I have an All American Sharpener. When I start grinding on a blade that has previously been sharpened by hand by someone else, the angle has always been more than 30 degrees (I've seen some that looked like they were 60 degrees), so I run into the exact situation you described - the grinder starts removing metal from the trailing edge first (what you called the bevel/shoulder), and the leading edge (cutting edge) remains dull. This is how I look at it: presumably the people who bring me blades are going to bring them to me again in the future, so instead of me always having to adjust the jig angle to match the blade, I just set it at 30 degrees and grind away until the blade has a 30 degree angle on it. I just did it yesterday in fact. It adds some time to the process, but it's not excessive. When I sharpen that blade again in the future, the entire face of the edge will be shiny after 1 pass, and be sharp in 15 seconds or less. When I'm sharpening a blade that I've sharpened before, I spend more time loosening & tightening the jaws and flipping the blade around than I do sharpening the edge.

I found that using a hard wheel to return the angle to original is much faster than a flap disc. It only takes 2 or 3 quick and light passes. If the angle is already close then I use a flap disc.

This is the one tool where I only use twice a year and feel good about spending the money on! My gator blades are razor sharp and my grass is looking better than ever! Thanks for the tips and tricks I also realized that since I mount it directly to the bench vice I sharpen the blade on the down side while yours is in the up side 😅

Great tips. I need to try the narrow blade trick and the handle jig. Thanks, Matt!

I just sw this video. As far as centering the wheel on the edge, I used small washers on the pin to push the grinder to the left. You can use multiple washers to get any distance you want.

I see you have your sharpener attached to a small portable table. I would appreciate 8:25 your thoughts on whether a portable table made of plastic and metal, specifically the WORX WX051 Pegasus Folding Work Table & Sawhorse, would work? Not sure if it woukd be stable enough but watching your video gave me the idea of using it. Really enjoy your videos! Thank you

Have you used different grinding wheels on mower blades and found one that seems to be the best? I see you are using a flapper wheel on it now. I just ordered the all American and don’t have it yet but trying to get ready for it.

Congrats on your new tool. Yes, I still prefer a 40 grit flap disc in ceramic or zirconia.

Does the angle change as the grinding wheel wears down? It certainly changes with A Oregon 88-025.

As long as you line up the blade with the centerline of the disc, no. That adjustment is easy to make on the All American.
