4 STEPS For Painting BEAUTIFUL TREES

When I think about painting realistic trees or detailed trees, I've come to think about it in four steps. I work within each step very meticulously before moving to what I consider to be the next step. In this video I take you through the process of painting the autumn trees in my newest work.
Two tips I keep in mind before starting is to always work from back to front and ALWAYS be willing to make changes along the way.
Here are the steps:
1) Establish a clear idea - I always make sure that I have worked up every shape/tree together simultaneously to the point where I can visualize how I want it all completed before doing anything else.
2) Establish the color - I then spend a good portion of time adjusting and making changes to the color prior to adding any details.
3) Add detail - After I like the color, I start to separate the areas with a small pointed brush into areas of shadows, highlights, branches, and openings in the leaves/branches.
4) Show the light - Whether the tree is backlit or lit from the front, I add the brightest highlights last to each and every little area I see fitting.
The brushes I used for these trees -
Flat brush: shrsl.com/1qg2e
Filbert brush: shrsl.com/1qg27
Round brush: shrsl.com/1qg23

Got to say I'm trying your how to paint a landscape 4 part video and yeah it's taking me some time using this type of method but it works better for me . I like to take my time . Yeah you have your simple methods to try and portray realism with next to no effort but you can't beat actual good old time taking. Which is what you do . Thank you man you got me painting again after about 15 years not painting!

Many thanks Chuck for sharing your ideas and talent with us. You are an inspiration and your tutorials are very thorough. I particularly like the way you take time and effort to describe exactly what you are doing at each step. Thank you so much, I have been painting on and off for almost 50 years (I'm 75) and I have learned more from you than from any other source in my painting life. Thank you.

I absolutely loved your demo especially because you showed the times you had to re-do parts. Being new to painting I always get so frustrated with myself when I realize I failed to consider the light or the background etc. It was so refreshing to see a talented artist like you have to go back and fix things. That alone made the video great but your tips are also invaluable. Thanks.

Hello Chuck: I stopped painting in 1989; however, I am planning on painting again this Fall of 2019. I enjoyed the work you did on the Painting Tips for Trees. In particular, I noticed how you painted a three stroke leaf in the foreground. The addition of Sky Color into the trees was very interesting and informative for me also. Anyway, thank you for your KZfaq presentations. Sincerely... J. Hugh Craft

Thanks again. My current work is dense with trees and seeing the repetitive brushwork gave me the boost I needed to get going. Your long sentence about the function of letting light through and highlighting the leaves on the far side of the tree is a classic “Chuck Black” teaching hallmark...yes, you’re a character! I really like learning from you; and, seeing your growth professionally as a videographer, and teacher, is rewarding intrinsically. Keep going...we’re right behind you!

so lovely and I love the detail...the light(sky) peaking through the trees is sheer perfection(or close as we can get to it!)..I am inspired to pick up my paint brushes and do some landscapes...a bit tired of all the florals I have done for 20 years...TY for sharing and teaching...GBY!!! BTW...how can anyone give a thumbs down to such talent&effort?! It's just mean&petty...just trolls being immature&hateful (totally moronic but mostly just shameful on their part!).
