This videos has come a great time because I am ready to try some flood and drain with clay media! Not indoors, but I think it's going to be a lot easier thana bell siphon for me.

Love your videos mate. The flood and drain you need lot bigger drain pipes, lest double your in pipe size, faster you can get the water out the more oxygen you will force down into the roots though the clay or what ever base you use.

I have been wanting a 3D printer ever since the Ender 3 came out, but have been putting it off for a bit to allow the space to mature. After watching your video's, I realized we are at that point now, so I am super excited to have a printer in route to me :) I haven't used ebay for years, but found one new for $100 off Amazon's lowest price. I am going to have to keep a better eye on that!!! So far, I have been having very good experiences using them.

awesome design separate the inlet and outlet with a wall in between to help force water through and around then down the drain

Great design. That is always a problem I have with ebb and flow the roots growing in to the drain/input. Your design would help because you could see it happening instead of being buried in hydroton. Cool timelapse and camera dolly! You need a PAR meter.

I love that you designed this system, I always wanted to design my own, now I don't need to! Btw. don't use TPU as a sealing agent, you can use cheap o-rings instead... They are so cheap... Also, after watching most of the video: I think they might be leaking, because you have to seal two times, one time under the box (like you did) and one time on the bottom of the box. I think it might be better to increase the hole size of the box, so it does not interfere with the seal of the flood / drain valves. You would mount them like the commercial ones and put the box over them to protect the valves from media & roots. There is also the option to simply not use the box, if one decides to cut the cost even more. Or use the box with commercial valves. You could even leave the bottom of the box open!

You need two seals on each penetration. One in the box, one between the box and play pool. What about creating silicone seals with a mold and a tube of silicone from bunnings? Inject into the mold, Let it set for a few days and then peal them out to finish curing.

G'day Hoocho, you might want to try to leave your reservoir pump on for 10 minutes for feeding. It gives the plants a reasonable time to absorb what they need. I also add air pump and an air stone to the resevoir.

Love the idea, well done. Have a suggestion not sure if its a good idea or not. Have you considered creating a bell siphon kind of drain on the right side instead of overflow? I just ask because looking at the diameter of the input and output they look pretty close to the same diameter so flow rates will be similar. My thinking is if its a bell siphon drain it will suck that nutrient out and drain much faster giving the roots more exposure to oxygen? Just an idea, I know its running on a timer so regardless roots will get plenty of oxygen :). Those root systems look solid 💪 Either way love the idea mate you're a legend and love the time lapse stuff 👍. Keep doing what you do.

I dont think a siphon is a good idea, it will leave water in the system if the pump shuts down at the wrong moment, like water at 80%, siphon trigger will be 95%. You still need the reflow through the pump to clear the rest.

all you need is for the overflow to be a size up from the pump hose so it never backs up

How do you decide which plants grow best in which system? I have an NFT for Greens and a rggs for fruiting. Considering adding one of these to sit on top of the IBC for the NFT which could connect to either res (NFT or rggs).

Great video. But I am curious if any Ozies can answer. He mentions toilet seals. Surely those are not seals for the exit flue on the bottom? (We Yanks use a wax ring.) So exactly what are they sealing?

im running a 3x6 ebb and flow table indoors...ive used 4 inch rockwool on a bed of hydroton for years....is there a better way? i cover the top with white and black poly and put the larger cubes underneath and cut Xs where the rapid rooters socket in..it has reduced water usage and totally eliminated gnats and algae..this one change has made using beneficial bacteria possible without it getting super gross.

Just a friendly tip McMaster car gives 3d models of most ot their products that you can import directly into fusion 360. I had to use this because you can't draw a NPT thread on fusion I simply used the McMaster model just for threads. I've used it on their 3/8 NPT sprayer in my cloner. 9$ a peice in brass 10¢ of petg. 😁

FYI, if the filament estimate is lower than in reality, that could be because your printer's printing too fast or the temperature's too low for it to fully extrude. Nothing wrong with that as long as you're happy with your part, but something to keep in mind in case you ever have issues with weak prints or what not.

Hoocho, perhaps try shifting the seals to the underside of the kiddie pool. If the outside bottom surface of the kiddie pool is smooth, you could well stop the leaks. Tighten the nuts a quarter turn using an adjustable spanner.

While buying a bunnings basket from a tip shop is not theft, it is probably still receiving stolen property because you know no one bought that from the hardware.
@Hoocho
@Hoocho 2 жыл бұрын
There’s major stress marks on the basket that look pretty horrific, you can see them in the video, my guess is that Bunnings was thinning out their damaged baskets and the tip shop salvaged them.

I’ll politely disagree. If the tomatoes he originally had went full term, nearly every inch of that bed would be full of roots. Also, you can’t waste hydroton… it’s reusable.
@andreamitchell4758
@andreamitchell4758 2 жыл бұрын
@@herban_garden yes I know it is reusable but it could be put to better use I think so what is the downside to having the roots in the bed in a ebb and flow system? is that bad if so why is it bad and would it help if the top was covered up with a sheet styrofoam of maybe some plastic and mylar? is it a danger of the roots getting too dry? I think that them getting all that light is not good though
@kayaddicted
@kayaddicted Жыл бұрын
I know this video is a bit older but I've seen you struggle on pronouncing imperial measurements a couple times now. The way us backwards American's would say it is "One and three eighths inches". So the whole number followed by "and" followed by the fractional. If the measurement was longer we would say something like "three feet, five and three quarter inches"
