Sparta and Athens had been enemies for a hundred years , nobody would have expected them to fight on the same side until then . Poor tymisticleas he lead the war effort against the Persians and win but his enemies envied him and arranged to have him exiled from Greece, with he never saw again he actually died of natural causes ( old age ) in Persia

Many combat ships were made for ramming in this time period (mostly in the Mediterranean sea as they were unstable in deep water) next to fire ships to was the only way to sink the enemy ship.

elinator600gaming Do you have any idea when the anchor was invented? To my knowledge, ships of this time did not have anchors, so every night they had to beach their ships on the shore because they couldn't stay seaborne at night, so I really want to know when did the usage of anchors on ships come into being.

Here's an overview for the timeline of the events of the Greco-Persian War for you two so you have kind of an idea of the events that inspired these films: --540 BC-Athens overthrows its king with help from Sparta and starts a new form of government called Demos Kratia, which today is called Democracy. The Spartans refuse to go home after the uprising, so Athens kicks them out, but fears a counterattack. They make a deal with Persia for help, not understanding that Persia includes a clause in their deal that in reality says they now OWN Athens. Sparta, however, counterattacks so quickly Athens has no time to ask Persia for help. Athens fights more ferociously than ever and beats Sparta all on its own, and decides it's treaty with Persia is basically null and void, and then makes the mistake of telling Persia about it. Persia doesn't take too kindly to that. --500-499 BC-The colony of Ionia rebels against Persia and Athens sends troops to support the uprising. The revolt ends up failing, but Persia's king, Darius (Xerxes's Dad) becomes obsessed with vengeance against Athens. So obsessed that he orders one of his servants to, every night when Darius sits down to dinner, whisper in his ear "Sire, do not forget the Athenians." --490 BC-Battle Of Marathon. Darius launches his invasion of Athens, and his 30,000 man force lands at the bay of Marathon, 26 miles from Athens. 11,000 Greeks led by Athens meet them at Marathon and absolutely kick the crap out of them. Persians lose 6,000 men, while the Greeks only lose 192. When the battle is over, a Greek runner runs from Marathon to Athens, shouts out "Nike!" meaning "Victory!" then collapses from exhaustion/a heart attack/a stroke (this is where we get the phrase "run a marathon", and how the distance of running modern-day marathons is determined) --480 BC-Battles Of Artemisium and Thermopylae. Leonidas and Themistokles meet in Athens to finalize the battle plan to meet Persia's second invasion, led by Xerxes (Darius was NOT killed at Marathon, he wasn't even AT that battle. He was planning a second invasion of Greece in the ten-year interval between Marathon and Thermopylae, but died of natural causes before he could carry the plan out). Leonidas decided to lead the land force (7,000 men, led by him and his 300 Spartans) to Thermopylae and hold the Persian land force off there, while Themistokles takes a section of the Greek navy he's been building in preparation for this second invasion to the bay of Artemisium to hold of the Persian navy, led by a Greek woman named Artemisia (also, the Persian invasion force is NOT a million strong, it's more like a quarter to half a million, but that's STILL a massive army). Both battles take place on the same three days (August 27th, 28th, and 29th), and fighting is brutal on both fronts, but despite inflicting heavy casualties on the Persian forces, the Greeks get the worst of it. When word reaches Themistokles that Thermopylae has fallen, he orders the Greek fleet to retreat to Salamis. --480 BC-Battle Of Salamis. Xerxes arrives at Athens and burns the city to the ground, but nearly all of the citizens and the Athenian army and navy have managed to evacuate, thanks to Leonidas and his remaining forces on the final day of Thermopylae. Themistokles tricks Xerxes by sending a message to him saying he needs to block the bay of Salamis to prevent the Greek fleet from escaping. Artemisia takes the Persian fleet there, but finds no one inside the bay. Themistokles then traps the PERSIAN fleet inside the bay of Salamis, and his ships, which are smaller and more maneuverable than the Persian ones, are able to surround and annihilate the Persian fleet (in the film, Artemisia is killed at this battle, but in actual history, she SURVIVES Salamis and escapes back to Persia. Xerxes pays her VERY high praise and tribute for being such an effective naval commander, even going so far as to commission a full set of Greek armor to be made for her). --479 BC-Battle Of Plataea. Sparta is now ruled by a man named Pausinias. He is spoiling to take the fight to Persia and finish them off once and for all, but he's hesitant about allying with Athens to do so. He goes to the Oracle at Delphi and asks if Sparta should join the unified Greek land army that is being assembled to finish the Persians off. The Oracle tells him yes, Sparta must LEAD this unified army because Sparta must exact compensation for King Leonidas's death at Thermopylae. Specifically, Sparta must kill Xerxes's greatest general, Mardonius (Xerxes has had to return to Persia to put down uprisings in his own country and left Mardonius in charge of the army). A total of at least 90,000 Greeks (40,000 of which are Spartans) meet the Persian army (which outnumbers them three to one) at Plataea, and ends up completely smashing them. In the midst of the fighting, it is said that one of the Spartans spots Mardonius, grabs a rock and throws it at the Persian general, striking him in the head and knocking him off his horse, killing him and fulfilling the Oracle's prophecy.

In answer to your question at about 9:15, yes, Greek Triremes were made specifically for ramming enemy ships. Naval cannons like we're familiar with on our modern navies didn't exist back then, so naval warfare was conducted by either boarding enemy ships or ramming them. After the Greco-Persian war, there was a lot more emphasis on boarding enemy ships to capture them, and this lead to the creation of specialized soldiers specifically trained to board and capture and/or sink enemy vessels. These soldiers were known as the Epibatai (sorry if I've misspelled that term), and they were the ancestors of what we would call the Marines today. But what really made the Greek Trireme so revolutionary was the fact that it had three rows of oarsmen (hence the name Trireme, which means "three layers/rows). Typical naval vessels of this time had at most, two rows of oarsmen. In 1985, a group of historians and archaeologists reconstructed an ancient Greek Trireme from ancient Greek schematics which they named "Olympias". Construction was finished two years later, and about 170 oarsmen and oarswomen volunteered to crew it. They were testing to see if ancient Greek historians were exaggerating when they talked about the Trireme's capabilities, but the results they got in the initial test launch blew their minds. Olympias was able to achieve a maximum speed of about 9 knots (for a short while, and it probably could go even faster if it was being rowed by trained naval soldiers), and it was able to make 180-degree turns inside of 60 seconds.

He didn't kill Artemesia in real life. Movies almost always weaken the female characters. The American version of "girl with the dragon tattoo" makes Lizbeth seem like a scrawny weakling but in the original Swedish version & the book she's a badass.

The war between Iran and Greece in Thermopil has historical authenticity, but in this film there are many historical lies and the culture of Iranians has been insulted... After capturing Athens, Xerxes called for all greek people who have fled to return and respect their beliefs and the gods... Years later, when Alexander the Macedonian invaded Iran, Ario Barzan defended and was killed in a state similar to this film, but Alexander set Fire to Persepolis and burned the Iranian Bible.
