In this video I show how to setup and use the 55W xTool P2 laser engraver, and give my thoughts on how it performs. The P2 is a relatively sophisticated desktop engraver that has a powerful 55W CO2 laser and dual 16mp smart cameras for accurate positioning through xTool's creative space software, as well as a lot of great features like autofocus and automeasuring material thickness, a smartfill function for batch engraving, curved surface engraving, and automatic passthrough for engraving long objects.

I am not the typical fan of bells and whistles but liquid cooling and a few quirks actually make sense here. James, even in projects where you don't speak, there's always something intoxicating with watching your production. I will like to know what kind of metals and what thickness it can cut through. Keep up the good work James, you're an angel even though you're not aware.

Great review, just looked on the XTool site and a replacement CO2 tube is $630 when you are going to need one.

I believe the $60 lenses need replacing before the tube. I heard it’s around 10,000 hours but it depends on the conditions it’s used and maintained.

James, thank you for the video and review. Love the projects, especially the ukulele engraving!! How is the noise level of the P2? Is it louder than your typical laser like a GF Pro or an Omtech Polar, or is it about the same?

Hi JAMES, I did not see any metal engraving done on this laser… Did you try to do any color with stainless steel on the xTool P2? I am interested in this particular laser tool, and especially doing color on stainless steel. Thank you! Love your videos

Hi. Good question. I haven't tested any metals yet but I know from other creators that it can engrave steel. I'm not sure about colour engraving stainless, though, but I assume it can do that as well. With a diode laser it's just a matter of adjusting speed, power and interval settings. They sent me their roller and chucked rotary for tumblers and rings and whatnot, as well as the conveyor feed so I've got a couple more videos to make for them and will definitely try a few different metals when I do.

I think you engraved your logo at a low resolution on the wood or you enlarged it more than you should, can you test with vector files? that would give you the greatest definition

Hello James! I'm looking for an engraver that can put names on dental appliances like dentures. Do you think something like this or the Laser pecker can do this?
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 3 ай бұрын
You can engrave acrylic or porcelain dentures with this for sure. The LP3 and LP4 IR (infrared) lasers can etch some acrylics and most metals, which is basically just a light scoring and discoloring of the surface. They won't actually engrave and remove material. I've never tried any acrylics other than black and clear with the LP lasers, and the clear failed without using marking agents. Same deal with a fiber laser, although they can actually engrave any type of metal too, not just etching/marking.

@JamesBiggar Are you concerned with the xTool warranty? It does not inspire confidence. I almost bought one of these until I saw the length of the warranty, what it covers, and the cost of repair even with the xtool care for $300.00 It only covers "2 Warranty Events, Cost Effective The warranty events cover nearly 90% of machine failure and damage. xToolCare for P2 can help you save up to 60%.." My question is how do you like this 3 months later, and do you feel confident in the laser's long term usability?
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 8 ай бұрын
I've never been a stickler about warranties tbh. Never had to use one. Good eye for good products? Just lucky? Who knows. All I can say is out of the 15 machines I have now, it's the most impressive. Lots of power for anything I need to do, fast, can work more materials than the diode lasers, and I haven't had any problems so far. But it's only been a few months. I do think the work area could be bigger. 23.5x12" is kind of odd. But they sell a conveyor feed to extend it to nearly 10ft. Overall, I'm still very satisfied. As far as the warranty, I can't advise you on that, my friend. It's really up to you to weigh the risks, I'm not here to pressure you one way or the other. I'll have another video on the conveyor coming soon, if you want to hold off and see it in action again before you decide.

Does lightburn work with this machine?
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar Жыл бұрын
It does, but with limited features - for example it can only use the flat processing mode, no cameras, etc. But xTool's XCS software is free, easy to learn and allows full control of the machine.

@JamesBiggar oh ok that is good because I'm looking for something that I can actually use at it full potential. And from your video, this machine does not disappoint besides the price 🤣 . One last thing before I stop bothering you, does the anti freeze and water need to be swapped out, or once you dump it in, you don't have to worry about that?
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar Жыл бұрын
I think it would be best to treat it like a vehicle, swap it out every 4-5 years. Antifreeze can become more acidic over time and lose its rust inhibiting characteristics. Just be sure to use distilled water so there's less chance of contaminates messing with the laser tube

You didn't have to calibrate your laser?
@JamesBiggar
@JamesBiggar 10 ай бұрын
Nope. Done at the factory. As long as the shipper doesn't knock it around too hard, then you shouldn't have to calibrate your laser. But that's usually not the case. I'm one of the lucky ones: support.xtool.com/hc/en-us/articles/12823378816151-Calibrate-the-P2-Laser-Path?gad=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwoqGnBhAcEiwAwK-OkSYrslz2fwGE_aAIkMWYAdS92jpAtrnWYIA65avOW75KPl7mle83DBoC9ncQAvD_BwE

Well worth it. It's a commercial machine for business use that can do magnitudes more to make production easier and faster with more options for clients than other equally priced commercial machines offer. This is not a hobby machine, and it's priced accordingly. If you run an engraving business, which is a fairly profitable venture, then you'll get a full return on that investment in less than a year, and a laser like this will typically last for 10,000+ hours (roughly 5 years) or more.
