This 2007 Toyota Rav4 V6 can still leave most cars in the dust, even at 427k MILES!
However it is losing power under medium load and setting a P0171 - Bank 1 LEAN code.
Parts Cannon has been fired a bit: plugs, coils, MAF.

I appreciate you WRITING DOWN findings. As troubleshooting progresses one might FORGET previous findings and this leads to "getting wrapped around the axles." Good job Ivan! Your customers must love you!

I once cleared out my injectors with methylated spirits under oressure (using a syringe) while applying 12V to actuate them, outside vehicle. You would be amazed at the carbon came out, since then they sprayed correctly. Must admit your injector drop test is awesome!

This is why I dump a couple bottles of Gumout for high mileage engines with PEA in my vehicles gas tanks periodically. I also dump it in my motorcycles, boat motor, and all my gas powered lawn tools. It helps keep the carbs and injectors clean. It cleared up a miss in my boat motor and my lawn tools start much quicker.

Same here, except I use Chevron Techron. I've been using it since the late 90s in every car I've owned, every 3000-5000 miles. Never had an issue with injectors, even with my old 278,000 mile Honda.

@@djosbun: i had one V6 Windstar work van with 412, 000 miles, and another with 350,000 miles... NEVER an injector problem. Life-long diet of Chevron fuel religiously.

My car is 17 years old dose not even have 200k on it yet one day I went to Walmart wasn’t even gone 30 minutes when I got back coolant temp was still reading warm. When I went to start all I got was crank , crank , crank for like 15 seconds still not start. Then I couldn’t not hear fuel pump prime so I switched some relays around I don’t know I was just trying anything. Then I got fuel pump back I could hear it again. Tried starting again crank , crank , crank vroom it start really rough idle was like 400 rpms the thing was about to die so I hit the accelerator and it smoothed out at 2000 rpms held it at 2500 rpms then brought it down slow and the idle fixed itself it was running really good now. Strangest thing ever I’m think some of the injectors might have been partly blocked and when I revel it up fuel pressure blew out whatever might been stuck. It was not misfiring cause check engine light would flash instantly but it was almost like it was too lean. Wish a had my scan tool with me but I didn’t at that time. Plus I know fuel pumps good cause I can give hit the car hard up hills now problem.

Ivan you have an excellent diagnostic approach and no part repair strategy. I am not a mechanic, but I am here to learn the wonderful world of modern car diagnostics. It will greatly help if you spend a couple of minutes explaining what the numbers really mean in a data stream, like fuel trim percentages and lambda, now I need to go watch some video about fuel trims and lambda numbers.

For cleaning injectors I utilize return-less fuel rail from Volvo 2.4 5 cylinder, fuel line, and fuel pump.I make a solution of BG platinum 44K,sea foam,G.M upper cylinder cleaner . Works great as it should

Had a similar issue with my Dodge D150 with a TB 360. Ran fine for 15-20 minutes, then would starve for fuel. Hooked up an inline pressure gauge. The fuel pump would conk out within that period of time. Replaced the pump. All was good!

I love the injector drop test. Once had a Corolla with 299,999 on the clock… who knows how long since it “exceeded the mechanical limits”. Lol The lean code was remedied with an on car injector flush. The drop numbers nearly doubled from 9 psi to 15 psi. Great test. I love how you use the cars 12v and only use the negative lead to pulse them via backprobe, that’s clever. I guess with your universal banana Jack you could create and setup you liked with adapters too. Great job, keep it up…. Best crazy shirtless Russian/American mechanic on “The KZfaq”

a tip Evan. for the fuel pressure tester line the plastic housing that house the fuel connection on the car can be used to hold the S&R line. it won't clip in since t is long like you mentioned but the plastic lock box will hold it just fine.

Everyone has their favorite fuel system cleaner. Mine is Berrymans B12. I have seen it work within a few miles numerous times. Its a really strong cleaner.

Excellent who done it video. Interesting the lean code is only on one bank if it’s a fuel pump. I’m early in the video but It would have me looking at bad or plugged fuel injectors. Looks like I might be right, your a good teacher.

I’ve had this problem before! Because the car was drive-able, I gave it prescription strength medication of double the recommended dose of fuel injector cleaner in the tank with every fill-up. It was back to smooth, strong running after about 2 weeks.

Not sure if a injector clean would have worked but still close to my guess. I would trace down why so much pressure is being lost. Just me. Lol. Good job man.

Only issue I've had with my Toyota 4runner was cheap aftermarket fuel injectors. I was fighting with a lean condition under load and rich at idle. A quality rebuilt matched set fixed it all.

Ivan, congrats on another great diagnosis. But a world away, there are some dudes who could really use your help. Unfortunately, there's no OBD II on Kreosan's Zaporozhets. The Kreosan team are in way over their heads. You and maybe your dad could help get them back on the road to Chernobyl.

I don't have nearly the skill you have for diagnosis. I fixed my 171 code in my corolla with the parts cannon. I had to fire it a few times but got it sorted eventually. Parts cannon cheaper than taking it to the shop most of the time but it's a gamble.

Great diagnostic approach! Would it be worth to replace the injector filter baskets/o rings and do the injector cleaning procedure before purchasing new ones? Can’t wait for the part 2.

Maybe on a lower mileage car, but at 400,000+, it's earned a new set. Also, since he charges for labor, it may not save the customer any money. A DIY could have a different $ decision point.

Interesting problem and diag. I once had a 2001 Nissan Micra which had a System Too Lean code and the shop just cleared the codes and was guessing that if the code comes back, maybe either one of the O2 sensors is bad. The code came back, but then I just solved it with the most expensive way to fire the parts cannon, replaced the whole car xD Thinking about it now, would've been good learning experience to try and fix the Micra, but didn't know any good shops that would do proper diagnose, and not just guessing & firing the random parts cannon :D Didn't have experience or tools to do much myself to it either. Now watching this Toyota diag, maybe my Micra had leaky injectors too, or failing fuel pump, leaking intake manifold gasket, or whatever, who knows.

Those Micras from that era were pretty solid cars. Nissan built them quick and built them cheap, they were a dated car by the time they started production which was why they could be made cheap and were relatively reliable. My mum dad a 1996 Micra which she got rid of in 2007 - came to find out years later it had its last MOT in 2018 at 170,000 miles. Sounds like the rust got it looking at its last MOT.

The scanner shows 265,294 miles. Roughly equal to 426,930 Kilometers depending on how you do your rounding... 426,930 x .62137119224 = 265,282 miles. Perhaps the odometer is set in Kilometers?

@@hamercommaphilip, I think the scanner "scans" (i.e. reads what's in the ECU). My odometer has an analog display with the primary ring in MPH. I can change my odometer distance displayed from miles to kilometers at the touch of a button and like the odometer here, it does not indicate a unit of measure on the odometer face. If the scanner was reading 426k Miles the Kilometer Conversion would be 685k Kilometers. If the scanner is reading 426k Kilometers then the conversion to 265k Miles is correct. I don't think the scanner is doing any conversion. I think since the speedometer's primary ring is MPH, the E-PROM on the cluster PCB is recording in miles and the odometer is converting to kilometers for display because it's been selected. That seems more likely than the scanner making a massive error and simply displaying 426k Miles as 265k Miles.

@@OtisPlunk wouldn't be a massive error. All it would take is the scanner would always display miles, so it has simple code that says, if I read km then convert it to miles before displaying. The bug here would be the scanner reads 426K and thinks it's reading kilometers, so it "converts" this to miles and displays it.

05 camry her 245k same code. scanner showed air fuel sensor aka oxygen sensor 1 in the manifold. the voltage was 1-4 volts replaced the sensor for a whopping $165 denso of course.

I hope you show fuel pressure and see if new injectors fix the pressure decay, I bet it will but if not it could be another issue that may or may not need addressed but if not addressed may lead to hard or extended starts.

Great work yet again. Does the cleaning test for injectors work when you disconnect fuel and connect a few tin off cleaner as seen on the youtube. Before replacing or ecen taking out and try cleaning one at a time . Just wondering as i dont have alot of money.

Is the fuel pressure supposed to decay that fast? If he has restricted injectors I wonder if the reg in the fuel sender isn't working properly because its gummed up? When you start it it almost sounds as if its "coughing" a bit when it starts like it has a fuel delivery issue. Great case study Ivan. A 1.3 Toyota Yaris my brother in law uses as a delivery vehicle has a "hard starting" issue I very much suspect to be fuel related. It's done 340,000 miles in 14 years. No codes. I'm going to carry out some tests very similar to yours when I visit next.

Not if you do it right :) As long as the engine isn't turning, those drivers are OFF so it's a safe procedure.

Really nice video, but I have 2 questions, is this a MPI engine or a GDI ? How does a gloged injector drops the pressure more than a new one who is normally injecting more fuel ? 🤔

With those kinds of miles I tend to be just a little more gentle with vehicles, that aside the owner clearly wants and expects the car to perform, I'm curious about the fast bleed down and wonder if injector cleaner would restore performance, however I suspect you made the right call considering the million plus actuations the injectors have racked up

Ivan you have the same issue on that Toyota as I have on my Honda. None of the fittings in those high priced kits of SUR R fittings fit. Make me one like that one you made up and I’ll purchase it from you or just list the parts you used. The quick connects and the neck on the fuel line don’t match up. It sucks good video though 😊

I would still check for any possible air leaks still or anything like a twisted Camshaft like you & Eric O found in that Hyundai at his workshop, maybe a leaky cylinder head gasket is a possibility ? I know in my Holden Commodore which runs the 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine the P0171 code was caused by something as stupid as a bad fuel pressure regulator but it was accompanied by higher than normal Long term fuel trims on both engine banks,at the moment they're sitting at -0.8% on both engine banks which is very good & with the PR217 fuel pressure regulator fitted inside of the fuel tank !

would only use Denso coils & plugs. cleaning the MAF sensor and throttle body usually do wonders 4 lean codes.

It may have internal limiters on fuel trims based on load (maf > some value means long term fuel trim 5%+-

I had the same code 171 I tested the fuel pump it had the right pressure. I checked the vacum it was steady and strong .New plugs and injectors and coils .changed the intake gasket .it was a 1.8 toyota celica 2001.could not get rid of the 171 code .finally I changed the up stream oxygen sensor. And the code went away .But then it came up with a cylinder # 3 miss .I changed the injector.that fixed the miss fire code and I went to the smog station and it passed.

Did not know that 4 psi really make that much of a difference. Great diagnoise process. Another question is why did the fuel pump drop so fast after you prime the fuel pump? Should it hold pressure?

That's not 4psi when it's running though, that's 4 psi difference left after pulsing the injector without adding more pressure to the fuel behind it. Think of a straw connected to a balloon - if the balloon starts at 40psi, and you open the straw for exactly 1 second, and one goes down to 22psi, and another straw only goes down to 27psi, just think about how much smaller the straw has to be to leave that extra 4 or 5 psi in the balloon. That's a huge difference in flow rate. The real test would be to test the flow rate, but that's much harder to do, so this residual pressure test is the next best thing.

Any chance that odometer is displaying kilometers traveled and not miles? I saw on the scan tool the mileage indicated at around 266k miles, which would be about 427k kilometers.

I would get injectors cleaned by a shop that uses BG cleaner run though pressurized. I'm gonna guess the fuel filter in the tank has never been changed also

Hmmm, my spidey senses tell me a customer driving with a broken windshield might not want to pay for repairs, only find out what’s wrong? But, I agree, fuel related. Having lots of fresh parts eliminated them as potential causes. Possibly an exhaust restriction?

Toyota V6 engines for many years only had one oxygen sensor and one air fuel ratio sensor. On the diagnostic tool this will be bank one sensor one for the A/F sensor which is before the catalyst the sensor after the catalyst is an oxygen sensor which will be bank one sensor two.

Only symptoms were some poor acceleration under heavy loads and recurring P0171. And hot restarts became problematic. Start and stall. The kid ran it out of gas a few times so I figured the pump was compromised.

I get this same p0171 code arbitrarily every winter. The pont ‘08 vibe has absolutely no symptoms. Drives like a charm. Goes away in spring. 219k miles on it. WUT DUZ IT MEEN?!😣

Those older v6 rav4’s, I think they had a 14.x 1/4 mile and 0-60 in around 6 seconds, if I remember correctly.

I am on my third set of OEM injectors on my 1984 Nissan Maxima. 428,000 miles so far.

@@luismarty1685 That is correct. I also own a 2002 Maxima with 193,000 and an 2005 Altima 2.5L with 324,000. Yes all so cal cars, and many years of synthetic oil. I would not buy a new Nissan.

Hey man so I have an issue. I have a 93 buck lesabre it stalls whenever you slam on the brake and stomp on the gas and shuts off but will start right up afterwards. If you baby the car it’s completely fine. We’ve replaced the o2 sensor and mass air flow sensor. We are thinking it’s either the fuel injectors or fuel pump. Any idea? Thanks

Why fuel trims did go down at full load, if there was less fuel from restrircted injectors. Would not be opposite if engine starves for fuel. Maybe did go to open loop?

I was surprised that you started with fuel pressure on a V shape engine that has a one bank code.

Could you pop off the fuel injectors, and switch sides see if the code follows it to the other bank?

FYI - Most "strategies" go to open loop when WOT. The fuel is pre-programmed to a fixed amount based on engine speed and load (MAF).

Yea what we call open loop a pre programmed set in the ecm. Closed loop when the computer takes input from all the sensors

I believed that was the case as well. What do fuel trims actually mean then at that point then, since the AFR sensors are no longer being observed? Is it just basing fuel delivery off of the MAF?

@@artemdevo3161 no computer has a set program that pulses the injectors once closed loop happens the computer starts taking data from the maf and o2 sensor so on

from the beginning, i was thinking bad injectors once i seen steady fuel pressure, from watching so many videos, im thinking the "bad" injectors are actually good, and the "good" is actually bad, being the "bad" are all even and dont overflow, the "good" is actually stuck open and overflowing fuel (hence the pressure drop at key off and extended crank time with a bit of stumble that can be hear, as its clearing out fuel and building pressure once again) which the stuck injectors is actually tricking the computer into thinking the other bank is the problem. id be curious to see a flow test/pressure test out of the motor and see the spray and which is actually leaking down. i think if it had 4 clogged injectors, you wouldnt have a "better" time at wide open throttle as it would still be starving for fuel, 2 stuck open injectors would clear up at full throttle as all 6 are now spraying at the same rate/max flow. just my thoughts from so many different channels ive watched (sma, watch wes work, etc)

At what point you decide whether to go with fuel delivery system or restricted exhaust when you see bank to bank trim imbalance and loss of power at WOT loaded conditions? As always great diag process.

Exhaust restriction will typically show rich. O2s read oxygen content only and spent air will show nothing so trims would have gone the opposite direction.

My 2007 Toyota Corolla (167k miles) has same p0171 problem. Took to same shop 3 times this week who can't figure it out and throw on parts I didn't need and hope it fixes it. So annoying, I need this kind of diagnostic test. Looks like I might need all new fuel injectors :(

I take it the ThinkTool doesn't have the injector balance/drop test built in? No special function? That old OTC pulser tool is still so useful!!
