When I seen videos complaining open shops being closed on Sundays and holidays and saying that's a reason that it's a terrible place, my reaction is: That is what makes this place civilized in my opinion. There are still actual holidays! When EVERYONE gets the day off and commerce isn't king. I hope Austria doesn't change in this respect.

Stumbled upon your videos - very nice so far thanks! But on this video: 1) No Cash? mostly on markets and street vendors. There are really only a handful of actual shops not accepting card 2) Opening Hours: well in my opinion this is directly corresponding to cost of labor aspect as well as to one of the reasons why vienna is one of (or the most) most liveable cities in the world. The laws protect most of the working people pretty good and make sure they can rest from time to time. Allthough i do agree that at least supermarkets should be able to open on sundays also. But also the opening hours themselves represent the utmost of all working people in vienna pretty good (meaning: not that many people work in exactly the times the shops are open and so are never able to go shopping) 3 and 4) well thats to taste. i get that coming from other cultural backgrounds this might seem very strange (vice versa maybe). But just to add: in most bigger cities in america it is considered rude to look people in the eyes too much while walking by - in vienna many people are doing that and its not a bad thing as long as it doesnt get creepy lastly number 5) I think you really miss the point here: Yes cost of labour IS expensive. But for a very good reason. it ensures that people get paid for work, contribute to social security and tax systems, and are compensated reasonably for example for driving around an hour each direction just to look at your fridge and maybe are not ABLE to fix it or the customer says: what? thats too expsensive and then you'd loose two hours of your time if you wouldn't get compensated well. So expensive cost of labour i think is part of the reason vienna is so liveable :)

I grew up in Vienna in the 70s and 80s. Seems it has not changed. Actually it has, back then everything closed on noon Saturday. I hope you don't make the mistake many foreigners do and it is not to mix with Austrians. Austrian are great loyal friends forever and help you understand and solve many of the points you listed.

If it is the most liveable city in the world where English is the global language, I am assuming it is also the case that English should be enough there to live? I am a graphic designer and my girlfriend is a game artist, having decent years of experience in Budapest and 3 years so far in the UK. But I do not have paper qualifications such as degrees, only actual experience from 2 countries. Is it something that can break the ice to get a job offer over there?

I rather like that most shops are closed on Sundays here in Austria. We have a lot of family members working in the restaurant business and as health workers who often work on Sundays. Finding a day where everybody can meet up at a family gathering is therefore already hard enough, sometimes not even possible. If now even all those working in stores won't have the Sundays off anymore it would become permanently impossible. And calling the work on Sundays voluntarily is misleading. Sure, some would appreciate the higher income, but many others would feel forced to comply with the demand for Sunday work for fear of losing the job or going to experience other disadvantages. Btw. in my youth (I'm 60 now) pretty much all shops closed at 6 pm and at 12 noon on Saturdays and Thursdays and had closed for a lunchbreak, typically from 12 to 2 pm I think and no gas stations sold food or other basics those days. Miraculously we survived.

People want to have their well earned time off with family on sunday . I want to see as little people working as possible on Sunday and also late weekends. Do you think shops are robots??

From my point of view, Vienna is clean and beautiful but I can’t imagine living there permanently. I really miss the communication with other people there. Also, the city is better for “early bird” people because most people wake up very early in the morning, while evenings are rather boring. My points rather go for Paris, which is much more exciting and entertaining!

In my contry neighbords came in my flat without knocking, it is not always nice.

I’m in the US and my stove had an error code. It was $120 to have a technician come out to tell me to replace the board would cost more than a new stove. It took him less than 10 minutes to diagnose the issue. I bought a new stove. Not much different than Vienna!

Cash-only - well, a lot of shops are owned by foreigners from countries where this is still the norm... plus, some smaller shops have lower costs when they dont have the expenses for a terminal and all that Opening hours - well, thats Austria... you can still get some extra stuff on Saturday and be fine during the holiday Small-Talk culture + Spontaneous - not really a con for me or other introverts who dont like random strangers talking to us? :D Cost of labor - well, thats because Austria is one of those countries that actually doesnt encourage modern slavery... which means that the workers are insured and all that, there is health care at high level etc.... which is sth that many countries in Asia or Africa dont give a F*** about (thats why stuff from countries like China is so low, cos they dont give a f*** about the welfare of the workers) so yeah, Vienna has some issues, that I can tell even if I dont live there, but these are just random points for the sake of a video, sorry guys :D

Hi guys, thank you for putting this on KZfaq. This is my second time experiencing my life here in Vienna and I can verify that it is true that Vienna has been voted again as the most liveable City in the world and so it is! I like many things and systems about this city. I have been here again for 14 months and now I am planning to go back to my country Malta within 4/5 weeks. I can say many good things about Vienna but I also can say some bad things about it as well which were and is annoying to me and the reasons which make me leave are the facts that finding jobs isn't easy because of the language, another factor is that the people here aren't friendly and they put me off too because they are so cold to integrate and, to be honest, I don't like their culture, especially food and the weather the rest is a beautiful city. ❤

Cash is good bcs banks have less controll this way an you have more controll :). Cant be a difference maker regarding quality of life.

Many people have cash in their pocket, its actually more private and more freedom to the individual...not the banks/Govts business what you decide to do with your personal money.Fully agree with you about closed shops on public holidays, its so fustrating especially when its normal since 20years in other countries to be open on Sundays. Totaly agree about the lack of friendly chatter with strangers, there is a dry coldness in Vienna...believe me people are warmer and more flexible down south in Kärnten...where they talk about the Vienese behaviour ticks...but honestly, its getting much better... i've shocked a few Vienese with positive chitter chatter, they dont know how to intialy react but quickly understand and are usualy grateful. Social flexibility is getting slowly better, the more the Austrians travel/live abroad the more they are changing. On the whole, its a small country so easy to control with official Gvt rules and regulations.... a bit to many rules and to much control?!?! Have you realised how many Catholic religious public holidays there are? even in Italy the Catholic HQ mist of these holidays are cancelled and not celebrated any more! Its a great video...glad to know i'm not alone with these points.

If Austrians did not have those traditional rules, lifestyle and discpline (many people call it coldness), the country would have not done well economically as it does right now. Cultural traditions in Iran and India, clearly, do not support for a healthy economy.
