Proud lumix s5ii owner here: The difference between shooting something for a movie and shooting something else is that movies have more than just the camera involved. Art direction, lighting, actors, plot, etc. that all being said, for solo creators/filmmakers the s5ii/x is a dream come true.

@CartyCantDance
@CartyCantDance 7 ай бұрын
@@Kevlexicon use synchro scan for the light flicker. Different Hz rate in lights to your frame rate/shutter speed. For moire I use a moment cinebloom at 10%, but any light diffusion will basically act as a OLPF or anti aliasing filter. If something is showing as too much moire, then you need to change the angle of light and maybe your lens as well

Wow, I thought A was the sharper image, better colour science, better highlights. I assumed it was the Arri. That's wild
@sludgybeast
@sludgybeast 7 ай бұрын
That crazy since the highlights are worse, the colors are inaccurate-shifting to teal instead of remaining blue in the sky, brown of bark shifting green and a natural color saturation boost. Sharpness isn't a camera feature past resolution options- the focus is just on a different mark. Try seeing how much you can actually push the grade, DR, and colors in post rather than a stock rec 709 + filmic lut. Its wild that people think think this stacks at all against the Arri. All well, feel free to shoot with your films with the lumix.

@sludgybeast Looking at the video on my phone, and a 2nd time, there's definitely more flaws you do notice. But it's not night and day as you suggest. Regarding focus, if it's not sensor related kinda weird that they missed focus so much with the Arri? Anyway, I posted my initial reaction because on first glance I preferred the Lumix footage. It may well be different watching it on an IMAX screen, but on my laptop that was my initial feeling. Arri fan boys might get hurt feelings, but the gap has closed and if you have to pixel peep then that says it all

My favorite video of yours so far. The high end cameras truly are just sports cars at this point. Gareth Edwards filming the creator on the fx3 is another major example of how lenses are now king to all the sensors we have access too. He filmed with the kowa 75mm and used the prototype atlas mercury 42 sprinkled as well.

I knew A would be the lumix, the IBIS warp is very apparent when you're moving, at first I thought it was opposite but after 2-3 shots in I could tell. I'd say if lumix just dialed in their settings for anamorphic, they'd have something wayyyy killer.

What is interesting is that with "Emotive Color" LUTs for the S5II/IIX, you can ensure your color graded footage can be interleaved with ARRI Alexa footage, so the S5 series can be used as B cameras along with the ARRI for those wanting multiple camera shots without having to redo the scene for a single ARRI Alexa. Now I don't have the newer S5II/IIX, but continue to use my S5 OG. Like the ARRI, I use MF Cine and Anamorphic lenses and use 5.9K RAW via HDMI to my Atomos Ninja V and Atomos Connect, which provides me Camera-to-Cloud features beyond Lumix's latest firmware upgrade.

While B overall is the better image (on most shots) due to increased dynamic range and highlights that bloom less, the difference is honestly negligible. You could very much so film a $200,000,000 budget movie on either camera and get a great look. The biggest differences are much more so going to come down to set quality, location, lighting, sound, technical talent, acting, etc. We are lucky as filmmakers to be in an era where finally good cameras are accessible at a great price.

thanks for the comp. Really interesting. It was quite obvious though, seeing the warb in the S5IX stabilisation and the less dynamic range (also the Lumix seems to be sharper). Still very very proud of Lumix, being this close. You probably shouldn't have used IS to make the comp even more similar. I do prefer GH6 with anamorphic because then you can use open gate 4:3 instead of 3:2 ...3:2 combined with 1.6x ana is personally a bit to tight.

My use case is video only and im currently focused on realestate videos and some weddings, client work ect. My main concern is for filming real estate in 4k60. What would look better a7siii 4k60 or the lumix s5ii 4k60 cropped? Most high end videographers in the real estate industry use a7siii. Taking everything into account, noise, low light, Dynamic range, image quality ect which is better. My goal to get the best quality for 4k 60 video. Thank you

I was able to figure out which was which, but not by color. The giveaway was IBIS artifacts that were visible on one of the longer shots. Either it was stabilization, or rolling shutter that gave it away. As for color, they were so closely matched, I couldn't get insight on which was which.

The Lumix looks great, but I guessed it right! You could see better dynamic range in the highlights, or is it the highlight rolloff on the Alexa. Also, for some reason there was some stabilizer wobble in some of the Lumix shots, while the Alexa of course looks like no stabilization was done. Colors are very similar, but a bit better on the skintone with the Alexa. The Alexa is hella old at this point, so I'm glad to see cheaper cams matching and beating it in some respects! The biggest "giveaway" was the highlight detail on the white house siding in the second shot, which is why I guessed that B was the Alexa. Dynamic range on B seemed better in most of the beginning shots, but there were a few later shots where the sky seemed clipped on both - maybe due to the grading and KZfaq compression. Not sure. Greens in grass also seemed slightly more natural for B in the rolling hills shot, which was another reason I thought it might be the Alexa. Cool to see just how well the Lumix held up and could be matched pretty close.
@FlyingJackalope
@FlyingJackalope 6 ай бұрын
Lot more detail in the shadows and less contrasty on B. More bokeh and swirl on B as well but that may have been aided by the difference in focal length. Oddly, B felt more like full frame than A. B had a lot more DOF than A. A is still totally usable but might require a couple of things to make it feel more like B. Probably if you were not shooting in crop mode and open gate it might feel closer, but the dynamic range difference was definitely noticeable.

The image quality in the comparison is pretty similar, but what gives it away are the artifacts in the angles produced by the stabilization in the lumix. It can clearly be seen that the image bends in weird ways when the camera is not fixed. Would be interesting a comparison without the stabilization. Also, the dynamic range is clearly different in some high contrast scenes, and it also helps to understand wich one is wich to a degree, but probably only because I've worked a lot with Arri cameras

I could tell immediately on my Samsung Ark, but on anything less it would be very difficult to see the difference. The dead give aways were the over sharpening of the S5X, and the warping on the edges of the frame from the IBIS. The thing with Arri I believe is their OLPF. Their footage is just "smooth" but detailed is the only way to describe it. This is a macro level observations though on a 55 inch massive curved monitor maybe 2 arms length from my face haha. Point is - on a lesser screen, or even the footage being independent, it doesn't matter really (i.e. the FX3 used on the Creator). Nice video!

I was SURE that the "A" footage was the Arri, and was starting to feel a little sad that I couldn't pop for the expensive Arri - Thanks for making it easier for me to convince myself that it was actually a smart move to buy the S5IIX (even though it was really too expensive for my skill level).

I couldnt tell the difference from image quality/colours, but I can definitely see that B is much more shakier than A.

Was hard to see but theres a slight warmer tone in the skintones on the alexa. Thats the signature of Arri.

I figured B was the Arri. Not because of any talent or experience. But this is what stood out to me. Camera B had a more "natural" look. The colours also looked more natural, the greens were deeper and subtle, where as camera A looked oversaturated and almost cartoony. The very noticeable thing to me was the highlights. The dynamic range just seemed superior in image B. There looked like a loss of image in the skies for camera A, whereas B seemed to have a better roll-off and delineation between sky and cloud. You can capture beautiful images with both of these cameras.

on a new MacBook Pro, I cant see the differences. They both look like shot on a cinema cam.

It was pretty obvious that Camera A was the Lumix because I could see the warping from the image stabilization. I thought the skin tones looked better on the Arri, which is typical. Even though I shoot with mostly Panasonic cameras, I wish their skin tones were better. I much prefer Olympus's color science, but the video options on Olympus cameras just don't cut it.

Wow, yep. I totally thought Camera A was the Alexa. Nice. Although, both were hindered by grading in premiere. Premiere seriously destroys your footage... everything has that 8-bit-tinge to it. It just doesn't dig into the full-range of the colors/DR like Resolve does.

It's not just the image or color that determines the price difference . One has arriraw, the other doesn't, one is built to have onboard 12/24v power (lemo), sdi ports, timecode, robust body that can be used and abused on many productions... ECT ecr

Liked a more on colors and total look. But b was a little less sharp so that should be the Arri

i guess right, mostly because of the dr. but the difference is small, and you can use filter and or lighting to match the dr.

I thought camera a was Alexa cuz it was tad bit less sharp than camera b but it looked better looked more cinematic and camera b looked more sharper making me associate that with latest and greatest mirrorless cameras

Can tell the arri was b based on sharpness. The Arri is more natural the mirrorless cameras. Every test ive seen that involves a Arri and mirrorless camera the mirrorless is always sharper. The reason you pick a arri over any other camera is the look you get without effort. I own a bunch of cameras but that Arri is buttery.

Very good.. graded so closely. I guessed camera A for s5iix. But not because of a quality difference. I just noticed that slight wobble in the corners on one of two shots. It's the same wobble I see on my s5iix.... But it was super minor and my guess wasn't 100% confident 😂😂😂.. great comparison 👏👏

they both produce very clean images but the stabilization gave it away. Im sure KZfaqs compression and us viewers watching it on phones and monitors doesnt help the actual result but looks good enough for social media and youtube.

For me the IBIS could tell which one was which... rist I thought the B is the Lumix, cause it was sharper, then realized the shake so I was like there is no IBIS in camera B so that is the ARRI.

Camjera A was obviously the Lumix, because of the stabilization more than anything. For some shots I liked the colour and highlights of camera A better, in others I liked camera B better. Goes to how, camera choice is very close to becoming irrelevant. Get good glass. Rent it if you have to for now. The glass is the key.

i prefered "B" because the subject popped and it looked more 3d. "A" had a flat boring image and the subject blended too much into the background. but i thought A was arri because for some reason i thought big cameras tend to have boring image. well i was surprised, B arri looked great. A was fine, im sure it can be graded to match.

my thoughts are; because of the image stabilization on the Lumix, the Alexa is different. I dont think real cinematographers ever use optic image stabilization cause it looks wrong.
