A great video. Let me just say to anyone who's thinking about doing this yourself be prepared to spend twice of mount of time that you planned on. When we bought our first boat the dealership talked us into buying a used one that they had taken in on a trade in. They showed us binders full of receipts and repair bills and talked about how meticulous the previous owner was. They had suggested us to buy this one to see if we like the boating life before spending a lot more money on something new. At that time the only known issue was the radio did not work. We were fine with that I have experience and working on car electronics and wiring. After buying the boat we were only able to take it out twice before it was time to winterize. I decided during that time to fix a few things including the radio. Once I remove the panel for the radio that's where I questioned everything the dealer had told us. The person who messed with the radio or changed it out completely did not use not a single connector and not a single piece of electric tape. They use the old brown painters tape that were completely dry rotted and brittle. After I saw all of that I decided to rip out every wire on the boat and start from the beginning. I really thought I could knock this out in two weekends but the deeper I got the more issues came up. Once I was done I started replacing all of the bilge pumps and all of the lights. The one thing I can tell anybody who buys a used boat is to physically check the bilge pumps! Just because it makes noise does not mean it works! Out of six build pumps that all made noises none of them could pump water out of a bucket. The easiest way to find out if your pumps are working is to put your drain plug in and fill your build with water and try to pump it out. And have someone on the outside mark the holes that the water is coming out of. Each bilge pump has its own separate way out of the boat. Sorry for the lengthy comment but this is something I'm passionate about. I've been on the water with my wife and children and we have had to deal with a engine fire caused by bad wiring. we were very fortunate that we did not lose our boat or life. Again great video I enjoyed the series.

Yes ive had the same experience. Oh its just this, just that, then once i took apart the panels to inspect it was a ratsnest with exposed wiring, wonky splices and no labelling at all. Really really frustrating when trying to sort other peoples wiring jobs.

Bought a used boat a few weeks ago, was lucky enough to buy something newer (at least what I call newer) as in a 2006 model with everything but the anchor light working, and that included a working vhf and garmin. The garmin is dated, it takes some sort of chip plug thing to load maps etc so the gps doesn't work but the depth/fish/finder works fine and even gives temps. I'm in the same old waters I've run since I was a kid so plotting isn't really something I need, so this saved a ton of money. I didn't quite know how much until I watched this video though. Jeeeeeezus chrize did I ever luck out!

Right now we have three and I need to finish one and sell it to be able to keep up on the purchases of stuff for this one :) So there might be a break coming up on the Ocean Master, maybe a week or two, we'll see, there will still be a video though!

The cost of a serious failure is the boat, the next boat, and maybe the whole marina - and you with it. Do it right or take up golf. Imagine yourself huddled in the bow in a burning boat, at sea, in rough, cold water conditions if the wrong thing happens at the wrong time. Good wiring is your route back home. Listen to these guys, folks. Still boating after all these years of messing with older boats : ) Fry fish not wiring !

Awesome! Thank you! I agree with you completely :) Um right now I do really like Simrad, but I think they have to figure out a better way of processing and implementing all of the updates to all of their machines. Seems like once a month they need an update and it's this whole deal with downloading and uploading it off a card, seems to be more work and hassle than it needs to be. Saving waypoints and tracks and reuploading stuff, seems to be too much. But I'd go with Simrad right now. Garmin might still have them beat on some stuff but that's just because of the updating :)

My budget is small too.. average guy. I upgraded my gps recently with the simrad go 12xse it was under 2500$ and came with the 3in 1 dransducer. Can add radar later once I save some more coin. Gps units are super expensive so it can hurt you're pockets quickly but it's like buying a boat somtimes you'll wish u would've went a little bigger to start instead of cheaping out. Then spending more to upgrade. This is my favorite channel on KZfaq now. I love that somebody's willing to teach all this for free.. can't wait to see you lace a t-top on that boat so I can do mine.

Hi, don't know if you will see this, but I might as well ask and see if I you have a video for it. My boat is from 1991. My starter on my 96 115 Merc works and the motor starts up no problem. This issue is the dash, I have no power getting to it anymore when it was working fine all season. I assume it's a fuse. (but maybe not)... There in lies my problem. I can't find the fuse if there is one. Do you have any videos on how to test for continuity? Love the channel, especially when working on the older two strokes. All the best, Keith

How about replacing some of the stringers and cross member. Noticed they had rotted away near the stern. Perhaps that was addressed in another video. Was also wondering about the integrity of the transom. Judging from the high bilge water stain appears water has sat for a long while, thus damaging the fiberglass laminated wood. Please comment! Have enjoyed all of your videos. Very informative!

Just to be Capt. Obvious...I bought a great 2006 G3 last year. Had the electronics installed by a dealer I trust. The only thing I wish had been done is LABELING the wires. Just makes trouble shooting that much easier...I should have done it, should have asked, but didn't. I've hade boats for over 40 years, and wiring is the biggest pain: boat or trailer.

If you are going with SIMRAD, check out the GO series, very similar to the NSS, but a lot cheaper if you are just running a single unit. It loses some features, but for me, it wasn't enough to justify the price hike. I got my GO7 with the 3-in-one ducer for under 600 when they ran a promo at a local marine supplier (Defender Marine).

Im a commercial electrician but i have never worked on a before, but if you understand electricity you understand electricity. A friend called me and said she was watching TV on her boat for about an hour then all the power shut off and the individual breakers started reading reverse polarity. this should be impossible considering no work has been done. The main breaker has 120V to ground and is not reversed when i checked. I can see the hot coming off the main output into the input of the other breakers but i ran out of time and didnt check the reading, but im pretty sure its correct. What would be the next thing you would check? Im assuming its a equipment problem somewhere not a wiring problem

Hahah sorry bro, no we are still on the transom but I'm working on getting all of the material and doing the work to get the footage to make the video. I've had some things come up that have taken over a couple Saturdays so it put me back a couple weeks :( It's the age old problem of having too much work to do and not enough time to get it all done! Don't worry, next week will be a transom video, but then their might be another video after that, and I'll be taking 2 days off work to do the actual glass work. I'm working on possibly putting it all into 1-2 videos when it comes to the actual glass work. But a longer video takes a lot longer to edit and make and I don't want to just not put out a video :( You should come on down and get some hands on experience ;)

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
Lol no generally not. But sometimes, because it is dealing with a boat here, certain jobs are actually given labor breaks because of certain circumstances. Generally though, hourly is hourly. A lot of electronics and boat wiring companies though will bid it out by the job. So lets say you wanted to do a job like this with replacing everything. They would bid it more on a 2-3 week time frame and with a flat cost. Like 25K or whatever the situation is. Then because of the discounts they get on the parts, it works out fairly.

Sorry fat finger...Thus even a “00” handles 350 amps whereas the “0” handles 280 amps. You want all the amps to go to the starter especially when it’s a cold engine in a cold ambient atmosphere. Anything less you would be overheating the cable. I’ll still politely disagree, but keep up the good work.

For the electronics why don't you get a Simrad G09 XSE. It comes with a total scan transducer. Right now westmarine has them for $1100 but the put them on sale every 3 month for $850. I got mine there and does everything I need. There is not much of a difference between the GO and the NSS
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
That's true, they are super nice, for me though, and this is totally preferential to me. But I like having the buttons and the knobs :) I work on these things every day and also when I get a chance to go out and fish, it's usually really rough out. So I see that the touchscreens like eventually fail and not respond so having the buttons as a back up is super nice. Not to mention when you're out there and it's really rolling, it's easier to use the knobs and buttons instead of touching the screen when you're bouncing around everywhere. Plus I fish with a lot of old timers and they can't see anyway lol but that is just my reasoning for choosing that one. I haven't gotten much experience with the new GO's so I could be completely wrong. I remember when the Mercury Vessel Views started being manufactured by Simrad and the touch screen would have tons of problems after a couple years. ( We see hundreds of them so we get to see all the defects over a huge quantity of them) but they could be completely different now. I was looking at that when putting this together, if it wasn't for the button thing I would have been all over those lol How do you like yours?
@yordangonzalez5239
@yordangonzalez5239 4 жыл бұрын
@@BornAgainBoating I agree with with you 100%. The nss is better and I love the knobs but I just couldn't spend that kind of money. $850 was a great deal for me. So far no problems with the unit. One big difference is that with the touchscreen I noticed the NSS responds faster than the GO. By the way if after this massive build you still got extra cash laying around check out CMOR cards for your nss, they are insane. Thanks a lot for the videos if have used a lot of your videos to guide myself through all the work I have done in my boat

@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
I totally understand man, who knows if we'll actually end up putting that in. Most of the time we end up putting in used GPS's and whatever we can find on Yard sale lol I just looked at those CMOR cards and they look awesome! Thanks for the heads up! That's awesome on the repower, I don't have anything against the Suzukis. Shoot right now you have trouble getting Mercury or Yamaha's so Suzuki's are next in line! I think we just back an update and you can't get a Mercury V-6 or V-8 for a repower for up to 20 months! I know Yamaha's are available sooner than that but with proper maintenance they are all pretty good engines. I would say to look into your local dealers though, when buying a new engine you want to have a good relationship with the people that will do the warranty work in case anything pops up.

Which really helps with the KZfaq Algorithm and them showing the video to more people! It's really helped with the subs too, we've been growing pretty well. I had to change up putting it in the video opposed to having an outro with all of that stuff in it, because then the view duration just dropped off and KZfaq would stop suggesting the videos.
