Breville espresso machines come with some pretty ordinary 54mm filter baskets. Or are they even ordinary? Today we put one under a microscope to compare it to a precision IMS filter basket, and see if there are actually any differences. We also ran some head-to-head bottomless portafilter shots between the stock Breville filter basket, and the 54mm IMS precision filter basket. I would love to try similar products from VST, but VST doesn't current make any of their baskets in the 54mm size....

I have the same basket upgrade and found the same sort of results re grinder settings. I also got the shower screen - I don't recommend this - it actually lets water through too quickly and stops it being evenly distributed, leading to a consistent channel being dug on the right hand side, where the water flows into the head.

The other problem is the depth of it. I usually dose 19 grams, this one is rated from 18-22 grams, but most likely you need to dose 20 -22. When doing 19 grams no matter what I did the puck would always be soggy.

Really need to upgrade the grinder to get the best out if these aftermarket baskets. The best advice i've received was from Hoon's Coffee: single-dose to avoid the machine baking your beans in the hopper. I can say though as former owner of a 64mm grinder and italian brand machine that nothing can improve a bad grind. A set of 54mm flats will even vastly out perform the built in grinder

Something I’ve noticed about my prep with the IMS is that it’s easier to tamp. I don’t usually dose more than 14.5g, and the Breville basket’s tapered sides make it hard to tamp that much (or, that little) down. I’ve found it a lot easier to tamp with IMS’s straight-sided basket, although the jury’s still out on whether my overall shot quality has improved.
@ryansmurda1552

I absolutely hate that tapered side basket they give you with the breville. It's made for 18 grams, but I usually dose 15 myself. Any more, it's hard to tamp, and coffee gets everywhere. I just got my machine about 2 weeks ago. This basket is definitely something im going to order.

I started using this new IMS filter basket. One thing is I need to start using few more grams (from 18 to 20) to cover more the pocket. The basket says it can go up to 22. What is the “ideal” grams for this and the breville setup? Also when using 20g I am left with some water on the top of the basket (after the shot is done). I did feel a huge improvement on the shot, I am just having to almost re-learn how to pull a shot with this new basket. I do have the bottomless portafilter as well.

I am using 22g with a Vario-886 set at 5R and still not filling the basket. I'm getting on average 57g output in 25-35s and pressure gage registering just below max grey area with a dark roast coffee on a Breville Infuser. Looks like the basket could take 24g. But after pulling shot the puck expands to fill basket. Should also mention have the IMS screen too and using NPF aka bottomless portafilter.

Thanks for putting this video together. I bought the IMS filter and noticed shots running quite a lot faster. After stopping down the grind, I got it to extract at similar time. However, I’m finding the espresso tasting thin, with less texture and mouthfeel. Also, with my current dose (18g), the extracted puck also comes out a lot more watery; there’s often a small pool of water on top of the IMS whereas my stock Breville basket comes out fairly dry. A minor point but worth noting. Going back to stock basket to see which I prefer.

I recently purchased the IMS filter & shower screen and found the same result, the shot ran a lot faster so I stopped the grind down two steps but found the puck much more watery after extraction compared to the stock filter. The espresso itself also tasted thin/weak with less overall texture. I just changed back to the stock filter but left the shower screen on and to my taste the shot is much more enjoyable. The puck is also much drier from the stock filter.

Thanks to your review, I purchased that IMS 54mm precision filter basket for my Barista Pro, and it arrived today. Had to do some grind size adjusting and volume, whereas I normally dosed 18 gm of beans with the stock Breville basket, now 20 gm. But the IMS basket is a bit deeper, so it accommodated 20 gm just fine. Oh, I’m now also using the Crema 53.4mm puck screen. Here’s my concern: The new IMS precision filter basket is VERY tight inside the stock Breville 54 mm portafilter-I struggle immensely to remove it after extraction. Is the stock portafilter just a bit too small for the IMS basket? If so, can you recommend a suitable replacement? Perhaps I need to switch to a bottomless portafilter? Thanks for any advice or direction. EDIT: I just ordered the Crema 54mm bottomless portafilter. And then I learned that it includes a basket. However, since I have already adjusted the Barista Pro to the new IMS basket, I will use that basket for the time being. This barista stuff is quite the adventure for me.

Just got my IMS b62.52th24e filter basket and run it through running water and it seemed slower than orignal Breville basket. However, when I put it in boiling water and run same test, visually about the same as Breville basket. I run it through the unit with 18g in and 36g out and measure the same time as OLD breville basket (24sec on 1st drip) however i grounded finer. This means that IMS basket runs faster. The following day i grounded finer but this time time decreased to 21s. I think that IMS basket has to be "burned In" first to achieve consistent results? In old basket i never experienced this kind of inconsistency.

@TheAnim3Freak
@TheAnim3Freak 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree on your statement regarding OEM usually having higher quality than 3rd party. It might be the case if its a component that is usually exclusive to the OEM but not something that is more generic like the filter basket. If its something more generic like the filter basket in this case, the OEM will be able to cut cost on the item in turn increasing their profit margin. Especially if the OEM thinks that the user will likely change that component if they want to. While a 3rd party are required to proceed with either a cheap replacement or an expensive but better component which IMS/VST/etc precision baskets are opting to do. In this case, the 3rd party will likely have higher quality so that they can steal the customer base from the OEM.

I'm still dialing it in, but initial results are not too encouraging - I went a step finer and got a very fast shot that was also very bitter. So much so that even a milk drink with it was bad. I'll try lowering the temperature and yield (it's a pretty light roast so I've been brewing it at max temperature setting and high ratio 18g in/40g out). I haven't been getting any bitterness from the stock basket with these beans. Still can't imagine how grinding even finer can fix it...

@Nvlarr

@@CaboricanMan I have the same machine. I got my 14-18g ims basket off Amazon. It changed the game for me. Was able to grind finer. I bought a niche zero and it transformed the game. Then I got the IMS shower head and swapped that in as well removing the stock one. Completely changed the game. Equal water distribution (or more so than before). Definitely get a better grinder if you can. The separate sage one is good. Or for the barista express which I have you can take the grinder out and reduce the settings so it goes finer. Try that first. Also. A tip. When using the barista express I brew it by timing between 25-35 seconds and get around 9 bars consistently by holding down the perfusion button for the whole time then double tapping it quickly to stop the flow at about 2grams away from my desired output liquid level. Honestly COMPLETELY transforms the taste. If you let the machine do the espresso itself. The flow and the pressure is far too fast for the former and for the latter produces like 12 bars of pressure. Genuinely give this as go. I’ve used Lamarzocco £25k machines loads but I can by removing all the variables (good tamper, ims basket and shower head and niche zero) get pretty similar if not better coffee on my sage barista express. Because I’ve “completed it mate” haha

@slow_clumsy

Having it flow fast is actually a good thing, shows just how much the stock basket was clogging things up. No idea why you would switch back, grind finer whether that's by the outer burr or the inner. If you have maxed out both burrs then it may be your beans that are the problem, not the basket, grinder or anything else. You shouldn't be anywhere near maxing out your grinder if you have proper beans.

There are two baskets, 15-18 g and 18-22 g. For an 18 g dose, which I prefer, I use the 15-18 g basket. I would use the 18-22 g basket for someone that likes a stronger dose.
