He is so genuine about his story and a true example who uses his experiences and creates a masterpiece! 500 Days of Summer is my favorite film because it perfectly explains our distorted interpretation of a situation due to our limited perspective. He does it in such a phenomenal way.

I don’t think it’s necessary to see Summer’s perspective. There are many occasions in the film in which we can understand her. There’s an specific event that is rarely mentioned by fans (although the scene itself is often referred) which is when during the expectations x reality scene, Summer says that Tom could be a great architect if he really wanted. She clearly felt he was stagnated in his professional life and couldn’t feel any security by his side on the long run. And his idiotic answer that postcards were forever, while buildings weren’t, which is followed by the way she reacts to that makes it clear. Yes, despite having said many times she didn’t want anything serious, she was clearly in a serious relationship with him and even afterwards she still manipulated him emotionally (such as during their common friend’s wedding). Also, who invites the ex who suffered so badly after the breakup for a party in which you celebrate your engagement? Summer is a selfish person, she is flawed, which is why her character is deeply interesting. HOWEVER, she could have tried to commit with Tom if he had shown to have any kind of maturity and long term goals (beyond “let’s love each other forever”; this doesn’t put food on the table, kids). She wanted a man, with goals, with an actual career. Tom had nothing of that. No wonder she was so pleased with him when she saw him wearing a suit and talking about looking for a job as an architect. If he had done that 200 days (!!!) earlier, she’d probably have stayed with him. He should have taken the clue to that very, very early in their relationship, because in another scene that is never discussed by fans, when they are still meeting each other, she asks why Tom works with postcards when he could do something better, and he just ignores the real meaning of her question. She even quit her job after a few months working there, showing that she saw it as something temporary, not worth her life. Tom was so stuck in his self-pity that he didn’t notice it. He should have talked to her, explained that he’d find a better job and act accordingly.

i think thats the magic of the movie. yes we know tom is an idiot who fallen in love as well as summer who is selfish for just testing the waters on someone who wanted more than a casual relationship. but summer insisted she wasnt looking for that. he fell too hard for her and didnt see the red flags until it was too late. but i can relate because sometimes when youre depreived of social interaction and love from the other gender it can dilute your view of the most mundane thing a person does.

I highly doubt Summer was just "taking a chance on Tom" and was also in a relationship with him. The person who wound up with her isn't a huge career rich guy. He just happened to be the right guy for her, right enough to change her entire worldview and marry.

she was obviously in a a serious relationship which lead to engagement and Scott/Tom was the oats on the side... thats why she didn't want it to be a relationship... IMO

You might be right but apparently the writer doesn't implicate that or isn't trying to on purpose.
