Ways to Turn Belly Fat into Body Heat (brown fat activation) - Thomas DeLauer
Cold Therapy
One study, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, looked at 12 young men with lower-than-average amounts of active brown fat who were asked to sit in a 63-degree Fahrenheit room for two hours a day over the course of six weeks
They burned an extra 108 calories in the cold compared with normal indoor temperatures - after six weeks their bodies were burning an extra 289 calories in the cold, prompting researchers to hypothesize that the exposure to lower temps increased the activity of a gene that converts white fat to brown
www.jci.org/articles/view/67803
Why This Is
A study published in the journal Nature found that low temperature exposure causes stem cells to form brown fat instead of white fat
Specifically, to induce adipocyte browning using bone marrow (BM) derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), there is a temperature differentiation at 32 °C instead of 37 °C (lowered from 37 to 32 degrees)
The low temperature promoted browning in adipogenic cultures, with increased adipocyte differentiation and upregulation of adipogenic and thermogenic factors, especially UCP1
www.nature.com/articles/s4159...
Fasting
Fasting-induced adipose-VEGF induces M2 macrophage activation, which triggers WAT browning
www.nature.com/articles/cr201...
Ketosis
A study published in the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology found that a keto diet increases brown adipose tissue mitochondrial proteins and UCP1 levels in mice
Mice were put on either a keto diet or a regular chow diet - in the keto group, blood glucose levels were 30% lower while D-β-hydroxybutyrate levels were about 3.5-fold higher
Median mitochondrial size in the interscapular BAT (IBAT) of the KD group was about 60% greater, whereas the median lipid droplet size was about half of that in the chow group. Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation proteins were increased (1.5-3-fold) and the uncoupling protein 1 levels were increased by threefold in mice fed the KD
AMP levels were 60% higher in the KD group and cAMP response element binding protein was 2.5-fold higher, suggesting increased sympathetic system activity.
demonstrate that a KD can also increase BAT mitochondrial size and protein levels.
The KD increased markers of sympathetic activity (cAMP and CREB levels) in the BAT of the mice.
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
HIIT
A study published in Diabetology & Metabolic Syndrome looked at the effects of aerobic training (15) vs HIIT (15) in female adolescents
The session of aerobic exercise included cycling at 65% of their peak heart rate (HRpeak) for 40 min. In the HIIT group, exercise included six bouts of 1 min at 85-95% HRpeak separated by 1 min of recovery
Levels of expression of irisin in skeletal muscle increased significantly after a session of HIIT (p less than 0.05), while aerobic exercise no effect on irisin levels
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
Exercise causes muscle cells to release a protein hormone called irisin - Irisin acts upon white fat to alter it by giving it properties of brown fat by increasing the number of mitochondria within the white fat cells, changing the color of the fat cells to beige cells - essentially mimicking brown fat’s effects
www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti...
Turmeric
A study published in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications found that curcumin promotes browning of white adipose tissue in a norepinephrine-dependent way
Specifically, curcumin promotes β3AR gene expression in inguinal WAT and elevates the levels of plasma norepinephrine, a hormone that can induce WAT browning

I started implementing cold showers every morning after learning about Wim Hof. I have pretty bad anxiety and it's starting to dip into depression. I gotta say, it helps a lot. I wake up, use the headspace app, read the Bible, pray, and then have a cold shower. I feel like a new person. It's fantastic.

Good to know, my wife is wanting to work on weight loss before we start trying for kids, and she has anxiety that often regresses into depression. I’m curious if a cold shower will help her out in that way as well as the benefits from this video.

@@romeotango5597 I have been depressed about 2020 and the death of sanity. the cool showers have certainly helped. If you aren’t shivering, it’s EXCITING coming out of a cold shower. Start with a regular warm shower, then get cooler bit by bit. Had a stroke once and can’t take the cold all at once. After 10 days I shower in water that’s cold enough to not need ice cubes if I were to drink it. Breathe deeper in the shower to trigger extra body heat and do Wim Hof breathing out of shower.

My bloated stomach has stated to shrink, and I feel more clear. Many of my friends have gotten knee and shoulder replacements, take pain killers , meds etc, and I was afraid I would have to go that route. Now I'm confident that I can be pain free and lose this stubborn belly fat, and not feel that I'm over the hill. Thank you Thomas for sharing your wisdom with us!!! You are awesome!

Our Rishis and Saadhus made us several of these points our way of life. For example, we use turmeric in several of our dishes. We are advised to fast weekly and during 'Sankashti', making it a religious thing (health benefit + good karma). Rishis and Sages used to take cold showers in early hours like 4.00 AM. Sukhasana /Padmasana was how we used to sit normally before chairs became mainstream. I am proud of my country's ancient culture. And thanks to you, Tom for backing this up with your modern research.

A weight loss pill you can rely on is not an easy thing to find. At best, you’ll have more than one trial and error experience before you finally hit it big with a product that will deliver. Fortunately, we did a lot of testing and research work for you so that you can focus on other things in your life without worrying about your struggle with weight loss. What sets our product apart from others is its all-natural ingredients (that are proven effective by doctors) along with clinically tested side effects. It’s truly an effective herbal extract.

Instead, I'm falling asleep fast and sleep tightly for a solid 8 hours. Also I noticed I don't get cold almost at all in the beach even after swimming, while others are shivering. Could of course be coincidence, but it's still an interesting observation. I'll see how far into the autumn I make it without blanket.

I read several years ago that capsaicin converts white fat to brown, so I put cayenne in with my eggs every day. Also, my fave salad dressing is a great way to get your brown fat up: turmeric, hot Hungarian paprika, black pepper, ACV, lemon juice, and EVOO.

I've been binge watching your vids now, started a mixture of omad and 20/4 fast, it has only been a few weeks, but I've reached goals that previously took me months of hard work. I feel more stable than when I was on my antidepressants, my cravings have vanished and I'm more productive during the days. Next week I'm going to try the 3 day fast, wish me luck! Why isn't everyone fasting? I feel so good and am less moody.

Ok, you got me to comment twice. The other channels I watch are all MDs, holistic drs.and Docs of chiropractory. And a few universities. This is the best video I have seen yet. Good work on the research. I watch these channels because I want to learn more about the body and brain. Your advice on your channel is good in general for the brain besides keto and losing weight. Our brain function increases as we implement your suggestions, which changes our bodies and minds. I enjoy it. 👍💜😀

Stephen Strange 8 years of bio/chem classes to get my PharmD, combined with years being a personal trainer, 3 generations of gym rats, 16 years of fitness training myself. I have experimented with endlessly diff techniques on myself and others but have only an idea of what works and why. The truth is there’s no substitute for experience which is why I value Tom so much. He has been doing keto much longer than I and does the footwork, sifting through journals to report to us in a credible, condensed way for busy viewers.

Thomas, i know you have a ton of keto videos also, but maybe you can do a vid on the best tips to get into a “DEEP KETO” state. Maybe with an example of what you would eat in a day when pushing to get into a deep keto state. That would be very helpful, I’m sure everyone who lives a keto lifestyle would appreciate that! Thanks for the vids, life changing!

Ashik Kumar do the 24 hr fast but sip green tea with salt in it if you must. Then when you finish your fast (assuming you’re pescatarian) cook a nice piece of wild caught Alaskan salmon in avocado oil on a med heat and finish with butter, the salmon is packed with micronutrients to recharge your body. Cook a side of spinach as it has only one net carb and is rich in iron, potassium, and magnesium. All nutrients you need after a fast

Hey Thomas! I was wondering if you'd be interested in a challenge to make one single meal that meets your caloric needs and your macros? As a very busy person I personally prefer to eat only two meals per non-fasting state, and would usually try make one meal that is everything I need for that day and just eat it as needed throughout my non-fast period... Up for the challenge? I'd be interested to see how you would tackle this.

Great stuff as always. I like to add a little turmeric into scrambled eggs. Easy way to consume and tastes great. And an even easier way to do the 24hr fast with no calorie reduction would be to eat til 3pm one day and then after 3pm the next. At least that way you aren't trying to fit 2 days of food in one day or going a whole actual day with no food.

Hi Thomas love your video and props for sharing your journey!!! Thank you so much! I love intermittent fasting. It finally enables me to loose weight after having tried a zillion diets and only ending up gaining weight during these. So not yoyo-effect. Now it seems like I have reached a plateau though. I exercise about 5-6 times a week. I walk at least 10 steps a day and I switch up my intermittent fasting routine. At least once a week I don't eat for 24 hours....mostly I don't eat for 18-21 hours........I try to break the fasting over the weekend but I usually end up eating during a 8 hour window........The past two weeks I'm HUNGRY, HANGRY. RAVENOUS ......I even wake up in the middle of the night feeling very hungry......I now really count the hours until I can eat and have a hard time fasting. I don't gain weight but not loosing fat either. HELP!!!!!!
