What are some of the most common stereotypes about Sweden? And are the stereotypes you hear about Sweden true or false? More importantly, what do the Swedes think of these stereotypes? What are the stereotypes every Swedish person hates? These are some of the questions we're going to be answering in today's video, all about Swedish stereotypes. During the video, I'll break down 5 of the most common stereotypes and weigh in on whether there is any truth behind them or not!

The 5 Stereotypes That Every Swedes Hate:
1. All Swedes listen to Abba, drive Volvo cars and spend their weekends browsing and shopping at IKEA
2. Swedes love the cold - to the point that they don't ever even feel the cold! There's no such thing as bad weather after all, just bad clothes!
3. Swedes speak and sound just like the Swedish Chef from the Muppets - unsurprisingly, neither hurdy nor gurdy are words in Swedish, despite what you've heard!
4. Every Swede is mega rich and owns a summer house!
5. Everyone in Sweden eats fermented fish (surströmming) as part of their regular diet - not true I'm afraid! But in this video, I open the challenge up to you guys to see if you'd like to see me try it live on a video😱
Don't forget to subscribe so you're ready for new videos from me twice a week! And turn on that notification bell, so you're the first to know when there's a new one out!

Here in the US I get 4 reactions. 1. "You're Swedish? I love Abba!!" 2. "You're Swedish? Me too I'm 1/8th (or 1/16th) Swedish!" Alternatively "I'm 1/8th Norwegian - We're neighbours!!" 3. Interesting, I'm from Gotland and I'm going to go through this little list here. 1. I am indifferent towards ABBA, they where before my time and frankly I find the music to be a bit dated and bland but I don't mind listening to them a little bit here and there. 2. I have been to a IKEA store once my entire 34 year long life (good work posting this video on my birthday btw) we simply don't have a IKEA store on Gotland and I'm not on the mainland often. 3. I do love the cold, I dress up and go for a LOT more walks in the winter then in the summer. I think the 3 main reasons for this is the fact that the sun have an easy time burning me to a lobster and also that I hate sweating in the heat of the summer. For me there is something about the nice feeling of cold fresh air in my lungs that I just love almost the only thing that really wakes me up and making me what to do stuff. OH and bonus fact, I hate it when my apartment is warmer then 18c I grew up with winter mornings being 9-14c in my bedroom waking up and I did not even reflect over that. 4. So the Swedish chef is actually my second favorite Muppet after my spirit animal the cookie monster :D I love to joke around with his joke Swedish at times just being silly. I kind of like that stereotype as an outlet for some goofiness. 5. I am sad to say I am piss poor for Swedish standards... had it not been for family I would really struggle to have food all month but hey I got a apartment with a kitchen, a shower and a warm bed at night just for existing. Thank you Swedish social security system. Living on Gotland I don't see any single point to having a summerhouse unless you are one of the very few that live in the old town part of Visby and want some variation in the scenery. Bonus facts, I despite living on a island hate seafood of any kind so Surströmming is out of the question and yes I do have a volvo :D Being 2 meters tall sort of limits what car I can fit into

Yeah the ABBA thing........i don't mind it, I mean they Are iconic but it's just as if the Beatles were the only british band ever. What I read is that the Swedish chef is based on a real Swedish chef, who was to appear on an American TV show. But he got nervous and started to speak some gibberish, that was a mix of English and Swedish words. He told us all about it in an interview in a magazine several years later. I don't like fish in general, so I never ever tried surströmming despite being from Ångermanland. But when I was a kid, there were annual surströmming parties in our hamlet in every August. My brother and I who didn't eat fish ate hotdogs instead. Down in the southern parts of Sweden, it is more common to eat crayfish and have crayfish parties in August.

I have noticed that most people love the sun and warm weather... personally I get headaches from sunlight and melt in to a puddle if it is warmer than 18C. So I guess I am a stereotype of a swede... except that I loathe snow. Just the cold would be one thing but the snow is IN THE WAY!!! My favourite time of year is three weeks in fall and three weeks in spring, when there is no snow, it is around 15C and I can actually enjoy being outside. Unless it is raining.

I'm from Sweden here so I'm gonna shary my views. :) 1. I accept ABBA as good vibing music and can listen to them but prefer other music.. not just because I'm born in 1985 and had parents listening to rock.. Queen however is a band I have many records of but also the german band Rammstein and alot of EDM music. 2. Can't argue with that one.. "A true Swede have shorts and t-shirts even when it's snowing!" :P I prefer the cold before the heat but jokes aside.. if you ever come to Sweden during July you will see more Swedes at the park, benches or outdoor seatings than ants on a logg in the forest. Swedes generally are suckers for the sun due to the fact that we are a nordic country with less sunny days than most and therefor we bask in the sun... me however can't stand the heat as much so I prefer autum or the winter and have both fans and aircondition going at the summer. :) 3. The Swedish chef kinda sounds like he's got a development problem and yeah.. doesn't sound as much like Swedish. 4. We have kinda high wages but then again the taxes are high as F so we pay around 60+ % of our salary before it even gets paid out to our account -then you have extra taxes. 5. Surströmming is kinda like moldy cheese and something that needs to be noted is that it's irritating to see reactors taste the strömming just plain. You need to eat it with the right condiments (example: Potatoes, union, chives, sour cream and hardbread). You wouldn't eat a block of rockfort cheese so why would you try to eat surströmming like that? I can add a #6 as well: The candy Swedish Fish comes from Sweden. -Nope.. we have candy that looks like fishes but the brand Swedish Fish is not our doing. Just like our snack kalled "Finska Pinnar" (kinda like a stick bread that reminds of bagels but are hard) or the licorice candy "Turkisk Peppar" (though I believe it comes from Finland) is not a Turkish candy.. it's just named in that way. :P

Thanks for weighing in Jon! Completely agree with you about ABBA! They certainly deserve the credit due for making their mark on the world and they've got some enjoyable songs, but there's other options out there!! and you're so right about Swedes wearing shorts in the snow😳😱 it never fails to amaze me haha And that was a good sixth one actually! Well, all of us certainly do NOT love the warmth. Well, yes, to a certain degree, OK. However, one vacation I had sunny weather and 30°+ all 4 weeks. It was the worst vacation ever! I hid in the basement for 4 weeks straight! Over 25° and I start feeling bad. You can cope with cold by putting on more clothes, but there is no escape from the heat! Spot on when it comes to the "Swedish chef", though. According to SCB there are 580.000 summer houses in Sweden. Not all are owned by Swedes, though. I have tried surströmming. Hahaha!!! Your video really. made laugh and made me also smile! A big smile! Let me see: I actually love Surströmming because my parents are from the North of Sweden. My husband hates it. He was born and raised in Stockholm. IKEA is very popular, that's for sure. I have mixed feelings about IKEA. My best friends in Florida - when they heard me speak Swedish - finally understood that it sounds nothing like the Swedish Chef. LOL! But I like the Swedish Chef, he's funny! Yes, we have a countryside home (I don't remember the word you used, sorry) and an apartment in the city. We're not wealthy, just economic. It may sound strange having to places, but that's how it is. I grew up with Abba, but it was kind of shameful to admit that you liked their music. I do like them, but I was a dedicated Duran Duran, Depeche Mode and Kim Wilde fan. Nowadays, Muse is my one and favourite band. I think the winter is beautiful, but I hate shovel show. And I hate being cold. But warm clothes helps. You just have to learn how to dress for the weather. Mind you, even I make mistakes and coming home with freezing feet. Stereotypes though, are pretty funny. I have that kind of sense of humour that I don't get offended. I find it amusing. When I studied in Sydney a long time ago a friend from Hong Kong asked me if Polar Bears walked on the streets in the city. I laughed a lot and he kind of looked a bit embarrassed, poor guy. But I explained: No, they don't. And I've only seen Polar Bears on the zoo. Thanks for an amusing and interesting video! Greeting from a Swede :)

Fun fact: Older people in Sweden sometimes eat pickled herring on a weekly basis (my grandma used to do it). It used to be a sort of simple but tasty lunch to eat pickled herring, potatoes, sour cream, onions and chives with some "knäckebröd" on the side. This tradition is also honoured by some university students (especially in more posh circles or traditional student organisations) and then it is sometimes referred to simply as "en lunch" (as in if someone says we can meet at my place at 1:00 pm for "en lunch" it would mean specifically the pickled herring dish) and would also include some shots of "snaps" and singing (of course!).

YES! - I want you to try herring! - at the right time and in the right way and preferably in the right place. 😀 The right time is the third Thursday in August when it premieres, or later in the autumn. Then the fermentation process is complete and the fish is ready to be eaten. (not rutten as in many youtube videos) You will learn the right way to eat surströmming if you eat it in the right place, in the north. I suggest along the coast of "Norrland". On a side note I've managed to convince people that we have lynx rather than cats because the polar bears eat cats and the all mailmen have to go around armed because moose have a kick that will lop off a limb and they're very aggressive and territorial. It seems some people will just buy anything if you start slow and build up (or maybe I'm the one being counter-trolled, not sure). My favorite one is all Swedish people have a sort innate ability, like a bat sonar, that allows them to navigate any IKEA flawlessly. We even coined the term IKEA sherpa.

Course things have changed ... big time, I'm sure. Course, the trick is the notion of swedes hating some stereotypes. To give you some idea how things have changed; a very popular "sex" movie of the 50s was a movie called "I am curious yellow" and "I am curious blue". These were 3 hour long epics that were political satires in Sweden but "sex" movies in America because of 2 minutes of bare boobs about 2 hrs in!! How times have changed indeed!

We had an American visiting once. He saw blond and blue eyed people everywhere, which became a bit embarrasing after a while; I, who happened to be the host, have green eyes and I had very dark hair back then. As regards the surströmming thing: You can always save yourself by asking them to make a surströmmingslåda. We have never had surströmming or anything near it in my family, but the older relatives (and yes, my family is from the north of Sweden) obviously had occasional surströmmingsfester. One of the relatives didn't like surströmming, but my greatgrandmother made him a surströmmingslåda and he liked it. Personally, I'd rather try stekt salt sill med löksås instead. Very salty when not used to it, but I like it, even if I know I will be very thirsty for the rest of the day. Ok, now I've done what I can to save you. If anything bad happens to you - don't blame me!

@@JustaBritAbroad "Låda" in the Swedish cuisine means that you cook it in the oven, usually in what becomes baked egg (äggstanning in Swedish) when ready, but, depending on what you make, you can also use (tomato) juice if you make a korvlåda. A not too qualified guess is that låda comes from the fact that one needs to make it in something that can stand the heat in the oven. We say eldfast form or ugnseldfast form in Swedish and probably needless to say it has to be lined before the grub enters the oven. I think surströmmingslåda was with baked egg and onion (and the fish of course). There are many kinds of lådor waiting for you discover and enjoy!

About ABBA... Its a funny stereotype, given the fact that ABBA was in fact bigger outside Sweden then in Sweden. ABBA is something that hand and has an specific following in Sweden. The ladies loves their IKEA and Ullared ;) The cold stereotype is in fact hold by "sörlänningar" as well. Lots of "Stockholmare" believe that Northerners like cold weather. No, as pointed out, we know how to cope with it but we don't particularly like freezing (odd, right?). Summerhouses can be fairly cheap. Its all down to what you prioritize, tbf. Not that its for free, but most families can afford it, would they like one. As pointed out, surströmming smells... well like rotten fish. But it taste okay. There is a rather large portion of the population that defines it as a delicacy, which is a tad strange given its rather mediocre taste. Its edible, that's about it.

My least favourite stereotype is a dark one. I'll censor some words just in case they're banned on this channel. In the 60's when the birth control pill came into the market the world was skeptical. But Swedish women embraced it. And that has lead to the stereotype that Swedish women want s*x all the time. That we're always h*rny and will sleep with anyone. I have encountered foreign men who believed in this stereotype and that is scary because suddenly I'm in a situation where I might get R'd simply because of an old stereotype. It's VERY uncomfortable to be around people like that.

Well, Volvo is quite common in Sweden. I personally can talk about ABBA, and don't mind, but I loathe the Pewdiepie and Swiss Chocolate questions. Many Swedes like the cold too, but not in Stockholm. We love spring, but many like the cold too. But I have to protest about the Swedish Chef. He's our national treasure! We don't play hurdie gurdies, but the word is Börk! If you try Surströmming, don't try Surströmming like an american! Find a real Surströmming eating family and do it for "real". Jamie Oliver did it the right way and sort of liked it. At least he didn't vomit. The only Americans I've seen that could do it the youtube challenge way was George Forman and William Shatner. Respect!

It surprises me to learn that Swedes get asked so many questions about Pewdiepie. I get that he's a big name in the internet world, but I didn't realise it had bled out so far into normal questions about culture for example! Interesting to hear that you're an advocate for the Swedish Chef though! I've actually not really ever seen the Muppets, so its not something I'd ever have thought to talk about in a video, before I started getting countless comments on other videos from Swedes saying how much they hated him haha Thanks for the tips about surströmming though! I've got a few ideas about how to bring the video to life, and of course it needs to be a little bit dramatic and entertaining to encourage certain people to watch, but rest assured, I'm going to do it properly!

Sur in surströmming, is pronounced suer which means sour in Swedish.

@@JustaBritAbroad I hope you could handle the smell. In Norway they have fermented trout called rakfish(pronounced rahk-fisk).

Swedes don't just listen to abba, they also listen to Roxette, ace if base, and they have some hidden gems in their music which include songs from Veronica Maggio, Lill Babs, Tages, Lena Philipsson, Peter Joback...

Hi, I have to comment about temperature. When I see people dressed very warm in the UK I ask myself what would they do in Sweden when it really is cold? Your comment about no bad weather, isn't that English? Ikea, I disagree. It's in the UK that people are crazy about IKEA. To me IKEA is Sweden abroad. The place where I can get Swedish food. That is ironic as the food at IKEA have been made at IKEA Central kitchen somewhere in Central Europe. Thank you for a great video. I am actually in Sweden right now.

thanks for watching Bosse! the saying I was talking about was "det finns inga dåliga väder bara dåliga kläder" and its very typical Swedish! its not something we say in England! I must admit, I don't really get all the hype about IKEA food. especially people in Sweden that take a fika there. Why, when there are so many local alternatives?! haha glad you enjoyed though and have a great time back in Sweden!

My only gripe is when people "know" things about Sweden and won't accept that they are wrong. 100% of the time it's an American and I don't know WHY it's so hard for them to admit when they are wrong.

yeah that's an interesting one! I read another comment where someone said they'd been told by an American that we spoke French and German in Sweden and when they tried to clarify that wasn't the case they wouldn't have it. seems a bit odd to me? when you've got a local telling you its not the case, how can you deny it?😅
