Hunters Road solo adventure.
In this second part adventure to the Zimbabwe episode, I travel from Hwange back into Botswana and attempt to do the Old Hunters Road as a solo trip. A nerve racking experience, with some truly unforgettable moments.
The damaged flooring plays havoc, and I get up close and personal with some bad tempered elephants.

As an old Rhodie, I've really enjoyed your videos & they'll be very useful to show my grandson a bit more about my youth which he's interested in. Since arriving in 1948, I lived on my Dad's farm just 5 miles north of Hartley (now Chegutu) where the A5 crosses the Mupfure river. 5 or 6 miles upstream from there was the end of the old Hunters road which if my research is correct was first used by the elephant hunter Henry Hartley whose main base camp was on the banks of the Mfuli (now Mupfure) river. I spent many happy years canoeing/fishing on the river and riding on my horse with 2 large dogs along the Mfuli river in the 50's and early 60's. Note to Ryan, I always wore boots, carried a gun and knew my snakes since a few could kill you in a minute or two though I was quite safe on horseback. I have been a solo overlander for many years and I know very well that feeling of solitude. The longest solo drive was 45 days. That’s really a lot. It’s a bit like shoes that are to small. At the beginning, it hurts a little. In the end, every step is so hard. Do I like solo overlanding ? No. Definitely no. The problem is that I don’t want to wait for people to join me. They usually never come and you end up doing nothing. I’m not the most sociable person but I do enjoy small groups. Remember that we find safety in number. Being alone at night in the bush or in the jungle is harder than people could think. Am I afraid of wild animals ? Not at all. I’m only afraid of humans. I just don’t want to cross the path of the wrong people, that’s for sure. I was attacked 15 or 20 years ago by road pirates. You never forget this kind of experience. So even if I am mainly a solo overlander, I will join a friendly small group whenever I can. Everything is so much more difficult alone especially when you are in trouble (bogged, accident, mechanical failure,…). Finally, I think that I could go crazy or at least become severely depressed if I would not see anyone for too long. I think this is natural and see no reason to admit it and being ashamed.

Hi Blaise, thank you for your in depth comment and insights on this one. Really amazing story about the road pirates, and yes, 45 days is a long one when alone. Yes, being aware of the possibilities that humans can be a big problem in the wild areas is a very very real threat to wild campers and the overlanding community at large. It is a pity that it is this way, and it is something that I am aware of and share your sentiment. I think safety in numbers, for me, is a very real requirement when doing these trips. I agree, most dangerous animals are humans. While I have no "horror story" to share - I second your " I'm only araid of humans". A littel crazy goes a long way....

I have been thinking of solo overlanding cos ya, people never come, but after I read your comment I feel like it will be too much for me, I once had a breakdown between Ghanzi and Ngamiland district, there was no cellphone network, no sign of movement of people, and the only thing that gave me hope was a herd of cattle, when I saw them I thought I was a bit safe because it meant there were few or no lions there, but there were elephants, I was only worried about the ones that can charge and attack for no reason while I was walking for 16km to the nearest village, it was one of the worst experiences I came across, no water, no food and the sun was going down. So maybe I will start with short solo overlanding trips and keep going until I can take long ones, sorry you had to experience that ordeal, people nowdays are predators

@@epicoverlandbw I have a smartphone. You define need some sort of satellite two-way communication. At least a Garmin I teach. Actually I have both. When you travel solo, you easily meet other solo overlanders. Usually we get together and travel for a week or two until we don't have the same goal or direction. But the most important thing, don't let anything or anyone stop you. Go on. Just be prepared. The worse are people who say they will join you and never show up. Waiting for them is a total waste of your life because you cannot rewind your life.

Thanks Ryan for taking us along on your awesome lone adventure show. I could relate the emotions of fearful excitement you had. I once took a lone, rather impromptu trip from Vic Falls on a road that traces the Zambezi, and went southwards towards the Caprivi tip of Zim in a Mazda Eagle 4x4. Nothing like your well equipped Ford Ranger here! As I advanced into unknown remoteness, an eerie silence engulfed me and made me tremble with fear in broad daylight. The tree-lined road track gradually narrowed and became rougher and rougher, It was becoming clear that I had ventured too much too far, occasionally glimpsing the mighty Zambezi through the thick bushes; whereupon I made a u-turn and retraced my way back to my hotel lodgings. The real thrill for me came when the whole attempt became a memory. I hope to try the real thing in SA or Namibia and perhaps bump into you. Love from Zimbabwe.

Another great one Ryan, the serenity and thrill of travelling solo is the best and it is what I love doing through the deserts in Outback Australia, thankfully we don't have predators here. Four months is my longest solo trip and I was a looney tune by the end of it, so I understand your trepidation about travelling solo.

Congrats on a high class and honest doccie! In the 70's I spent 12 days collecting butterflies in a rainforest, stok siel alleen. So I know what being absolutely alone in the world means. If you think you are a loner you will certainly learn that you need the company of your fellow man.

If you can shake the thoughts from your mind, I think it makes it easier to accept. The wild though as magic as it is, allows for tricks to be played upstairs 🤣 maybe just easier when travelling in a group 🤟

Filming all this catching all these angles solo is very very hard work this is definitely a labor of love . Congratulations on being nervous going on hunters road solo but doing it anyway. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾well done .l was literally laughing at you when you thinking of the predators but am sure looking back now past the fear is an amazing person huddle you crossed . Glad the rats didn’t chow the engine cables😂😂😂l have traveled solo but traveling solo depends on destination.

Great stuff. I did my first solo trip Jan 22 to Namibia in my Hilux towing my Imagine Comfortvan. I traveled solo from Windhoek via the C26 to Goanikontes in the moonlandscape, then to Spitskoppe , from there to Brandberg and after that to Twyfelfontein. It was great travelling alone for a week, but it was also nice to meet up with my friends at Torrabay for the next 2 weeks and travel back as a group via Botswana to Lephalale. So to me yes I will travel solo again but it was great having friends on the long hauls . Happy overlanding.

Mushi sterek! That mugwagwa looks like it'll test the hardest over-landers... I wonder what the experience would've been had Ed & Chris travelled along. Its tough exploring alone - thats why not many do it. Hope the Ranger is easily/quickly repairable.

Great, informative video Ryan. As for me, after losing my wife 5 years ago, I travel alone and prefer it. My photography takes a back seat with the rare occasion that I am with others and the pace of which you prefer to travel is not always easy. The Hunters road looks to be a great alternative to taking the tar road and will do that in November perhaps. Find Adventure 4x4 boabab to camp under. Following your videos have really helped in my planning of my 5week Botswana safari with the added bonus of thing to do to my overlanding rig here in Canada. So thanks for that, keep up the great content. Cheers!🍁

Thank you Kevin, and really sad to hear it mate. Yes, not always easy when travelling alone or with people. I think that when travelling alone or with people there are pros and cons that one learns over time, and with that you start to figure out what you prefer and don’t prefer. I have grown accustomed to travelling with people, and as a result find it difficult to travel alone. Enjoy every moment alone or with people, life is too short and our moments count for so much. I have to admit, after spending most of my life in the wilds, doing it with fellow ouens is better simple for the sharing of memories. These days I am left to doing most of my adventures solo. Maybe I snore too loud. LOL

Another enjoyable episode - Thank You! I travel solo as often as possible and look for the elusive balance between trips with family / friends and solo adventures. Have done some epic solo trips in South Africa, Australia,Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Oman and the US, with up to 4 or 5 week stretches alone. My use Prados as my overlanding platform [GX470 in the US], sleep outside in a hamock or on a stretcher under the stars. I do have a ground tent - but it remains packed up 95% of the time. Similar to your experience, I find the 1st night out the most difficult to fall asleep, but find a rythm soon after. I kayak and fish when feasible, explore and practice my "bush craft" skills. My set-up is more basic than yours, and I bought my 1st Fridge/Freezer today in anticipation of an upcoming Botswana trip in Jul/Aug this year. Great work - I alway learn something from every one of your episodes. Hope we can catch up on the trains sometime in the future.

Also did Gonarezhou, it was an absolute surprise and what a special national park. A true drivers experience. Elephants were a bit grumpy though, but understandable. A very very special place, and I’ll definitely be back to explore more of the park

In the past years I’ve done solo travels in both Botswana & Namibia. I’ve found that after 3 days I start to need human contact, even if it’s just a server in a coffee shop. Sounds around camp make the hair on your neck stand up at first but keeping a car door open as an “emergency” shelter, always cleaning up after a meal mitigate some of the risks and the others you just have to live with.

Its crazy how human contact is so important to ones mind, especially when in the wild. There's only so much talking to one's self, before one's self begins to think they are going mad. Hi Mark, yes, June is the winter month, and the road should be dry. We are currently having late rains. How far that stretches I don't know, but June will be dry. It will be very cold, so I'd worry about that as a first place. Always great to inspire and encourage. May I ask, for how long and with how many people? Check in with Mike West from Woodlands Lodge and Bush Campsite. Have a chat with him for all the info regarding the history of hunters Road, and for a place to camp on route. You are going to enjoy it. Something different for sure.

@@4x4ventures_southafrica I’m doing 2 weeks in southern Namibia and then 10 days from Brandberg Lodge up to the Rooi Drom. I need to drop my travel partner off at Windhoek airport and then I have +- 15 days to get back to CT. Originally I was going to cross at Buiterpos turn south and sweet talk my way to Swartpan at Kgalagadi ( I had to give up my days there last year when I pulled foreigners out of trouble). Ther alternate was Baines and Kubu but then I watched your video. Normally I travel alone but this time I’m taking my neighbour with. She was only meant to be with me for 2 weeks ( southern nam ) but petrol prices 😬😬😬😬😬😬

Hey Mark, sounds like an amazing trip mate. I have still to do Namibia, and the Kgalkgadi. Both of which are going to be amazing adventures with great wildlife viewing. Nxai Pans is quite a nice option, and Kubu I would only do for 1 night. There is also the option to go from nxai pan to Kumagha along the boteti, and the travel South to the northern section of the central Kalahari, enter in at Matswre gate and explore Kori camp, Sunday pan and that area. Very wild. Goodluck and enjoy it. It will be something special which ever way you go 👍

My Nat Luna 90 Litre stays in our Everest Trailer on a Straight out Slide .. Keep it simple is the way to go

Ummm, that would only work if the height was level to your hips Peter. The floor of the tray is as high as my diaphragm. A straight pull our slide just wouldn't work, how would skmeone gain access to the inside of the fridge. Great difficulty i reckon.The fridge slide wasnt the issue, but rather a weak floor. Aluminium just isn't strong enough to bear the weight of a drop down fridge slide, and a 96ltr fridge that's loaded. Drop down fridge slide works and is robust, but floor, needed some work. Sorted now though. Thanks Peter, for your POV

Great footage, you can use Marder spray in around the engine and chassis to deter rodents, travelling with some eases the mind slightly especially travelling solo.

Yeh we went through the the main camp in Dete on a game drive, it was great but as you say it was very rundown and all the money you pay to go in clearly doesn't make it back into the park. Great video again!

You should get infrared motion sensor cameras that run at night around your vehicle - just to see what comes sniffing around during the night.

Once again an informative and interesting video. The damage looks expensive, can you modify it so it won't happen again? I got back to Johannesburg this evening after a truly magical Kruger experience. The only comparable experience I have had is when I went to Antarctica with the NZ Navy. A different environment with very different wildlife but Kruger was similar in so many ways. It is unique and lets us experience the world as it was before development. I am truly in awe of Africa. I would love to meet if you are around. I have to go off on Monday for business until Thursday14th then I leave S.A. on the 23rd.

Awesome video 😁 top tip with the rat worry, mix peppermint oil/extract with water in a spray bottle (the stronger the smell the better) and spray it in and around the engine bay, they hate the smell and won’t go in there.

All good mate. Everything got sorted a couple days after I got back. The setup is working great now, and already done two trips since. Zero issues, bar one . . . . I'm not on a trip now 🤣
