Join Steven Shumey of CE Performance Crate Engines as he thoughtfully installs, with friend and customer, Scott Mackintosh, the recently dyno tested 1.889 horsepower per cubic inch 349 LS into Scott's 1970 Chevy Nova. Also being installed: a Tremec Magnum 6-speed transmission (which will be mated to 4.56 gears to perfectly take this Nova through the RPM range!)

It's things like this that make me wish I was not this old, but I did get to drive a 1969 Z/28 off of the lot. Worthless with the stock gear, 3.73 if I recall, but in the magazine "Hot Rod" they went with a 4.88 and so did I. It excelled at eating Mopar's alive.

@@ceperformance This was back before radar was in every police car and now there are so many township departments it's not worth the risk. In addition, I must say, the 4.88 with a 2.20 first gear was 7.08. My 2007 Z06 Vette with a 4.10 and a 2.66 first is 6.76, close, but the T56 transmission and the linkage from the front to the rear will not allow the "real" no lift shift like the M21 with a Hurst shifter bolted right to it. The 0.50 sixth gear still lets it get over 20 MPG around town, third gear is a killer when passing.

I love the stick shifts too. The most exciting one in my past was a 1965 Impala, 454 with a Jerico drag race 4 speed (on the street!) Clutchless shifting at 7000!! Good times.

@@ceperformance OMG, we are on the same page! If I was F**k You money rich, I would love to build an LS-7, 7.0L, destroked to 3.00, way over square, about 320 cubic inches. I did go off the rails with mine and put Crower shaft rockers on it. Over kill for the street, but these motors have a tendency to swallow exhaust valves. Some do, some don't.

My goal is to build a 361 LS. I’d use a tall deck LSX block, 3.267” stroke and 6.56” rods making it 2:1 rod ratio. Aiming for 2x HP per cubic inch on pump gas for a street car :)

Why not use a 3.62 crank? There aren’t any forged in that stroke unless you go Bryant… and forged 3.6” cranks are really affordable / lots of options including from gm

Hello and thank you for asking. There are several reasons why we built it this way and the simplest answer is because we wanted to! It wasn’t because of a lack of options nor was it to just use parts we had laying around. Every part was chosen for a specific reason and the crankshaft was the first decision. Bottom line: the results speak for themselves that this combo has a purpose. Not every build needs to be a a stock bore/stroke or a big Stroker for that matter. 1.889 HP per cubic inch out of a pump gas V8 N/A street engine? Pretty happy with that :) Thanks for watching!
