that the Persians had 300 000 soldiers meaning that the 300 men who fought with leonidas were outnumbered 1000 to 1 😅

A great movie that no one ever reacts to is called Immortals ironically enough. It stars Henry Cavill (plays Superman in the DC movies) and Mickey Rourke. It is also a similar story about a Greek (Theseus). It isn't as quite as good as this movie (to me personally), but the film making and color choices and gradients are next level. In fact, I think they are done by the same person that did Life of Pi (won several academy awards). Anyhoo...... if Greek stories are your thing I'd check that out and the Clash of the Titans movies (Perseus and Medusa and the Kraken). All neat and different movies, but the style of the Greek storytelling is present in them all.

Yeah many elite soldiers are like the Spartans. You KNOW you are better then the enemy and fear means that you or someone else on your team dies. There are many movies that show this.
