Hi Nik! Question about quantity for a vintage shop. A lot of my ephemera quantities are low because once it’s gone, it’s gone. For instance, I sold a vintage travel diary a few days ago that was a documentation of a man’s trips in the 50s, if I remember right. There is only one of things like that. So, when things like that sell, does it affect visibility that there’s no replacement? Feel free to use my shop as an example for this sort of item. (Feed the Birdies) On a more exciting note, I’ve noticed that using your SEO strategy with titles and tags has put me in the top 1-2% of some common search terms with 10k+ listings!! I’m so excited about that, and thank you for sharing your wisdom. You know the back end of Etsy better than Etsy does. 😂

The issue with stock quantity can be easily addressed. Instead of manufacturing 10 units before listing them, you can set the availability to 'Made to Order' and list the quantity as 999. The advantage of a frequently viewed and sold listing outweighs the downside of a longer shipping time. However, stores that adopt this strategy often face a new problem: when sales are low, they don't realize they can't produce enough items to make a decent profit. The real challenge for such stores lies in production, not in sales.

Oh thank goodness. I have an old Etsy store with a few thousand sales. I was afraid you were going to make an example out of me. 😂 I took a break for a number of years when I had baby #1 and baby #2. So even though my store will say I've been on Etsy for well over ten years, I've only been active for less than half of that.

So, i am trying right now to implement what i saw on your etsy SEO video, even though, i am not sure if i am doing correctly. But i really cannot have is like 10 plus on one item. Because many times, i can only have one. And if somebody would buy two, i wil be in trouble, lol. So, does it hurt my shop really? Because, yes my shop is technically dead😀. But glad to found you. Spent lot of money on those so called etsy coaches with no outcome what so ever.

Hi there, thanks for your comment. Yes even if you only have 1 of an item list at least 20. You won't be in trouble with anyone if someone buys two, you explain to the customer that there is only 1 of the items they have bought, and if they can wait you will make another one ( if this is possible for that particular item), if not suggest an alternative and worst case scenario refund them.

Hi! First of all, I would like to thank you for all your help with such nice and detailed videos. I have a brand new shop and unfortunately I found your videos after I had already opened it the way I thought it would be best. 😒 My issue is the same as some others' here. I make one of a kind wall hung jewelry display organizers that cannot be duplicated, so I can only have 1 available at a time. But if it sells, I will just change the images with a new one (I make them regularly) and renew it right away. What advice can you give me.? My shop is called fixedsense.

I don’t really understand why Etsy would lower your visibility due to an item being out of stock when they are based with handmade items. Most handmade items where one of a kinds - why would Etsy (for lack of better term) penalize you for selling out items? I get you won’t get the views for that item so it that what your saying?

Etsy works on recency, it needs to know what is current, selling and available.

when u say personalize, how would she personalize ? By making an item a certain color or stitching a name or a different item all together? offering to gift wrap and mail direct is all I can do with paintings???

HI sue, gift wrapping can be personalized with a message, or customized itself. Yes, adding names, accessories, colors, correct.

Does it still hurt your visibility if only one variation goes out of stock but the listing is still live? For example, the second listing you clicked on had multiple colour & size options. Would this still get the same recency boost & Q score if one variation sold out vs a sale leaving all variations still in stock?

OK, so no one actually knows the answer to this except Etsy. However, I think that variations are like the valves on an engine, and quality score is given to each variation when it sells, and if one sells out that means the overall quality score value of a listing (the engine) will go down.

@@etsyconsultant just to add on as an afterthought.... since I learned about quality score, (mostly from you, thank you!), I've been trying to tie custom orders (which I do a lot of) into relevant general listings with stock depth by creating a new 'reserved' variation & sending the customer photos vs making a standalone listing which will be instantly bought & sold out (& therefore accrue no q score). I thought this might be better to appease the algorithm. What do you think? Does creating a variation, then deleting it after a sale, hinder me more than creating a standalone custom listing which won't be renewed? My gut says no but I'd appreciate your thoughts or suggestions! Also, is it true shops don't have quality scores, only listings?

If you read this shop owners about page, you'll see she has two children, she may have closed shop several times when raising her children in that time, (as I did myself many times) she also lives on a farm so this shop may be a side line to that, therefore 3500 sales over 12 years is 24 sales a month, for an item that's hand made and that may take a long time to make, that's pretty good. I don't think its realistic or fair to just use sweeping generalisations and use a 'one for all critique style' to all shops, and imply they are not successful or doing something wrong, this is not a shop selling crystals or mass produced jewellery findings from China. She may be perfectly comfortable with the volume of sales as they are, all things considered, after all, this is what attracted sellers to Etsy in the first place, it's Etsy not Amazon.

Thanks for your comment, I understand your point of view. The critique is based on 10 years of completing thousands of store audits, and is this way for good reason. The seller asked for the critique and there are plenty of areas in this store that need work. I am here to educate and help people, sometimes the advice may raise differing opinions.
