Had a vs bt1 back in the day done a crow cam & valve train package,pacemaker extractors & dual 3" exhaust made 155rwkw......🤦‍♂️

There’s a red vg in Perth made 300rwhp which is pretty impressive for the ole 5L they are definitely one of the nicest sounding v8s

The trusty old 304 . Cam should make a difference to it. Looking forward to seeing this build. I had a VS SS V8 MANUAL.

Yeah the Dizzy are in a shit of a spot, I remembering that I bent a long ring spanner just to get to the dizzy bolt along the fire wall

You don't come across these, looking this good. Most of them haver been flogged within an inch of its life. But you're right, the Iron Lions do have there own unique tone.

Cool build! I had an almost identical set-up we did to my old vp but had a crane 286 cam and made 259hp looking forward to see what the vr does!

Are you getting the heads shaved a bit to increase compression? What is the cam part number you are using? Thanks and good to see some Holden V8 content.

Mate what was the original cam you wanted to go with and what did you end up using here? I have a stock 5L Vs statesman with extractors and 3” single exhaust, what would you recommend without needing to machine heads? I’m thinking 4503 or 276 cam, any thoughts would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

I love the 5.0ltr! I had 4 x 5.0ltrs over the years and since have had all Ls1s and now have an LS3... At 221hp, even a stock 5.0ltr had plenty of power to have some fun with! Torque throughout the rev range was awesome! Exhaust absolutely MUST be perfectly tuned in these! A better intake manifold would be great! But even on the banana manifold, if you get a completely leak free, 2.5 inch exhaust, the torque will increase heaps! Netting more power as the revs increase! In a 4 speed auto, they should ideally shift from 1st into 2nd at 60km/h, and the shift should launch you from 60km to 70kmh! If an Ls1 is beating you at 0 to 70km/h then your 5.0ltr isn't running right! Trust me!! Exhaust velocity is absolutely paramount in these! You need low backpressure yes! But DO NOT go wacking on a 3 inch either! 2.5inch! And if possible, a better intake manifold! Anything else like stroker kits etc will only be hindered if you don't do these things too

@@johnboy5167 how many LS1s and 5.0ltrs have you had? I've had 9 (thought it was 10 but no i miscounted) V8s in 15 to 20 years! And 304 (they're not 308s but 304s) fuel injected V8s heavily rely on the perfect exhaust tune (not too big, not too small, and zero leaks). And with a stage 2 shift kit, yes, they are neck and neck upto 70km/h! I know this because I gave my VPSS to my Dad after I bought my VXSS and then dragged with him! It's not until after 70km/h that the LS1 really pulls away! That's because in powerful engines, lower gears are wasting the torque where as in less powerful engines, they're adding it. Anything after 80 to 100 the LS1 licks it no worries! But don't try and tell me I don't know something that's I bloody well do know out of personal experience either. 4th gear is 1 to 1 in most cars and its there that you really see what each engine can do, but in 1st gear, it's hidden and things like engine speed make more of a difference than actual HP! Hense why a kia sports wagon can almost keep up with an ss until you're basically breaking the speed limit

@@johnboy5167 and when I say 9 V8s i mean 4, 304s and 4 Ls1s... the 9th being my current LS3 (never had a carby 308 and never had a 6.0ltr either but I know my Ls1s and 304s mate trust me)

I sware Ive had a 10th but I cant think what it was now, but all I can remember now is 2 VPSS's a VP Calais HSV enhanced and a VP commodore with V8 option... they were all mostly slugs but the last 2 were thrashed, the 2nd VPSS had a 3 inch exhaust which meant it had no exhaust velocity (no back pressure which is good yes, but also no scavenging either so it lacked power)... but the 1st VPSS we mucked with the exhaust for ages trying to get it right (2.5 inch) and in the end we just welded all the flanges and mate, it went like a shower of shlt just from doing that! But like I said it also had a stage 2 shift kit, and I also got it before it had been thrashed too hard

See if they exhaust is wrong in those, it will do things like hit 2nd at 40km/h and then hunt, where as if its tuned right, it will hold 1st upto 60... and then with a staged trans it hit 2nd hard enough to push you upto 70kmh... hense why it kept up with the LS upto that speed

I look forward to seeing how much of increase in power these mods make, it's a shame you couldn't get rid of the restrictive bunch of banana's, but any increase in power is an improvement!

I got a banana manifold extrude honed by a bunch in Geelong increased flow to around 1300 cfm something like 280 a runner no matches done hear ... but works good for a factory look engine builder was going to cut off the neck and weld on a 90 odd mm throttle body . Thease days its a torque power dual plane its the tits

Don't forget the cam. And a twin throttle bodie intake off a earlier walkinshaw aswell. Then she'll boogie good enough for a good tuff reliable affordable to run street car.

I used to own one of these, was a normal vs 185i ss not hsv. Was pathetic to drive and V6 vn used to smoke me. I now drive an audi with half the engine and it leaves V8's for dead. 🤣
