Dollar for dollar, a Weber kettle is the best BBQ you can buy. Grill, smoke, roast, whatever. Thanks for the video.

I have a $700 traeger for many years and got used it for briskets, ribs, steaks etc. I bought a 22 inch Weber for $60 at Walmart and a chimney starter for $15, and use for the same things. Lately I have using the Weber kettle only. Love the more richer flavors.

Great demo, thanks for sharing. I've used Weber kettle and Mountain Smoker all my life, always happy with charcoal and wood taste. Recently, I've been looking into pellet cookers for more even heat cooking. Your demonstration answers a lot of questions for me, like "How Green Is My Valley?" P.S. Here are a couple of notes I'd like to share: In my 50 some years of charcoal grilling I've found that the chicken is better with the bracket and without the beer can. Also, I always season the inside of the chicken and collect the juices by sitting the chicken and bracket in a pie plate with a little chicken broth added. This provides a really great smoked flavored broth for an additional great taste. Thanks again, I really enjoyed your video and the great comments from your viewers.

Excellent video. You did your best to make this a fair competition. There are many different opinions and techniques for outdoor cooking, but there is a reason the Weber Kettles are so popular, and why the basic design has not changed in many years. A little more work, but a labor of love. I just made a 4lb. pork loin today on my Weber, and it was fantastic.

Bought a Weber for $100 last grilling season and a buddy of mine bought a pellet grill, he asked when i was going to upgrade to a pellet and i said I’ll upgrade to another Weber before that clunky thing. Can’t say your grilling when your grill needs a electric plug in.

I find the smoke is a lot better tasting on charcoal if all of the coals are lit. I'm pretty new to smoking meats, just got a WSM for $200 about 6 months ago. Also, to do indirect on the Weber I use fire bricks and make a wall, I think I will combine that with your method of no grill grate. Good video thanks for the share,.

What kind of pellets did you use in the pellet pooper? Was the temp the same in both? Doesn't seem like apples to apples. Also, were the peeps blindfolded? People eat with their eyes. I could imagine that people could see the color and be influenced by that physical appearance. For the convenience, a loss by a score of 8-10 doesn't seem too bad. For the record, I do not have a pellet pooper. I have a Pit Barrel Cooker, A Chargrill kettle (I do the snake method with it), a propane and an electic smoker. I love the food all of them.

Had a Traeger, and other then for cooking fish, I was a little disappointed in it. The flavor wasn't not close to the Weber Smokey Mountain for smoking meats, especially long low & slow cooks of Brisket or Pork Butts, and it didn't grill even close to my Weber Kettles. I gave the Traeger to my sister for her Jersey Short House. She uses it mostly for sea food, which it does well at. The Webers are more work, but the finished produced is well worth the little effort for me. All my best to you and yours...

Totally agree on the flavor George! Although I am curious to see if any of the other methods of adding smoke can make up for the pellet's lack of heavy smoke. Think I'll have to add that to the episode idea list!
@NikonPhotoHawk

I found that while these pellet cookers can produce good meats, they simple don't match up to a wood/charcoal smokers. A friend who's good at machining, welding, etc., added a try to add wood chips to his Traeger, and while it does add a little more smoke, it's still does match up. Please don't miss understand me, these pellet grills have their place and are very convenient, and are perfect for someone who needs a easy set it and forget it type cooker. And they're great for people who only want light smoked flavor on their meats. I'm just saying that the charcoal/wood smokers produce a more pronounced wood-smoked flavor that I prefer. All be best...

I have a Weber kettle I’ve had for years, works great for what it’s basically designed. I also have a Big Green Egg, it works great too, as does my Treager pellet grill, little Smokey Joe Weber kettle, and Camp Chef camp stove. Most any style cooker will “do it all” to some degree but most will do some things better, or quicker or easier than others. Personally I like to cook on all of them . Not everyone has the time, space or funds to have more than one. I do think it’s unfair to be critical of the person who prefers one or the other. Calling a pellet grill owner lazy for example as this was a comparison of cookers not Cooker Owners! Mikey

I so agree with you....I much prefer the work and taste over the convenience of the pellet grills. I had a cheap Akorn Kamado and that thing heald Temps very well and never disappointed when it came to taste. I have yet to be fully satisfied with the pellet grill because it just can't create that real smoke taste from lump/charcoal and real wood. You can add smoke tubes and use competition pellets all you want. It doesn't taste as good. It's a freaking crock pot to me. Leave it and forget it. That's what I do inside the house 🏠

Kamado blows away the pellet grill too. I have a RecTeq 590. They really are just outdoor ovens. I tell everyone that it's a pretty good outdoor oven, a decent smoker and a terrible grill. I have had Webers for over 30 years. They rock and I will always have one available. I do love my Big Green Egg for low and slow though. I cheat and use a DigiQ for temp control. I recently cooked two whole shoulders on the egg and didn't crack the lid for 16 hours. It stayed at 225, used a minimal amount of lump and it's quiet. My RecTeq is too loud to even carry on a conversation around AND it blows ashes all over the place even using premium pellets. The pellet grill gets to cook veggies, sausage and hot dogs when I don't wanna fool with coals. Having said that the BGE with FOGO loaded in it produces minimal ash and I can get multiple cooks with one firebox full.

I think my heat was to high because the skin was still fatty and chewy. I wanted to the skin to be crispier. The breast was perfect tho. I have no idea why people deep fry them. Good quality video but flawed test. You don't cook the same on a pellet grill vs a coal fire. That is like asking if a fireplace or an electric heater warms your house better but the electric heater can only use as much energy the wood you burn in the fireplace produces. And as an owner of both, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you had the smoker vent closed on the pellet grill...less heat got to it and why you didn't get any char.

The old saying that goes 'It aint the arrow, it's the indian" applies to about a million things including grilling ... as with most other pursuits these days the equipment overshadows the activity itself, thus we get nothing but meaningless gear comparisons that don't mean jack shit. Right now there's probably an old guy somewhere in the middle of nowhere Texas doing BBQ on some ugly home made monstrosity and it will be superior to what you cranked out of your $500 whatever grill. That's because he put the time and effort into learning the ins and outs of cooking, not getting all caught up in the meaningless aspects of the equipment itself. They all make heat in some form or another, what YOU do with that heat is where real skills come in. If you suck at cooking on a $99.00 grill, you'll still suck at it on a $500.00 grill. It's like golf, fishing, whatever ... you gotta put your time in, there is no substitute for that.

I STARTED with a Weber type grill. Moved up to a Char-Griller offset smoker, not I own a Broil King offset smoker. Pellet grillers are for: -lazy guys -out of shape guys and injured people (yes, BBQ'ing is hard work when you are monitoring, lifting, cleaning, etc) -old people -WOMEN -and not if your are in an area that consistently looses power, like Florida. If your electricity goes out, it will NOT work. So, you're out of luck for cooking your food I think I'd get a pellet when I'm old. But for now, I like the pride and accomplishment of doing my OWN cook and managing EVERYTHING from start to finish. Otherwise, I might as well get "liquid smoke" and stay in the kitchen doing what women do! And that's just … cheesy.

This was not a fair comparison as you are treating the pellet smoker the same as your kettle. If you look at the Traeger site or any pellet smoker of your choosing, you will see that the temp for chicken is pretty much always 350 or above. My chicken doesn't look pale like yours when it comes out of my Rectec pellet smoker nor is it as dry as yours was. I would put my roast chicken, chicken wings, ribs, and brisket up against our local BBQ shack any day. Try to think of a pellet smoker more like an oven with smoke. The biggest complaint I have with a pellet smoker is you don't get as much smoke especially with higher temps, but it is enough for me. Just like the kettle, you need to learn how to use a pellet smoker and it is very different than your kettle. I will say that none of my family liked the first Turkey I did in my smoker, but the second time around we changed the wood and cooked another bird in the oven. It was unanimous from all our guests that the oven bird was not nearly as juicy or tasty as the smoked one and I didn't tell them which was which. I mention this because I'm not sure what you used for pellets and if it was the same wood used in the kettle, but it certainly makes a difference. I only use the Traeger Wild Game blend now and I use it for everything. I also have a Weber One-Touch Performer and only use mainly for Paella because my large Paella pan fits the grill perfectly. I think (I say this because I haven't done a side by side comparison) I prefer the Weber for grilled meats, but the inconvenience makes it the last tool I use unless I have time to babysit it. BTW, I also have a gas grill and will often smoke my steak at 200 for 45-60 minutes on my pellet smoker and then sear on the gas grill, which is absolutely amazing. Trying to convert a purist to pellets is like trying to convert a Ford guy into a Chevy guy. I would never try nor would I want to, but I feel the need to comment when the comparison is not fair.

Exactly. It was quite obvious that the chicken in the Weber was cooked at a higher temperature than in the pellet grill. I cook my chickens in my Rec-Tec pellet grill at 375 and the skin comes out great. For more smoke with pellet grills you can also start out at a low cooking temperature such as 225 degrees where the pellet grill makes much more smoke, then when the internal temperature of the chicken reaches about 130 degrees you crank up the temperature to crisp up the skin and finish off the cook.

Kevin, I couldn't agree more with your feedback. I am a Rec Tec / Weber owner, as well, though I own a 22" Performer. To me, there are things that the Rec Tec does very well and there are things that just taste better on charcoal - then there are things that taste awesome when you bring them together, like your pre smoked steaks. Aw yeah...

Kevin Meier I couldn't agree more with your comment. You said that the only complaint is about not producing enough smoke, this issue can be resolved buy using a smoke tube, it's about $12-$18 on Amazon and it will change your life (:

Nope, not 'mad' at all, but some people will use this video when researching pellet smokers and I don't like to see inaccurate information guide them. I also hold no stalk in comments from someone that has nothing intelligent to add to the conversation and just flings out comments designed to insight an argument. I remember comments like this when friends had flip phones and argued that my iPhone was crap......... I guess time always tells.
