1,600 pointy-roofed houses in southern Italy
Alberobello, a town in the Puglia region of southern Italy, is dotted with 1,600 mushroom-like houses with pointy roofs.
With its whitewashed houses, called trulli, made of piled up limestone, the unusual town looks like a fairyland. The roofs are decorated with variously shaped spires that craftsmen are said to have left behind as signatures, as well as mysterious symbols that may represent primitive beliefs or talismans, further deepening the mystery of this unique town.
Pioneer farmers who moved to Alberobello in the 16th century started to build the trulli. The 1,600 pointy roofs are made of quarried limestone stacked with fortuitous balance, without the use of plaster or other adhesives. The fairy tale town expanded by connecting the roofs.
The mysterious appearance of the town is just like the archetypal image of a fairy tale town that we all keep in our memories, from the picture books of our childhood. Enjoy!
