How do you choose what fingering position you're going use when you're faced with a brand new song?
If you simply gravitate down to the first 5 frets you're missing out on some seriously cool opportunities. To 'really' learn the fingerboard there's more to it!
In the new lesson I've just released I'm going to share 4 hacks that'll help you choose the correct fingering position...
In this lesson you're going to learn:
- Why the key centre of a song can be used to find the correct fingerboard position
- Why I use the 2nd finger major scale position as 'home base' - and the other 2 positions you should know!)
- How to understand the chord functions within the 2nd finger major scale position - and why it's so important to know them).
- And much more...

This one has simply blowed my mind out. In just 15 minutes this lesson has made me realise how to connect all my knowledge about chords, scales and arpeggio, thus resulting in my biggest "A HA, SO THIS IS HOW IT WORKS" in all my years of playing. Thank you so much from a bass player from Murcia, Spain!

Music theory is huge in your first point. Everyone seems to dislike learning theory, but it's so crucial to being an effective musician.

Scott, your lessons are great... but flipping us that 'second finger' position @5:54 made for a great screenshot! As a bassist, I can can relate to that attitude at certain times... Cheers!

everytime I watch one of your videos, I can't help but notice that you have a quirk for playing fills and lines that don't necessarily end on the strong beats. Very Anthony Jackson-style, may I say. Thanks for the quality content, as always :)

hey Scott, thankful fan from Italy here :) i have a small question: i own a six string bass and i often find myself struggling with playing from the first to the sixth string while maintaining the same volume. usually when i play i like to scoop up the bass and the low mids and that makes my low strings play way louder than the higher strings. i know there are bass compressors but i feel like its like cheating and not really gettin better at the instrument do you have any suggestions? maybe some erxercise to play lighter/stronger without really focusing on that? keep up the good work cheers :)

For me, I mainly just need to know what key it's in....I'm still learning the fingerboard, and overall semi noob BUT I can hack it if I know what key we're in. It's weird, tho, if I have to figure out the key on my own, I have a really hard time mapping from the point where I found it....which I guess goes back to still learning the finger board.

@Andrew Marks: I am a beginner and I've been advised at music shops that music theory classes should be taken before picking up an instrument. Why is that? Will you explain that to me thoroughly?

If you don't know music theory, then it'll be hard to learn an instrument, cause you don't know how and why it works. We learn instrument to play music, that's why we learn music theory, to understand how music works My advise is forget that music theory class, just read a free basic music theory book or articles or watch some basic music theory videos on youtube and you're good to go. It only take 2 to 4 weeks to understand basic music theory.
