Should a runner have surgery for a plantar plate tear

There are a couple of reasons that you should consider surgery and they're really simple.
The first one is that if you have tried everything else and nothing will work.
If you have honestly tried it, saying you kind of messed around with a boot a little bit, or you sort of use crutches, or you sort of taped the toe or you sort of used some pads and you're not getting better, that's not trying it.
You have to be honest with yourself about that. But when you have clearly failed all of the things that are non-surgical and you cannot get better, then surgery makes sense.

Is there such a thing as an arthroscopic/endoscopic/percutaneous repair? Similar to what is done with anterior ankle impingement? It seems like this joint capsule would be rather easily accessible with a scope and if it's just chronic inflammation instead of a tear, and could be debrided with very minimal downtime if any? Where the patient could walk out of the hospital on their own power and be back in a shoe in a week? Thank you.

Hello, great video. I have plantar plate surgery today. I hade a badly dislocated toe and ruptured plantar plate. He sais if he couln't get to the ligament from the top where he made the incision he would go from the bottom. He said he was able to suture the ligament from the top of the foot. Does that make sense?

Thank you for watching and I am glad to hear that you found the video helpful! I'm also sorry to hear you had surgery. I can't really comment because I don't know about your case. Did your surgeon not seem to think it made sense??

@@DocOnTheRun hello and thanks so much for response . He seems fine. I just wanted to make sure that you could actually repair the ligament from entering the top of the foot as he said . Since the ligament is on the bottom I’d think you’d need to go in from the bottom . But I will say he was making an incision in the top because he had to shave the dislocated done down a bit so it’s not like he was going through the top only for the ligament . Again just making sure your able to repair a ligament going through in from the top. thanks again
