Honestly, SO many people need to hear this, especially all the infrequent-shampooing cultists. Yes, we get it, you can go months without shampooing. But some of us do need to shampoo every other day, if not everyday, and it’s n o t wrong. Let’s all just do what works best for ourselves.

I absolutely LOVE using a shampoo brush. I could never get my scalp clean enough without one, even though I always need to double cleanse my scalp. Oily skin + hard water = constant buildup. PS, oiling the lengths of hair before using a clarifying shampoo for the scalp can reduce potential damage to the hair.

This! I normally apply a hair mask (usually because I need to detangle my hair when wet) and then shampoo my roots only rinse then condition and when needed do a apple cider vinegar rinse

@emkn1479
@emkn1479 Жыл бұрын
@@tessahugo1700 whatever my normal shampoo is, but also cycle in a chelating shampoo (I find mine at Sally’s) specifically designed for hard water. I find that products with silicones or too many polyquaternium ingredients quickly build up. For a cheap option for deep cleansing I find that Tresemme Deep Clean 0% works well. I scrub my scalp, not the lengths, and a shampoo brush is a must.

I’ve never loved you more! I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist ( hairstylist) and esthetician for 17 years. In 2005 or 2006 there was a curly girl book about curly hair that was a huge hit. The book condemned shampooing all together and said to only use conditioner instead when washing and you’d have beautiful, frizz free curls. Hair would have less frizz bc it was oily, layered in product buildup etc. Scalps were very red and irritated, lots of breakouts and dry patches. I know all my good life long female friends got it in their head from this book that shampoo was bad. So sad. Shampoo people! You’ll feel great! Promise.

@@jhwilliams6550Same. Because of that book I avoid sulfates and silicones which was a game changer for my fine, low porosity tightly curly hair. I learned more about how to take care of my hair from that book than in a decades of going to professional stylists. I stopped patronizing them.

Wish this came out a year ago, lol. my mom is disabled and I took over helping her shower when she moved. She had so much scalp build up that wasn’t taken care of, I felt so bad for her. A good apple cider scalp scrub once a week for a few weeks, a clarifying shampoo as well as patiently combing her hair to lift the dead cells and oil gently- it was a tedious and long process but it made my mom feel human again. Saving this in case it happens again!

A related topic - scalp sensitivity. It’s physically painful to scrub my scalp. I think I deal with hypersensitivity in general (e.g., I’m “hyper-ticklish”). The sensitivity can be exacerbated by Malassezia growth, I think - years ago switching to Nizoral shampoo 2x/week and that helped calm the sensitivity a little bit. It’s certainly a struggle to balance scalp health with fine, fragile, curly hair.

Found a scalp scrubber for $1.25 at Dollar Tree…works great. Also, I’ll put shampoo on my finger tips and rub it through out my scalp while my hair is dry. Then add water to my hair and use the scrubber followed with a rinse. Helps concentrate shampoo at the scalp. Color my roots every 6 weeks for years now. Shampoo everyday…no way I can not wash my hair after working out.

I used to have dryness, itchiness and dandruff (since college age), then I started Nizoral. Washed with it 2 times, poof gone! I still use Nizoral once a week for maintenance, tho if I just use regular shampoo for weeks, they still havent come back. Felt like magic lol. But now first time in my life my scalp gets really oily. At first I thought it was a diet thing, maybe the hair supplements causing it (stopped using them). Also this taught me if your scalp gets all oily, it takes more water and shampoo to lather and get that cleaned out 😅 I started using salicylic acid leave on treatment before shower (like leaving it at least 3 hours upto sleeping with it and washing in the morning). I think it really helped with cutting down the oil buildup between washes. I've never been a no-poo girl, even though I have curly hair, had dryness/frizz (all those CGM rules blahblah). No way with the dandruff I used to have lol 😂 Tho I never washed my hair everyday, I mean my 2nd day hair usually looks best anyway. I think I'm just gonna add one more only scalp wash over bathtub as well. Seems like this is the way.

Thank you so much Dr Dray for the advice. Would you have any advice for best conditioning methods for african-american type hair that has to be washed 2-3 times a week to prevent build up? I feel my hair is always so frizzy when I wash more often

I've been using a scalp mask weekly for my drandruff that has salicylic acid, pineapple enzyme, and piroctone olamine in it and it's made such a huge difference in my hair, i also use a chelating shampoo since i live in a hard water area which helps massively too

Great vid, love the haircut! What can we do for hair shedding? I wash my hair every 2 days, just focus on my scalp with shampoo and very gently rub my head to avoid a lot of friction then condition the ends. There's always a bunch of hair in the drain. 😞

This video is super helpful. I tried the once a week wash but I feel like it messed up my scalp. It’s been itchy ever since. Now I’m washing it more frequently to get back to healthy. I like the Brigeo Scalp Revival Shampoo. I’m using it once a week only and regular shampoo the other days.

Thank you Andrea. My daughter & I are both dealing w/scaling scalp buildup, bumps & patches of large dry hurtfull scabs over hair follicle strands. I also suffer from BP230 which is an added problem. Tried almost all of your suggestions so far, but will shampoo more frequently, as you suggest. I also used Neutrogena coal tar shampoo & the handheld scalp scrubber. Didn’t help & going on over a year. Luv you! 🥰

I stopped coloring my hair a year ago and my gray is growing out alot but I can vouch for the fact it feels so good on my scalp to shampoo every other day with deep cleansing shampoos and I don't have to worry about fading hair color. My scalp got alot healthier. I have psoriasis so the hair coloring was so bad for me that I had alot of hair loss. That has gotten better alot since not coloring. If I go past every other day shampooing then my hair roots start to hurt literally and burn. I use Nizoral (reg) shampoo alternating with a regular one. I condition only the ends. I also started Rogaine a year ago and helped my hair line come back.

I have an oily scalp. I was washing every day and saw too many youtubers saying it was not good to wash your hair every day. So, when I had a visit to my dermatologist, she asked how often I washed my hair. I told her what I had been trying. She saw sebum buildup and told me if you have an oily scalp you have to wash your hair every day! I've gone every other day and that's all I can bear.

Had bad breakouts and oily dandruff for forever. After lots of mediocre natural and at home stuff. Finally i went to the dermatologist i got an antibiotic that cleared it up in a week. I soon discovered that scalp care with the at home routine such as t sal is maintenance for the scalp after my antibiotic. The antibiotic was a jumpstart i needed to let the routines be effective. They werent mediocre it was just not the right situation kf use. It became preventative and maintenance instead of treatment. Maybe in mild cases treatment but if its affecting you like me to where i gave in to see the dermatologist i would recommend the derm appt. Then follow what i did if you have something similar. I have wet wavy/dry curly hair and am mixed.

Very informative as usual. Thank you. Couple of questions for you regarding hair. This could be a couple of videos 🙂 1) How necessary are conditioners. How long to put on scalp. How to identify good ones ? What ingredients. 2) Do you recommend hair mask over conditioner ? Any recommendation for leave in conditioner 3) Can I just use like regular salicylic acid face wash on my hair (like the laroche posey) 4) Why can't I just use my body wash on my hair ? Are the ingredients in shampoo different. 5) I am south asian and I have found that my hair is pretty dry even if I use a good conditioner. And no product out there does a reasonable job of keeping my hair not dry. I have tried expensive products like moroccanoil (which has very little actual oil). The only thing that works for me is a couple of drops of oil. Of late I have started using rosemary oil. I read that there is data to show it promotes hair growth. Any thoughts on this please.

Same for me, I resisted using dandruff shampoo for so long because it strips all my pink color out, but using Selsun Blue 2 or 3 times a week (I used to use shampoo only 1 or 2 times a week) has really, really improved my itchiness and flakiness. I've just resigned myself to re-dyeing all the time. 😅 Worth it.

I found a coconut oil treatment at the body shop that made my hair AMAZING. I made the decision to leave it in my hair occasionally and then started realizing that when I wasn't at work I could just rinse my hair and add more. Here's how I saw it. The oil blended with the oils on my scalp, so as I rinsed a lot of it would go down the drain. The dandruff that I got was so extraordinary. I skipped right over head and shoulders and went straight to the coal tar stuff. I understand it might be unhealthy but it itched so badly. Lesson learned (my head itches now)
