Can you go further in explaining the assertive responses for the first few situations? I’d like to know “the why” for each response so that I can better adapt this practice and decrease the chance to sound scripted. Thank you for these very helpful tips and topics.

Absolutely, Krystal. Thank you for checking in. 1) Saying no to the requests of others. This is not about saying NO in general, but about being aware when saying YES would stretch us beyond our capacity limits, so that we can ensure that we are able to meet commitments that we agreed earlier on and are able to do so without burning ourselves out. Now, this doesn't mean that we cannot or should not offer a helping hand, but to do so on your terms. ... So you could say 'I am sorry I don't have the capacity to do ... today/this week.' and then add 'The earliest I could do is ...' and then offer a timeline that works for you. 'How does this sound?' Or you could say 'I am not able to handle it completely, but I do have ... time - how could I help you best?'

2) Disagreeing with others: Here, it's important to keep in mind that there is - in many cases - not the carved into stone truth. There are different perspectives and these can and should be discussed transparently and respectfully for the sake of finding the best possible the solution. So it is not being AGAINST somebody else but about OFFERING DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES to serve the overall goal. No need to play down one's perspective.

3) Requesting action: Here, the key, from my point of view, is to check: is the request realistic (or am I asking too much/in too little time or from the wrong person) and to ask respectfully - but that doesn't mean that we add words that make it sound tentative. Also, I recommend to le the other person know the WHY behind your request.

Sabine- Thank you for the investment of your time and expertise. Your responses have provided great insight! I tend to be loquacious, and to embellish my spoken communication with “disarming” adjectives in an effort to decrease the likelihood that I would be/sound aggressive. It has lead to great frustration, as you can imagine! I will keep practicing assertive communication and I will keep you informed of my success! Many thanks- Krystal
