When Whitney Houston had mega success covering Dolly Parton's song, "I Will Always Love You" - reporters asked Dolly if she was bothered by Whitney taking credit for it. Dolly said, "She can say whatever she likes as long as I keep getting the checks - $6 million so far !"

My kids, all excited: "Mom! You must hear this new song, it is awesome." Me, singing along and getting a kick out of the confusion on their faces, then I play them the original or another version and sometimes they actually prefer the original.

I remember doing that as a kid in both the 70's and '80's. Every time my mum strolled out singing the words to what I thought was a brand new song, my jaw hit the ground! My mum must of had fun with us kids. She's been gone for about 2 1/2 yrs & I miss her everyday. All you guys who still have a Mum or Mom you love, tell her. Tell her everytime you can & hug her for me.

Yeah, sometimes the cover can reinterpret the meaning of the song. For example, Aretha Franklin's cover of "Respect" reinterpreted the song from a misogynist expectation of his woman into an anthem for women power. Another example is Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt". After really listening to Cash's version, Trent Reznor said "It's not my song anymore."

Respect by Otis Redding is a particular favorite of mine. I had a college professor who loved Aretha Franklin's version and thought it was the original, written as a feminist anthem. When I pointed out that it was written by a man and originally meant to be from the point of view of a hard working man whose wife doesn't respect him, she about blew a gasket. (I love Aretha Franklin's version too, mind you.)

Weird that they mentioned all the "You Raised Me Up" versions and didn't mention that the whole melody is lifted from "Danny Boy", lyrics written in 1913, which is a version of "Londonderry Air" which was found in a book published by the Society for the Preservation and Publication of the Melodies of Ireland in the 1855 book "The Ancient Music of Ireland", and that song is ancient, as the title suggests.

For "I got my mind set on you": 12 times in the chorus plus 2 more in the bridge. However if you count "set on you" in the whole song. It is used 32 times (8 of those are in the outro). One of the more interesting covers is "Tainted Love", originally by Gloria Jones released in 1965, covered by Soft Cell in 1981, then by Marilyn Manson in 2001. I'm actually a huge fan of cover songs, particularly punk or rock covers of non-punk or non-rock songs. Compare "Turn Down for What" by DJ Snake and Lil Jon with the cover by Upon a Burning Body and Ice-T; or Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" by I Prevail. Also, a band called Our Last Night posts cover versions of songs on a weekly basis. Alex Melton does a great job of covering songs in different styles (and even sub-genres, like what if Angels and Airwaves wrote "Ocean Avenue" by Yellowcard).

Cover versions were quite common in the 50s and 60s, and labels would have songwriting teams producing songs that were given to several artists who would put out their versions and compete in the charts. Here in the UK, there was often a rush to record new songs arriving from the US (Liverpool being a major port contributed to it being such an important place for new music in the UK in the 1950s and 60s).

It was so much different in the 1950s and even into the early 60s when even songs were segregated. With the same songs, artists like Elvis and The Beatles were credited with revolutionizing rock and roll while they received first class tickets to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, while true fathers of rock and roll, like Chuck Berry and Jackie Wilson received very little white radio and television play time. There is a great piece written in 1973 for Harpers magazine called Ripping Off Black Music, by Margo Jefferson (which is still available on line).

Many of these original songs were not radio hits for the original artists, or were just album tracks that not too much of the public had heard of ... so it was the cover versions that brought some of these great songs to a larger pop audience. Dolly Parton had a No. 1 country hit with "I Will Always Love You" in 1974, but it didn't cross over to the pop charts. Dolly was laughing all the way to the bank when she started getting the songwriting royalties for Whitney Houston's massive No. 1 pop cover from 1992. :-)

Manfred Mann's Earth Band actually did three covers of Bruce Springsteen songs, apparently they were mainstays of their live shows they wanted to put them on their albums. Also, since you seemed a bit surprised by the number of covers some artists did, a lot of music from the 50s and 60s were either covers or songs written my some one other than the artist, it wasn't really until the late 60s where a lot of singers and bands started writing their own stuff and even then there were still a lot of bands that played primarily covers.

They blew it on Wind Beneath My Wings. Secret Garden is also a cover. It was the theme song for the movie Beaches released in December 1988 and won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1990.

I think it also depends on the time, sometime songs and sounds just aren't ready for the time but they are later. Remember alot of songs from the past had a lot of race and appropriate for the time.

On the one hand that was a really fun video. On the other hand I now feel really old. It was the songs where the cover was pretty darn old that I remembered the originals that were even older. Dang. Just so you know there was a time that most recording artists were not songwriters, and most songwriters were not recording artists. Song choices were not always up to the singer. You'll find most big names sang mostly covers. Might I suggest a video for the future? Take a prolific songwriter such as Willie Nelson and highlight how many times and how many different people covered their songs. Thank you for a wonderful channel.

OMG!!!! You HAVE to explore all the covers Led Zepplin did. Most of them are the hard blues songs. One is “When the Levee Breaks” was originally done by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. There are other covers they did from around that time. You must include them!

Lets clear something up here. The first recording of the song, when the song is a filler on a album and has not been released as single, doesn't make it a cover. Like Lady Marmalade which appeared on The Eleventh Hour's greatest hits album and was recorded the same year as Labelle. Close to You was never released as single by Richard Chamberlain, which is why the songwriters would be interested in getting it recorded and released. Dionne Warwick also recorded the song, before the Carpenters. Janis Joplin's Piece of My Heart, was a cover of Erma Franklin's 1967 R & B hit. Dionne's sister Dee Dee recorded Alfie before Dionne, but since no one know about it, it's not considered a cover.

Black artist back in the day had a hard time breaking through The stations wouldn’t play them or put their pictures on album covers because of the color of their skin somethings are just not right. There’s a lot of them were thankful for the covers because it made their song known and copyright monies they got was OK

I suspect the original artists don't mind as long as they get the writing royalties (I believe writers get more than artists and remixers even less)

some of these are in the same year or only a year apart, and it makes me wonder if the record label gave the song to one singer/group and it didn't do well, so then they gave it to another group/singer and it had success.

Alrighty then! Here we go! I am surprised as you are about this video. incredible but there it is. Your are correct that there are so many I didn't know were covers Except for Elvis, we eventually learned that bit of that information as we were discovering the background of music on some radio stations. One or two Dj's would share background stories with their listeners. I also knew about the song called Bobby McGee. It inspires me to want to listen to the originals now. I agree some covers sound better than the originals but I would like to hear the originals now! Much appreciated that you to reacted to this video! Thank you! On to part two! Peace! ✌☮

I think the thing that's missing is this discussion is talking about who wrote the song. You'd be surprised to find out how many artists do not write their own songs. They have to either borrow songs from other writers or do covers to help fill an album. and in the old days albums were how they got paid before the digital era. That's the way the whole country music industry works. There are record companies here, I'm from nashville, who hire songwriters to do nothing but turn out hit songs for their artists. My uncle co-wrote songs that were big hits back in the '60s for artists like Ricky Nelso, TN Ernie Ford, Ray Stevens and Patsy Ckune. His family still gets royalties off of those songs.

Keep in mind, especially on the covers that seem to happen close to the original, that a group that doesn't become successful will sell or license their song to another singer. Sometimes the actual songwriter or even the label might own the song as well and let different talent sing it.

Bro, Bruce was a legend of the 60s. It was just hella common for his songs to have mad covers, and a lot of bands that weaved their way through the 70s were bands that started out singing requests out house parties and local pubs/bars. Having the Boss in your repertoire was just the norm.

I had no idea that "you are always on my mind" was a cover by Elvis. I thought he sang the original and the Pet Shop Boys did the cover to this elvis song. And Bobby McGee.. I was so sure it was written for Janis Joplin.
