You inspired me! I picked up a singer sewing machine at Goodwill a week ago for $26. watched your vids and tapered my work denim pants last night. the price for accessories and machine were covered for the first time I used it.middle-aged big man getting it done. Thanks!! and yes I'm going to tailor everything down to my socks!!!

One of the things that really helped me up my game once I started sewing regularly was a walking foot. It helps a lot with heavy fabrics like denim, slippery fabrics like workout fabrics, and knits. The foot interlocks with the feed dogs (the thing that guides the fabric through the machine as you sew) so that it stays really even, and both parts that your sewing stay together. They're between 10$ and 15$, and was a huge game changer.

Walking foots are definitely amazing, I'll be sure to include them in part two!

Invested in an old Husqvarna sewing machine, and currently well along in my binge. Here's what I've discovered. 1. Don't overdo it. It's better to do your alterations incrementally. Unpicking a seam is a pain, and fraught with risk. 2. Learn to self pin. Use COIL-LESS safety pins so fabric doesn't get trapped in the coil. Just gathering fabric round the back by hand puts your arms in an unnatural position, and only lets you view your garment in a static position. 3. Don't be afraid to revisit a project. If you notice after a few weeks there's a little bit of tightness, or baggy fabric, a slim dart, or letting out can improve things no end. Assuming of course you left a generous seam allowance. Which leads me to point ... 4. Don't make your final cut/edging until you've worn/washed the garment a couple of times. Nothing is irreversible until you do, and when you do, leave a generous seam allowance, so that you could encroach into it at a later date. love your content man, Greets from England

I've been using an old letter opener as seam ripper.
@bagery
@bagery 5 жыл бұрын
In my class, they told us to replace the seam ripper often. Do you agree with this? I've had the same one for a few years since then but I don't sew enough to need them a lot. Also, how often or what kinds of jobs do you use your pinking shears for vs going for zig zag? I have a set but never used them on clothes.
@MeepMeep88
@MeepMeep88 5 жыл бұрын
Lol I use a huge ass 17" framing square. It's nice because it's heavy and keeps the clothes in place at the same time it goes across the entire garment. ALong with a fabric tape measure and a tiny 5" ruler. I'd also encourage people to buy a magnet a little larger than a quarter to pick up the pins faster. Just one swipe and you can pick up all 100 pins instantly lol
@StylishDTailors

I make custom window treatments, and now want to learn custom tailoring. I have two industrial sewing machines, but I'm wondering if I will need a free arm walking foot sewing machine for when sewing sleeves on shirt or suit sleeves? I also have a baby lock serger, but I'm not sure if this is heavy duty enough when sewing heavier materials. Should I invest in a commercial serger?

Good point, I've mentioned before that the skills of a tailor and a seamstress are HORRIBLY underrated. Making your clothes fit better? Easy. Mastering the skills of a true tailor? Nearly impossible. And from the other side of the pond in MN I say thank you! I've you're ever thinking of vacationing here don't, it's like Canada with more patriotism.
