In this video, I'm out with my dog, Barney, in Sissinghurst, Kent. I'm using my 4x5 large format camera and a sheet of Kodak Ektar colour negative film to take a photograph by a lake.
I decided to take a two second exposure of some leaves filtering through a gap, hopefully keeping them sharp while the top of the image has blur from the ripples on the water.
I also reached 1000 subscribers this week, so I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that has supported me by subscribing, commenting, liking and sharing my videos - much appreciated ;-)

Perfect dog portrait at 3:57. The technical aspects of your leaf photo are great. Personally, I'd try to get a shot where the reflections are of a colorful sunset sky rather than busy tree branches that don't add color. For my taste, I'd "cheat" -- clean leaves of various colors, arrange them in an interesting pattern, and use a net of panty hose to filter out the bits from the water surrounding the leaves. It's not a "found" masterpiece, but it's still a single photo of a real thing, minus anything detracting from "the statement".

Thanks, I appreciate your comments. I know that some people would go to great lengths to tidy up a shot but I'm not really interested in that. I'm happy to have it a bit rough around the edges.

A brilliant image and fantastic video. Very soon you’ll be passing your 5K which is very much deserved, I feel like I’m very late to the party. A few years ago I did my C&G in photography at night school and for my project I did the journey of water. Each image was taken in a different style starting with a micro shot of a drop of water landing on a holly berry moving right up to a super wide angled shot of the sea. My standard image was a single leaf in a puddle. (We weren’t allowed to edit the shot in post but nowhere did it say I couldn’t manoeuvre the subject). I give all my digital images to a charity I work for and that has been the best selling print. You mentioned the price of the images, and I think that’s something people like myself who only watch KZfaq doesn’t always appreciate. We see you on a screen so must all be millionaires of rock star proportions. I’d like you to know that I for have a real gratitude of both the effort and cost you and others, like Steve O'Onions below, put into making these videos. I’m frequently either in too much pain or I’m too unwell to go out with a camera, which is part of the reason for my analogue 365 project, and people like yourselves bringing photography to my iPad make a phenomenal difference. Thank you.

Thank you Mark. You clearly get so much enjoyment out of photography and well done in keeping up with your 365 project. I'm glad you find the videos useful. Yes, they are very time intensive for very little comeback (financially anyway). There are encouraging signs that the channel is growing and getting my work out in front of an audience is starting to build small income streams here and there. Never will be a millionaire or a rock star though ;-)

Nicely done Craig. I have a Crown Graphic with a 135mm lens I have not tried out as yet. I have been following Steve O'Nions and just yesterday found your channel. You both seem so relaxed using the large format camera yet I'm intimidated by the thing. Seems silly to look at the camera knowing full well how to operate the darn thing yet unwilling to take it out for a spin. It's like having stage fright. Seems bonkers, but there it sits waiting for me to drop in a few sheets and screw up. Anyways I am enjoying your vlogs and hopefully will eventually get over the fear of failure and have a go with the little beast. Keep those vlogs coming Craig. I'm enjoying your work.

Go for it Wayne. Like you say, you have everything there so why not give it a spin. You may go wrong but chances are you'll be fine and once it's processed, you'll have this big ol' negative looking at you with tons of lovely detail. Good luck.

Great job with the leaves shot Craig, never easy to get the top to bottom sharpness with 4x5. Congratulations with the channels success too, very well deserved. I echo your thoughts about Winter shooting too, I’ll be breaking out the B&W once the last Autumn colour has gone.

And just a personal editing suggestion. Show the scanned image the moment after you take the image. Its just easier for the viewer and makes it seem more personalised - rather than having to think back which photos were taken when

Mark it’s good to give yourself these challenges. They’re not easy to do when it’s a 365 project. I did a 365 portrait project in 2014, going out and finding a new person to photograph every day and then posting it that day. I’d do it again but not like that - too time intensive.

Great work on the shot, Craig - I really like it too. I hear you on the cost of color processing. I develop it myself but find I never shoot enough of it in any given season to use up all the chemicals (adding to the cost). B&W I never tire of and the costs are certainly much better :) Congrats on the subs, that's a huge milestone.

I like the contrast of colors in the image and you can really see and feel the separation but in a good way. I was recently photographing a similar scene and going in quite close at about 70mm and was having a hard tiene controlling the glare. Anyways lovely result. Enjoyed this as always.

Congrats on the 1k Craig, you have an enjoyable channel. Today's image is something most would have walked over/past and I have found that film shooters like yourself seem to be tuned slightly different to digital photographers when it comes to searching out images - or do I image that? :) The image itself was ok but not something I can honestly say really grabbed me - but I wasn't clicking that shutter and at the end of the day togs take images for themselves (unless you are a portrait/wedding photographer) mostly so that is all that matters. Saying that I do enjoy watching you going through the composition and process of taking it. tfs

Hi Alan. I find I'm getting drawn to quieter, subtler subjects at the moment. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. I quite liked the shot myself which isn't always the case. I suppose for me, I'm remembering the whole experience - going out, walking around for an age, eventually finding a composition, setting up the shot and pulling the film out of the tank at the end. I can try my best to get this across in my video but ultimately, I was the only one who was there so I'll take more from it. Cheers for your support - you've always been there to watch and comment on what I've been doing so thanks again :-)
