If you're an Industrial Engineer, you should have the skills/knowledge needed to land a job in process improvement. A certification won't help much (in my opinion). Seriously, unless there is something specific you want to do that the certification will give you, I don't see the value. A Green or Black Belt certification would help enhance your IE degree but it may just be a situation where your resume isn't reflecting what employers are looking for. For example: On your resume/CV; be sure to provide 2 - 3 bullet points for each company you've worked. Those bullet points should state something you've improved: efficiency, costs, inventory...etc....be succinct! You can elaborate if you get an interview. BUT be sure to state the METRIC you've improved. For example: "I reduced inventory costs from $4.2M to $1.4M in 8 months..." Showing this type of information on your resume is the REAL VALUE! I think that was very good advise by Virtual Kaizen Coach. I do have some suggestions for you since I had your same situation when I came to Unites States as Industrial Engineer almost 15 years ago. I started with CQA, then CQE, followed by CSSGB, CRE and CSSBB. I wanted to go for more certs, but there is no additional value to do more. I have been employed in Aerospace industry since then. Currently I'm working in one of the best companies in that industry (most probably the best one, no mention name). Hope this helps you. You can easily pass all of them in your first attempt if you study the correct way. If you have additional questions, please let me know.

I thought I would join the conversation and add my experience. I've been an Industrial Engineer for just over 20 years now. Depending on the company you work for, management may suggest that you get certifications because it looks nice and it might be deemed important on some level. Again, depending on the company your work for, they may not truly understand what Industrial Engineering is, but they may be aware enough to recognize what an ASQ certification is. I know that sounds strange, but it happens. I guess certifications sometimes become the "popular" thing to do. I agree with Coach, your Industrial Engineering skills and knowledge should be enough.

Apologies but I don't keep abreast of all the current providers. I believe IASSC has a list of certified providers on their website....hope this little bit of information helps and again, apologies for being able to provide more information.

I’m not familiar with that organization…For ASQ, you can find retired questions for their green belt if you scour the internet…you can find a few for free (like 10 questions then they want you to pay)…SSGI may have some retired questions floating around but if you’ve purchased a practice study course from them that has questions, I’d think (again, I don’t know) those questions would be similar to the actual exam questions. In my ASQ Six Sigma Greenbelt study course, I scoured the internet and curated approximately 500 questions and includes those in 5 simulated exams that are timed follows the same computer based testing format you’ll encounter when you visit the prometric testing center. Plus I give you some inside tips so you’ll prepare the right way and know what to expect when you arrive…there were some surprises that kind of shook me up - like the actual size of the testing area..I was cramped and couldn’t fit all my study materials..than impacted my time…hope this helps…if you want to check out my site (no pressure!) - here it is: www.learnkaizen.com/

Self study and then use that knowledge to improve the business. That’s what I had to do as a green belt. It wasn’t easy but I learned a ton and worked some great projects.

Hi. I would start with small project, small area, small scope. Implement learned , improve area. Move to other small area. By learning and improving skills your projects will get bigger. Try to convince management about SS benefits by showing results. Management support is key for sustaining changes. Would this help?

fightwithbiomechanix finding a project would require leadership support and a solid framework and process for finding and prioritizing projects. To quantify a $100,000 project would require an understanding of the business and where the cost savings or cost avoidance of $100,000 is being lost. There’s also improving a process that nets $100,000. It’s not an easy question to answer without more detail around your business and processes. Hope I’ve helped with this brief response. When it comes to consulting, you really need to know your expertise. If you want to charge a business a fee for your expertise, it’s good business to know what you’re talking about and that comes through experience. At least that’s my opinion. Gain some experience, find out what you like and are good at, then triple down and learn as much as you can on the subject. Use what you learn on the job and get better at it....then consult, coach, train.

@@learnkaizen It's this (asq.org/cert/six-sigma-yellow-belt#prepare-for-the-exam) the correct certification for Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt? because it doesn't have "Lean" on the name of the certification

Can you search out lean six sigma on their site? If not, then it may not technically be Lean Six Sigma...however, be sure to look at the body of knowledge - I would think they have lean as part of BoK.

That's a difficult question to answer without knowing your level of knowledge in Lean and Statistics. If you don't have any expense in Lean and/or Statistics - I'd start with Yellow...you can find free Yellow Belt study material with a quick Google search. Then go Green, Black, Master Black Belt. I finish my Green belt part with my university tomorrow but I don't feel ready without my excel guidance that my instructor provided us. I could do it with it but its a lot of info to memorize. Also, if my courses are tailored for ISAAC would I still be able to pass ASQ?

It shouldn’t matter where you receive your certification…the main thing that matters is your ability to use the tools learned to improve business processes. If you can prove that, you don’t even need a certification.

I’ve never been through IASSC, so I can’t speak to the differences.
