When you say that wide tyres don’t have any advantage, do you mean for overlanding? For overlanding in Australia? I guess they have advantages on certain terrains, like sand or snow. Don’t they? I’ve arrived from three weeks in Iceland and I was totally shocked by the absolutely massive tyres A LOT of 4x4s have over there. I suppose that might be somehow justified and that it is not only a trend. What do you have to say? Thanks!

I've noticed that folks that don't want to chop out their fender wells and the like or go for big lifts like narrower tires. Skinnier tires can be taller and still tuck up inside your fenders when you're flexing. Aired down, a skinnier taller tire will actually still have a larger footprint than a wider, shorter tire. They have less rolling resistance, more downward bite, they steer better in the front at least. Even most mud boggers I know like the narrow stuff, but when you get into man-made mudholes, or the snow in Iceland, your skinny tire will probably sink up to your axles or over the hood of your car before you reach the actual ground. Skinny's also take up less room and weigh less. I think wide tires are popular because so many people run aggressive, wide mud tires on their full size trucks and they will be drive on pavement whereas narrow tire feels a little more squirmy. I find that the normal width wide tires seen almost trucks spin out less easily on pavement and feel more stable

Here in Iceland we have the same dilemma. Over all hight is always king to float on snow but then you have arguements that skinny tires work better on light jeeps with litte power and wide for the others. But most agree and talk about how high tires they choose. F.x. for long highland or glacier trips 38 inch is standard on light pickups, 44-46 inches on medium size jeeps and 54 inches for the heavy american trucks. But with tires like that we can let them down to even 1 psi and then the jeeps footprint on the snow will get lighter then a humans.

Wider tyres perform worse on sand than a narrower tyre, it's the bigger outside rolling diameter that makes the better performance on sand by making a longer foot print.

I guess its just me but I find 90% of aftermarket wheels to be be downright tacky or ugly. I actually like the look of the basic steel dish wheel.

I agree. Something about them just looks right on the Cruiser in Grey. I'm actually widening mine to 8 inch for the next set of tyres.

Same, and in fact the tyres aren’t bad either. I’ve never seen Andrew in a situation where such aggressive tyres are absolutely essential, never. So the normal tyres are fine.

They are hard to find even in the states. Though the Toyota crowd is the primary user of them even in the US as the 255/85 allows a Tacoma or 4 Runner to fit 33s with only a 2 inch lift with no fender rub, the 285/75 size requires some cutting in the wheel well to fit without rubbing even with up to a 4 inch lift. And the Tacoma and 4 Runner are by far the most popular overlanding vehicles in the US.

@@mrvwbug4423 It gets discussed in the Xterra groups as well. We can fit 285 without a lift (barely) although most thrown 2 inch lift. But there is a growing group who swear by 255s, and I'm sure more would consider it if they were more available (myself included).

Yes to all these comments…..the stock tyres and rims are perfect. “Performance” isn’t necessarily tied into a wider tyre.

I also follow "the road chose me". It's very interesting the two different approaches to overlanding. Here you are taking off steel and replacing with alloy and he is taking off alloy and replacing with steel.

Thank you for carefully describing the nature of your relationship with ROH and Falken. It gives your channel much more credibility than if you had skirted over that or even concealed the nature of the deal. It's not a minor thing either - around $4k for the 5 wheels and tyres I expect.

Having it explained properly as part of the video, not a footnote hidden in tiny print, and knowing he approached them because he rated them, rather than he's put them on cos they were free, makes a big difference. It's why when people suggest he start taking proper promotions on I baulk. Can you imagine a Manscaped promotion in one of his videos?

@@j3652 you can’t just say because he rated them. You have to qualify that term. Rated them highly for example. Because I often rate things too, but rate them poorly. Using the term rated must be suffixed with qualification as to how they are rated. It’s like rated recovery points. Useless term on it’s own without the rating stated. They might be rated to only 1000kg and therefore be useless. A toweye is rated, but not for a snatch recovery. I wish people knew how to use English.

Personal choices, but having spent many miles travelling around Afghanistan I would insist upon a steel wheel rim for reliability and reparability factors. 7.50r16s or 235/85r16 are the only tyre choices for quick resupply.

This vehicle will be going to outback Australia, not Afghanistan, and with one spare you can get to the next town where LandCruiser rims are plentiful. Alloy rims are actually stronger overall believe it or not just can't be repaired track side, but are also lighter. Overall they actually are better, unless you are days away from access to replacement rims for your vehicle.

Watching this video and reading through these comments is great to see 255/85s have an appreciation. I'm tossing up between sticking with 235/85 or going with the 255s next round.

If you've got a Troopy, they are a really good size. I think they are a couple of mm taller than the OEM tyre size of 225/95. Speedo gets marginally more accurate. And when you air down you get a really good long footprint.

I was in exactly the same dilemma for my Troopy build. Really wanted to stay with skinnier tyres after years of 235/85s on Defenders. I ended up with 255/85 on 16" alloys and I think they are excellent. I went BFG KM3 mud tyres because you can't get a KM2 all Terrain in 255/85, sadly. I'm only going with 1 spare. Have done thousands of Kms outback carting around 2 spares and never needed both. So I guess, watch me need 2 spares sometime in the near future having said that. We did the Border Track last week (on the SA/Victoria border) and it was as wet and muddy as. Tyres were fantastic. Lots of confidence. Other vehicles slipping around like mad but the 255/85 KM3s made it look easy. Cheers - David

I was up that way playing in the mud a couple of weeks ago too. Same size tyres but Yokohama Geolandar MT G003 on my Defender having lots of fun. They seemed to clear the clay mud better than my previous muddies & it's good to hear the KM3s do the same as a mate is gonna buy them for his Defender 👍

I think 255/85 16’s are perfect on Landcruisers. Nice and tall but not too wide, fit on a 6-8” rim perfectly. I absolutely love them and the gearing is good, often correcting the speedo. I have two sets of Bfg’s and a set of Yokohama’s and am very happy with both , also had a set of Cooper ST’s in the same size years ago.

@@4x4touring47 Around White Springs Lookout is also a pretty good spot for mud if you want to play a bit. Hasn't been dug out by the 37" players yet & there's a decent camp there that doesn't get too soggy in the wet. Quick bailout to the Murrayville pub too if needed 😀

@@4x4touring47 The road in from Pinnaroo was deadly slippery. We did it in pouring rain and had a couple of vehicles sideways in a ditch. Once we got to the sandy parts it was good going. A lot of the really big bog holes have get-around tracks on the side, so you don't need to submerge your car if you don't want to (I didn't). Car weighed about 50Kg more at the end of the track. Sticky sticky mud. Needed an hour of Karchering to get it clean again.

Makes me feel good, I choose 255/85-16 yokohama muddies for my 100 series. I'm in the states and most guys frowned upon my narrow tire choice, as wide mud tires on lifted trucks is the nom around here. However the yokos have a nice square profile and grip tenaciously on rocky terrain so far.

Running 255/85 R16 Yokohama Geolandar MT G003 on my Defender & it's an awesome size & tyre choice. No worries from me on taking it remote as modern construction tyres can cope with the outback as long as you look after them. Been all over with them, probably on tougher tracks than I've seen Andrew on, with no dramas at all so unless you're forging new tracks don't stress about availability.

@@petergallagher1825 Yep, still going strong after many trips to the Vic High Country, deserts including the muddy sections & countless corrugations. You have to air down a bit further than you think on soft sand as the sidewalls are so strong they don't elongate so easily, but they still perform excellently when you do. No air loss issues & wearing evenly so far with rotations every 5000km or so. Couldn't rate them higher tbh 👍

I agree with a lot of the other comments about 255/85r16 tyres, these are a far better option for overlanding than a 285 or 265. I think this is a size that should be getting a lot more attention. The height and track width of the tyre accompanied by an elongated footprint make it superior to the wider options. Just look at what the army and emergency services use for real offroading. . .definitely not wide tyres.

The army and emergency does not do hard off roading because there is no logic for them to do that. it is also price and breakdowns calculated.

Good video. I put Wildpeak AT3s on my rig and they’ve been the best tyres I’ve owned. Still an aggressive tread, however perform like a road tyre on the bitumen and wet. Enjoy the new wheels and tyres - they look great. Cheers Mark

Yikes, im not sure about that blue. You can never go wrong with the sandy color. I run a Cooper STMaxx 255/85 16 and love them, surprised you didnt mention that one.

Andrew, I like how you articulate the reasons exactly why you chose the wheels & tires! I like the black and blue build. I notice now more recently your builds have very specific reasons for the equipment, upgrades etc. based on efficiency and experience. This requires "out of the box " thinking which many sometimes don't go along with or understand.

He 'chose' them because they were freebies from ROH and Falken. He walked past what he openly says is the 'best' size (255/85) because Falken did not make them available in Australia. He is a sell out.

Interesting choice, I've just put Toyo open country 265 x 70 x 16 on my D22 (the tyres are now worth more than the ute) I wanted 75 profile but was worried it would rub (standard suspension starting to sag, they would be fine on a better suspension) and a lot more expensive. They handle quite nicely. It's been very wet here lately and I haven't lost traction once on the blacktop. Only had them off road once and handled it fine although the corrugations did upset the wheel balance. Road noise is there but OK with the radio on.

235/85r16 is what I‘ve personally run and continue to run. And only paired with steel rims for trackside repairs and reliability.

The closest thing we have in the us to a troops is the land cruiser and everyone uses 8”wide wheels on those. I have an old surf with the same size wheels and tires.

I had a mate in my old 4wd club that used 255's on his 40, he absolutely loved them, but he so often had to run them well past the point of replacement because they were so hard to get hold of. I went with 285's on my rig, mainly because they are such a common size, and I feel I could safely get my hands on one anywhere I go.

I think narrow and tall is almost always better in all conditions. For sand, less rolling resistance for the same contact patch as wide tires. 🙂

Great video! I’m in the process of changing tires on my 5th Gen 4Runner. Decided to go with Falken Wildpeak AT3W 255/80/17 from the stock size on a 2” lift (2”on rear and 2.25” on front). Came from a D110 with 235/85’s and they were fantastic off-road so looking forward to these new tires on the Toyota. Overall weight being added was a big factor in my decision making process.

I also have these ROH viper rims, but I purchased them for a different reason, which I has not been discussed anywhere online I can find. My choice was to do with the GVM rating on a rim! When you have a GVM upgrade on a 79 series the GVM on the standard tyres are not legally rated for that weight upgrade. I enquired after the fact back to my suspension upgrade store, and they researched it and found this to be correct. In hind sight the store is now having to upgrade rims with there suspension upgrades to comply with Qld Law. Like the Rhino rack load rating Saga, I think this is a topic that could be raised through your channel. Cheers.

On the matter of narrow vs wide: I've owned a succession of Land Cruisers and Land Cruiser-adjacent vehicles in Namibia, and I've always sworn by something in the neighbourhood of 7.50r16. This is clearly a little narrower than what's being discussed here, but they've always proven to be utterly reliable and robust.

Great video, it's great these suppliers provide you with items like these, to me it's a great exercise is fit for purpose, I run 18x8 methods with 285/65/18 and I chose a +25 offset so it's fattens the car up, and this is the opposite of fit for purpose ha ha, I just like the lighter rim, less unsprung weight, which again is pointless except its nice on the black stuff. I enjoy reading the comments of your followers as you have a great bunch of subscribers that are informed and engaged. Nice one!!!!!!

I just went up from stock to the 265/75 R16 on my Toyota Tacoma TRD off road, stock 8” wide wheels. Love the set up. Considered the 255/85 R16 but was just a bit too much with no lift. I went with the Goodyear Duratracs as I wanted something a bit more aggressive, but not full on mud terrains.
