Shelee recipe - I will revise this recipe as I get better results. Please check back often for the changes.
NEW REVISED RECIPE- USA
Base - Pillow
90% Color Place Satin Interior White (Walmart)
10% Golden Gac 800 - To help with cracking.
Medium to mix with colors - UPDATED
50% Behr High gloss Deep base 8300 enamel untinted. You can also use HGTV Ultra Deep Base from Lowes or Glidden Semi-Gloss Base 3 untinted from Home Depot
25% Minwax Polycrylic
25% Jo Sonja Varnish
You can use any gloss polyurethane that is water-based if you don't have Jo Sonja varnish.
~~~~~~~~
Cell Activator - UPDATED USA recipe
Make this a little thinner than the pillow or paints.
3 Teaspoons Floetrol (USA)
1 Teaspoons Amsterdam Titanium White paint
4 drops Minwax Wood Conditioner
4 drops Liquitex Acrylic Ink (if you don't have Ink or Glue please just try without it)
1/2 Teaspoon Elmers Glue-All
AUSTRALIAN recipe for Cell activator - The Base pillow and Medium are the same as the USA recipe above.
3 1/2 Teaspoons Australian Floetrol
1 Teaspoon Amsterdam Titanium White
I use at least one transparent color in my blooms. You can change the cell activator color, it seems only Amsterdam Paints work the best. Amsterdam Black Oxide and Amsterdam Titanium white works the best so far. I always cover my paintings with a box to help prevent cracking. You can add a little bit of retarder to the paints to help slow down drying. So much I want to try with pouring and not enough hours in a day.
Make sure your pillow, paint and cell activator are the same consistency. They need to tilt at the same time. Don't blow to deep in the middle. Make sure you use untinted deep base as your pouring medium with Poly Crylic and Jo Sonja (if you have it). Look at my recipe in the description of the video. I update it every time I improve it. You can see some of my other videos where I do this technique. You may want to try a swipe or a blow dryer.
Learned so much! Thank you. Question: Did 3 - 4x4 blooms last night as triptych and left to dry so happy. Woke up to cracked surfaces!! Only change was I used semi-gloss in base (all I had on hand). That was probably it? Now how do I salvage my level 3 canvases? Wait and sand them? Thank you - so glad I discovered you even if it was too late for my triptych! Patricia
@PattyPuckettPouringArt
@PattyPuckettPouringArt 3 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh, so sorry. Always practice on tile or something not expensive first. Couple of reasons this happened. The Semi-gloss, fan on over it drying, not covered with a box or something to slow down drying, Did not tilt enough paint off the canvas or your paint was too thick. You can add Gac 800 to your base to help with cracking. So many factors. Don't know how you can save the canvases at this point. Maybe put something stiff under and sand.
Hi Amy, I don't tape. I just use a heat gun and an attachment that has a sharp edge or razor blade to get the drips off. Then I put a square cork to cover the back.
Patty, I have a couple of questions since I almost have all my paints etc and getting ready to finally paint!! I don't have the Golden GAC800 but have Floetrol (US) for my pillow. Could Floetrol be used and if so should I use more than 10% with my Color Place Interior White? Next, could I use a different varnish than the Jo sonja varnish at the 25% ratio... eg. Minwax oil-modified polyurethane clear semi-gloss which I have? Lastly, I don't have the Liquitex Acrylic Ink, but have the glue all. Should I use the Glue All if I don't have the Acrylic Ink? Any need to change the other ratios of the cell activator ingredients without having the Liquitex Acrylic Ink? I know I am probably tweeking out right now (lol) but didn't want to completely screw up my first attempt. Thanks so much for your inputs!!! Tracey
@PattyPuckettPouringArt
@PattyPuckettPouringArt 3 жыл бұрын
You don't have to use Gac 800, don't add Floetrol to your Pillow paint. Just make sure you cover your painting when drying to slow it down. Don't want it cracking. Don't leave a whole lot of paint on the canvas. If the pillow looks a little too thick add some water. Try just a 50/50 mix with Minwax Poloycrylic without the Jo Sonja. Or yes try the other Polyurethane you have. Still use glue if you can. Don't worry about ink, that just made the color brighter. Try it on a coaster first. Make small amounts and adjust if needed. Let me know how it goes. Good luck.
Hi Patty, I have now done two sets of coasters and they turned out pretty good (wish I could send you a pic) I messed up the resin by covering them with cardboard boxes (lots of cardboard dust settled on top) but they still look nice and I can use them around the house. I was going for a Bloom on both sets but the first just look like a regular pour. They colors were nice though 😊 The second set I did kinda worked but the colors I choose were kinda blah. The premade cork I bought on Amazon was slightly bigger than the tile so I think I need to find a different supplier of 4x4 cork backings - if you know any? Also, could you recommend another varnish (I can't get Jo Sonja brand). Should the varnish be water based (I did use water based) Thanks for your help! As I might start selling coaster sets I was wondering how much you would sell a set of coasters and is a set considered 4 or 5 coasters? Thanks again!!
Hi Patty, in your description for the pouring medium, you mention, "25% Minwax Polycrylic, 25% Jo Sonja Varnish, You can use any gloss polyurethane that is water-based if you don't have Jo Sonja varnish." I thought Minwax Polycrylic was a gloss polyurethane varnish. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Jo Sonja is currently unavailable on Amazon. I started looking for a clear varnish at my local Home Depot and I found Varathane 8 oz. Clear Gloss Water-Based Interior Polyurethane, (www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-8-oz-Clear-Gloss-Water-Based-Interior-Polyurethane-200061H/100267533). Is this a replacement for Jo Sonja varnish? It just looks like another version of Minwax Polycrylic. I'm so confused. Thank you in advance.
@PattyPuckettPouringArt
@PattyPuckettPouringArt 3 жыл бұрын
If you don't have Jo Sonja, just use Polycrylic without it. That should work too, just not as well. Give it a try first. People do use Triple Thick gloss varnish also if they don't have Jo Sonja. I always update my recipe so make sure you look in the description for the latest.
@@PattyPuckettPouringArt Hi have tried several with just using Behr 8200 and Minwax Polycrylic with varnish and they have not been too successful. So I'm trying to find an affordable "gloss varnish" but a lot of these products are just labeled as "clear coat" without the word varnish. @@jonaeflure are you in the states!?! If you are, I highly recommend going to speak to the Paint specialist at either a Lowe's or Home Depot, or probably anywhere that has a paint specialist in their paint department, such as Sherwin William's or Ace Hardware, etc. Probably would avoid doing that at a place like Walmart though, because they literally stick whoever they can there with an instruction sheet lol, and they won't know all the details the way an actual "specialist" will. But where I am going with that is this: I have learned SO VERY MUCH from my gal at Lowe's, and my guy at Home Depot!!! From this technique and things such as cloud pours using Satin Enamel!!! Believe it or not, they can be very helpful with many of our techniques!!! I honestly never knew there was such a thing as Acrylic based enamels either myself!!! There is even 100% Acrylic House Paint. They also helped me learn that I didn't actually have to have DecoArt Satin Enamel to make the "Cloud Pour" Technique work!!! To be honest with you, there isn't anything I haven't been able to achieve technique wise yet with the Behr line of paints, that would normally call for something else!!! And the huge perk on that is that it is exponentially cheaper to use their sample paints than it is to say go and buy an 8oz. jar of DecoArt Americana Decor!!! Don't get me wrong, I love my DecoArt paints lol, but to know that I can get the exact same result with a much cheaper alternative is something I like to pass on when I can. Because we all know this hobby of ours can be costly!!! I also LOVE LOVE LOVE me some Rustoleum brand paints... they have excellent qualities about them as well!!! Their line of Gloss Paints is awesome, as well as their metallics!!! Walmart recently put the quart jars of their Metallic Decor paints on sale, and I was in Heaven buying them up!!! I love their effects in Paint Pouring, and have been able to create lacing with them. I have actually been meaning to try them in the bloom technique to see what they will do, but haven't gotten around to it just yet. My whole right side of the bottom kitchen cabinet is stacked full of various "house" paints lol!!! I love to buy the "mistake" paints when I find them on the sale racks, especially the Behr sample sized ones!!! They sale them for $0.50 cents each when they mix them for a customer and then they aren't what the customer wanted, so I consider that a steal!!! Any of that brands "Satin" version can be used in a cloud pour!!! So I literally have close to 40 various colors that can be used for colorful cloud pours now!!! My paint person at Lowe's has been working to recreate Golden's shade of Anthraquinone Blue for me... we haven't been able to achieve it just yet, but she has came close. That is the one downfall of those types of paints, is that the pigments are not at all the same as what many of our favorites are based off of, so there is no way to recreate them all, but many can be!!!
@aandrews9141
@aandrews9141 4 жыл бұрын
@@PattyPuckettPouringArt Hey Patty!!! I noticed in the Part 1 & 2 video that you stated you were mixing pigments for the first time, and you had mixed it with the PolyPour from ColourArte... I know these videos are from a few months back, so I am not sure if you have came up with a new way to handle the Pigments or not (I am about to binge watch your channel lol, so I may find out that you have, so I am sorry if I am speaking on something you already know!!! Which you probably already have after all this time, so I will feel stupid telling you this.), but I thought I would throw in something that may help you out. I didn't know if you knew this or not, but the ColourArte Vivid Enamel is basically just the untinted house Paint that we use in the blooms!!! The PolyPour is actually just an Acrylic Emulsion, which is actually the base that most all of our acrylic paints are made from... so yes, you are 100% correct in that pigments do go into that product to dissolve and create a paint. The difference in theirs tho is that it is in a ready to use form... meaning that it basically turns their Pigments into a ready to pour paint!!! Which means that yes, it is an Acrylic Polymer base, but has been already thinned to a little thinner of a consistency than what some other Acrylic Emulsions can be found in in different forms (such as thickness)... I was thinking that may have effected things in that gold bloom mix you had by maybe making it a little thinner or something!?! Then again, I could be totally and completely off base with all that, I just know I had heard it recommended not to use ready to pour paints to tint with elsewhere. I was just going to say that I have found that it works just fine to add the powdered pigments straight to the Bloom Recipe Pouring Medium, and that so far, they have all mixed just fine without any problems at all!!! Which makes sense since some use the Vivid Enamel as part of their bloom recipe anyways. Also, Golden makes a GAC 100 that is a pure 100% Acrylic Polymer Emulsion... and that one product can be used on ANY brand of pigments as a dilution to prep the pigments for various ways of using them. You can wet any pigment with GAC 100 to prepare it to be used in this technique, or to be used in a paint pour, or even to take the pigments especially made for resins only and make them useable for Paint pouring!!! Most all pigments, as long as they aren't the ones made for resin only, can actually go straight into any of the pouring mediums we use to make our own pouring paint... whether it be the ready to pour types like PolyPour, or it be Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish, or heck... they can even be added to Floetrol actually... but I recommend adding them to something else that has that Acrylic Polymer base first, just to help keep the colors stronger and the pigments binded. But anyone can mix with that base, and then add the Floetrol to get to the consistency they want to pour with. I know you yourself probably already know most all of these things, but thought it may help someone else reading this, such as the lady above or anyone else combing thru comments... but for sure wanted to make sure you knew about their Vivid Enamel versus the mixtures we use for blooms, and thought it may save some hassle with the pigments.
