3rd Grade Literature Homeschool Curriculum
Mosdos Press Opal is included in our 3rd Grade Nonreligious Curriculum Kit from Timberdoodle. Our experience in the past has been with All About Reading, Mosdos is quite different. Please leave me a comment if you would like me to go over comparing the 2. I have the 2nd grade level All About Reading and the 3rd-grade level Mosdos. This video just lets you know how we use this curriculum. We are in our 4th week of schooling and have settled on a pretty good routine. The curriculum itself seems very overwhelming at first and I could find no good information on how to actually use it. I figure other parents probably have these same concerns and questions. Follow along as I share. Mosdos Press Opal is a secular or nonreligious literature-based language arts program.

I cannot thank you enough for posting all of these videos breaking down each subject .... I’m a first time homeschooling mom to my 3rd grader. I went with the same exact curriculum as you (thanks to your prior videos) and I’m a nervous wreck about it but these videos are helping me SO much. Thank you thank you thank you !!!

I just could not find anything about how to use this. It seems like so much but it really does flow nicely and easily. We switched from All About Reading which has neatly labeled lessons. This was just so much harder to understand how to use without diving in. I figured that if I was confused and unprepared, surely others were as well. I'm so glad you found it helpful!

I would love a comparison between this and AAR! We do Timberdoodle as well and will be using the 3rd grade kit next year. Trying to decide if I should continue with AAR4 or move to Mosdos.

We did the same thing, going from 2nd AAR 3 to Mosdos Opal. I have no experience with AAR 4, I think I might get it with my second kiddo since she is ahead an AAR level as of now. We came to Timberdoodle in 2nd grade and so AAR level 3 was our first experience with it. I can tell you that we enjoy Opal. My daughter was reading very well by the end of AAR 3 and I feel like the more literature and vocabulary based Opal came at just the right point for her. She is reading Harry Potter books and longer chapter books now with no problems. I love the fun hands-on approach of AAR but I do think she was ready for the increase in story length, and workbook work that came with Opal. We use what suits us and don't stress about the rest. The teacher's guide can be genuinely terrifying if you are looking at it as we need to do it all. You don't! I also appreciate the introduction that comes in 3rd grade to First Language Lessons for Grammar. Opal includes the different literary element focuses as well. I think maybe the basis of having Opal going forward is more beneficial than finishing through AAR level 4. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your videos! New homeschooler here and starting tomorrow and I feel like I’m still confused about what I’m doing, HA! My son is also in 3rd grade. We also got the Elite Timberdoodle kit. How are you doing this in conjunction with First Language Lessons? I’d love to hear. Keep up all the great work.

So glad these videos are helpful to you. I have been using first language lessons 3 lessons a week. They're basically a script you read from as your kiddo follows along in the workbook. It is stand alone from the Opal. Both Opal and first language lessons seemed pretty intimidating at first but they really do go pretty quickly once you're using them. First language lessons can seem pretty mundane because of the repetition but my daughter is retaining it well so I can't argue with the method.

Thank you for this! Do you use the Teacher Guide much? It's so overwhelming to me. I'm not sure when or how many of the questions I should be asking. What's the most valuable post of the TE to you.
@MakingEverydayMagic

I use it to provide her with the vocabulary, to follow along, and I will choose just a few questions to ask to her to be sure she is comprehending what we are reading. The teacher's guide has so much information, I can't imagine trying to use it all. I will pick and choose, usually about once per page to be sure she understands what is happening. If she does understand, we love on. If not, we discuss further. I am thankful for the amount of information provided in the teacher's guide but as of yet, I don't feel like we have needed even 25% of it. I try to treat curriculum as a tool to be used as needed. The info is there, if needed.

So I was just looking through timberdoodle kits to get ideas for enrichment and saw this for 3rd grade. My daughter is 2nd/3rd and we are finished with AAR4 this year and hoping to move on to a solid LA curriculum for next year- but also I don't want to heap on a lot of work. We are in the middle between unschooling and rigorous. We need a writing and grammar course too so I am starting to feel like it is snowballing. What say you? LOL

Mosdos was very easy to use. It checks the boxes. For your style, you may appreciate more of a literature study that has you reading classic lit for your base and expanding from there. The only other course I have personal experience with is Michael Clay Thompson. There is also Lightning Literature that could be worth a look.

Yes, I've got my eye on Lithouse- which is more unit study like. I may look at this again next year. Don't want to stress either of us

I noticed that there is a All about reading level 4 book but Timberdoodle skipped it and added this into the set. What are your thoughts on that? Do you think it was a good move or should we finish out with the 4th book? We have loved all about reading but also don't mind switching if this is what my son's focus should be on.

My oldest went to Mosdos. For my youngest, we are doing AAR 4 this coming year. I don't intend to do Mosdos with her. My oldest did 2 years of it. No real complaints at all. It's easy to use but just didn't love it. 🤷‍♀️

Did you like Mosdos enough to continue it the next year(s)? I know each child is different. I have one on a different learning method than the other. Also, did you ever incorporate the test CD? (I see they are pdfs to print.)

@@MakingEverydayMagic At least now, they have a CD-ROM that has tests and review sheets for the lessons. I found the teacher and hardback books for free, so I am deciding what I want to do as I am switching from another curriculum and feeling lost. I appreciate your posts and response.

I honestly did know they existed. Mosdos really is great and we have enjoyed using it. I love the ease of use. The teachers guide makes it seem overwhelming but really it is easy to use. We have just decided to go another route. Not at all to fault Mosdos.

@MakingEverydayMagic
@MakingEverydayMagic Жыл бұрын
No, I believe they start at 3rd grade because they're a literature study. Essentially, it's the study of what you're reading and not the study of learning how to read. Granted, grade levels don't really equate the same way in homeschool. If you have a proficient reader, you could easily start them on a literature study before 3rd.

I see you have a seperate spelling and grammar, so is this just literature and composition? And not a full LA curriculum??
@MakingEverydayMagic

We use Spelling U See for spelling, First Language Lessons for Grammar. Mosdos Opal is a literature curriculum focusing on reading, writing, and comprehension. Each lesson has vocabulary words, a graphic organizer, and a writing prompt while focusing on different story elements like setting, theme, characters. Mosdos Opal is a piece of our Language Arts.

@@MakingEverydayMagic this answered my question as well! I wasn’t seeing much grammar or composition. The Essentials in Writing group recommended Mosdos to me today because EIN covers grammar and writing. I can see the two programs working really well together!!
