4th Gen 4Runner - Engine Bay Detail

Today I am going to give my engine bay a deep detail. I’ve taken my 4Runner on many adventures and it has accumulated some dust. Its time for my bi annual engine bay detail. I clean the engine bay twice a year to get off the dust, and to protect the paint and plastic. Since I work on my 4Runner it's nice to keep the engine bay clean and protected.
Steps
- First I cleaned off any debris
- Covered alternator and fuse box with plastic bags
- Soaked the engine bay in Super Clean using a garden pump sprayer
- Foamed with IK Foamer and Brake Buster for longer dwell time
- Used brushes to agitate the dirt and grime
- Rinse and blow dry
- Use Aerospace 303 to protect plastics and rubbers
- Use Bead Maker to protect painted surfaces
- The 4Runner should be good to go for another 6 months until it gets a rinse again.

A clean engine is a happy engine! Thanks to another Ew Toober, I use foamy tire cleaner and an air compressor. The tire cleaner cuts dirt and conditions rubber and vinyl at the same time. On a side note, I can say from personal experience, breaking the thermostat housing on my Tacoma engine and flooding the alternator which sits right below the housing is a bad thing. It shorted out the alternator and because the alternator is connected directly to the battery, well, you can guess what happened to the battery.

i usually clean my engine bay once a year. i work in a dusty environment looks nice .

If you have an open air intake , stuff it with a microfiber towel to keep out the water .

Thanks! It was fine in this situation since the 4Runner stock air intake gets its air from the fender well and not the engine bay.

I cleaned and protected the paint and plastics in the engine bay. I used Aerospace 303 for the plastic protection. Its a much better product than Armor All. amzn.to/3SWZi6P For the paint I used P&S Bead Maker for protection. amzn.to/3IXXbuK

Do people who ride in dust actually put knn filters on? Idiotic move lol. Good way to suck in a bunch ormf dust

It came with the car when I bought it. The 4Runner is mostly a road trip car and I only off road every few months so not a huge deal to clean it once in a while. What kind of filter do you recommend when hitting the trails? OEM? I could just switch it out when I hit the trails.
