Today we’re talking about some of the x-ray changes that happen when you get hallux rigidus or hallux limitus.
If your doctor tells you the x-rays show hallux limitus…what does it mean?
We’re going to talk about these five things that you can see commonly on the x-rays when you have hallux rigidus.

I had crunchy bone on bone and lots of deterioration. Then, I started running later in life. I now have space at that joint and rarely any pain. My podiatrist was horrified at the x-ray but agreed that, at least functionally, it's better. I'm not recommending running as a treatment for hallux limitus though it worked in my case. I love learning, acquiring knowledge and sharing knowledge. Whenever I've been injured, I read as much as I can about the injury, studying journal articles about research in the area. I wish I could find a podiatrist who enjoys teaching as much as Dr. Segler does. They've been dismissive or uninterested in sharing information. And the last two podiatrists gave me the wrong diagnosis. Thanks, Dr. Segler, for sharing knowledge and being respectful of runners.

Thank you so much for your comments and for sharing your story and experience. Everyone is different and everyone's goals are unique. Obviously, it seems the job of the doctor should actually be to help you figure out how to achieve those goals, and not just avoid activities you enjoy. Functionality is the key! How it feels how it moves is all more important than how it looks on an x-ray! Paying attention to your body and putting what you feel in perspective when you get instructions from a doctor always matters, and your situation demonstrates that! Good work!!!

@@DocOnTheRun Thank you for your kind words. I wish I could print your perspective from your website and hand it to my podiatrist, but I doubt he would be receptive. "Most runners intuitively know what is wrong." Yep. I have a stress fracture in the calcaneus. He diagnosed tendinitis. I requested an MRI which provided the diagnosis. I fired my previous podiatrist when he wanted to treat a post tib tendon partial tear with a boot, crutches, and ibuprofen four months post injury. I knew loading the tendon was the proper approach and found a PT to work with me. Dr. Segler, you are a rare health care provider and I'm sorry there aren't more like you. I appreciate the education you provide to the running community. As we become better educated we can act as our own advocates and, if we're lucky, be able to work as partners with our doctors so we can recover as quickly as possible.

I will check out that paper, thanks. Do you have solution options in the paper or in one of your videos? I was bone-on-bone arthritis and decided to have surgery to have it "cleaned up." I chose that route because I was hoping it would prevent future injuries due to stride change. (I have very high arches and some leftover issues with an old avulsion fracture which, with some overuse, caused me to get my first case of plantar fasciitis.) Nothing I can do now, but I am hoping I made a good choice.
