The men used to execute Maximus and his family with the purple cloaks were Praetorians, guards specifically assigned to defend the emperor. Those guys weren't fighting under Maximus in the war.

Great movie. This movie has one of my favorite quotes "I don't pretend to be a man of the people but I do try to be a man for the people" by Gracchus. You know the actor who play Gracchus played Claudius the emperor that is mention in the movie in a great mini series I, Claudius. Other great Russell Crowe movies you should see is A Beautiful Mind, L.A. Confidential ,The Next Three Days. Other great period movies are Rob Roi 1995 with Liam Nissan and The Count of Monte Cristo 2002

Gladiator was heavily fictionalized, Maximus was not a real guy. (Commodus was a real emperor and was basically as bad as portrayed, but he was not killed in the ring. The conspiracy got his training partner to strangle him in his bath)

in the roman empire the word of the emperor was almighty and you had no other chaise then to obey, so commodus ordering his praetorian guard to execute him, they would blindly obey.
