I was part of the transport team that brought Darby to New York … it’s so good to see that his tail is still wagging like crazy … I can’t believe people treated him the way they did …he really is so good natured and really wants to work …thanks for helping him be happy

I started training the day that they each came home and we haven't stopped training since! It is definitely a lifetime commitment when you have a well-trained dog. You have to refresh that training constantly and they are constantly learning new things.

We started training the day after we picked the puppy up. At this age when they're so interested in everything it is soo easy to use anything that has any value to them as an opportunity for a mini training session. It's so easy to create solid and consistent engagement that way - and that's with terrier breeds who are generally less intrested in working for the handler

Yes! Training starts the second I get a new puppy home at 8 weeks from the breeder. If you have a good breeder, it starts several weeks earlier. My breeder, GSDs, from the day they are born, desensitization starts. She plays CDs with all the loud noises, thunder, gunshots, vacuums, alarms, etc., 24/7. This absolutely builds a bulletproof puppy. She also starts crate training, potty training, walking on multiple surfaces, going through tunnels, flirt pole to test prey drive, etc. All this is detrimental to raising a stable, well rounded dog!

Absolutely! I do the same with all my pups. Exposure & training starts a couple days after being born! Of course, isn't much you can do while their eyes are still closed but, you can get them used to different surfaces, sounds, can handle them & get them used to being touched & petted. Once their eyes open and they're running around, basic obedience stuff and lots of socialization.

14 week old mini poodle. Started training him the moment I got him at 12 weeks with potty training and he has that down now. Now Im continuing to praise for no leash pressure, looking at me on walks, getting in a sit and wait when I open the door, and crate training. Those are the main focus now. Going to make the focus getting him to sit instead of jumping on people and furniture next!

Most of my dogs have been seniors at time of adoption, however, I did still train the basics: sit, stop, stay, off, leave it, and most importantly come! they all loved it and took to it super fast. My last dog was 1.5 yrs old when adopted he was fear-reactive (still is) and considered "high bite risk" We started with the basics and evolved from there...he is now 14 yrs old and happy to report has never bitten anyone. We still do nosework, fitpaws, obedience, and he still likes to bring "his sheep" (the ducks at the neighborhood park) to the pond, we do this every morning rain or shine 🙂People would ask me why did I adopt an "aggressive dog" and my answer was the same every time... they also deserve a chance of having a loving home, a 2nd or 3rd chance at having a "normal life" most of these dogs like mine, just need time, love, patience, consistency and a firm but benevolent leader. And by firm I always emphasize that it is "mean what you say and say what you mean" not yell or hit your dog as that accomplishes nothing but, the relationship has to be build on mutual trust, and respect.

The day I got my GSD I implemented rules and boundaries so that the puppy knew exactly where he fitted in. We got him used to his collar the same day he arrived. We did loads of training just with luring him and capturing behaviour. As he began to get used to our family, our routines and what was expected we upped his training, slowly started to practice in public places (all places where you would not usually find dogs and definitely no dog parks or walking where dogs could be found). We kept his training fun and never allowed him to practice any behaviour we did not want ie he was either crated or attached to a human and had no freedom to roam where he could get into bad behaviour. I firmly believe that if a dog has the opportunity to practice a behaviour we do not like then they will become experts at it. Problem is trying to fix it later so if they never got the opportunity then they never do bad behaviour. So now, my GSD is 2 years and 7 months and so well behaved and still has not destroyed anything or done anything that can be considered a bad behaviour - he would not know how to do it - he offers good behaviour all the time. He is a gentleman and I can take him anywhere knowing he will be very obedient.

I started on training as soon as we met our Malamute from the breeders house. He was jumping up on everyone and we immediately told him that wasn’t acceptable, and before the trainer brought him out of his pen I asked to go in with him first to get the initial threshold experience was human first and he gets invited or lead through. Took a couple of attempts but he got it.

Love Darby. So glad he found the right home where he can thrive. He’s is very handsome too. Dogs who are crate trained properly love their crates. One on my rescues put himself to bed every night about 9 in his crate. We had 3 large rescues, all loved their crates, and we very seldom ever had to close the doors and they used them every day. However, they were not allowed in each other’s crates so each had their “own” space. As to the comment about decor I get it - try 1 large and 2 extra large crates plus 3 extra large dog beds in the den. I referred to it as “The Doghouse”! When you love them it’s just the way it is. Our good friends and family members didn’t care because they were all dog lovers too.

Rescued my GSD/husky at 8mo so i missed out on the super cute baby phase but don’t regret it at all. I started with the biggest yt channels like zack george or whatever. Basically none of that positive only crap worked. Thank God i came across this channel 2 years ago. The practical application demonstration has been pretty vital. Awesome channel

See this comment is great to me because my aussie definitely takes better to positive reinforcement while there’s an Aussiedoodle that I’ve worked with thats instantly perfect with me while using Toms methods and he’s perfect. Every dog is different and it’s such a pain to figure out what works with each dog.

Got my puppy when he was 12 weeks old, he is about to turn 3yrs old this year, been at the trainers doing various classes twice a week ever since I brought him home…..basic obedience……rally-o…….flyball……agility…….and just started scent detection class. We are not competitive level at any of it but the most important thing is I have an obedient dog and we have a great relationship and bond and we have fun. I knew the breed I had and the size he would be, so started early. We have had struggles with dog and leash reactivity and a couple of other behaviours along the way, but have come out the other end well. Never give up, keep training.

I got a pit bull puppy given to me. They said she was removed from her mother at 4 weeks old. They never set boundaries, let her pull on the leash. The only thing they successfully managed was potty training. I know she is at least a year old now. I have crate trained her, taught her to sit, lay down, and wait. Treats make her automatically go for the treat instead of doing the command. In leash training, she knows to heel. But lately, she has been walking then runs to the end of the leash and turning around facing me. Sporadically, she will pull back, other times she will jump at me. I have corrected her, I currently use a slip collar. The problem I have is she does it randomly. I can walk her in my living room with no distractions, and she still does it. I don't get a warning before she bolts forward. I apply the correction and that is when she turns around and fights the leash or jumps at me.

I used to think crate training was something I would never do, but it's really helped with our kelpie x cattle dog pup. She goes in there for bed and throughout the day whenever she wants. It's also good because she's learned that the crate is where she should be calm, so when she's getting too silly, I can send her there for a few minutes to calm down. She'll usually come out and immediately go back to playing, but the few minutes in the crate calms her down enough where she isn't hurting anyone and an accident (like when she scratched my eye and bit my hand--separate incidents) can be avoided. I wish my household was on the same page with training though. I work with her the most and keep my family updated, but they ignore most of what I say or just continue doing what they want-- for instance, my mum lets Mazikeen do whatever she wants on a walk and then gets mad when she stops paying attention and Maze does something that hurts her (like suddenly lunging at a car...even though I don't have that problem when walking her unless mum has walked her the day before). I love the tip about socialisation! No one ever says that, even though it makes a lot more sense.

I appreciate the point that the whole household needs to be on the same page of how they’re training a puppy, because dad may tell her to do one thing, mom may let her get away with some things, and then little Billy and Sally will be teaching her to do bad things like drink from a toilet bowl or get into the garbage 😅

I needed this I have a 5 month old puppy that I’m struggling to teach Impulse control. I’ve always rewarded calmness but I can’t even pet him without him losing his mind and getting super amped up. He’s fine any other time and is perfectly calm but try to pet him and he starts jumping up and wiggling. And funny enough he’s a Texas heeler.

I think it can really boils down to just natural puppy behavior, they will slowly lose a little of that energy and you can work with them a lot more, I have a very active Chihuahua puppy rn and they still use impulse issues, along with MANY of my foster puppies, I think it will pass but definitely do not reward the behavior, they will learn eventually!

Started training my Border Collie straight away at 6.5 weeks old. Being such a smart breed and work motivated I knew I had to be onto it with her and constantly challenging her as well as physically ensuring she has plenty of play and fun times with my husband and I was super important. Crate training was essential with my girl and she has been so good and picked most things up fast! Just still struggling with loose leash and heel walking. She i great with myself walking her alone and my husband walking her alone but isn't great if were walking her together for some reason. But she knows all basic commands and does such a could sit/stay but also still working on recall.

Ace a German shepherd/ corgi mix was 41/2 months when we rescued him from texas. Now at five months he’s potty trained. Likes his crate more and more each week and has sit and wait down. But from time to time he likes to pull on his leash to the point of choking himself.

paused video to say... IMMEDIATELY upon arrival. 9 week old Golden. started training with small stepsthe minute we walked in the door. I was READY after watching your videos. Prepped before bringing our boy home and the study has helped me be a much better Mamma to my big love chunks! We have had outside potty success with just one mistake as soon as we got home. So far, so good! THANK YOU SO MUCH! 🐾👍🐾

My current dog and my last dog were both rescues and I got them at 5 months old. I started as soon as I got them. I was afraid I wouldn’t get that bond that you get from a 8-10 week old puppy, but they both did amazing. This was another great video by Tom and I’m so glad to see Darby heathy and happy with his new owner. 💕💕 Keep up the amazing work.

Sweet dog. We adopted a senior dog that was crate trained and I was always curious how it was done because she's very good about it. This video is very interesting. Thank you.
