I recently did rear brakes. Loosened the drum to remove rotator. Parked on my drive which has a similar incline. Put in N and depressed E brake. It didn’t roll but, I put my hands in the rim and rotated the wheel and sure enough she rolled a bit! I wish I checked to see if it was like this before I adjusted it. Best video I’ve seen on adjusting this drum brake. It really could take a few attempts to get it perfect. I wish there was an actual spec to go off of rather than tighten, don’t over tighten, then loosen lol

Thanks for the feedback. I also still need to look into adjusting the slack in the actual pedal. I've been told by several people that it can be adjusted without messing with the brakes at the tires. Something else to consider.

Great video for adjusting the e-brake shoes! In my case, I think a cable adjustment was all that was needed. My 2022 4Runner has always had a really weak e-brake. This was definitely different than the 2017 that it replaced. We bought both new, so no one had adjusted either one. Anyhow, I noticed that if I pressed the pedal all the way to the floor, the e-brake would eventually engage well enough to keep it from rolling backward on a moderately sloped driveway. So I knew the shoes were eventually engaging. After some reading, I found that there are cable adjustments both at the foot pedal, and under the center console under the cup holder area and the arm rest compartment. I adjusted it at the foot pedal, and the brakes now engage nicely at about 5 clicks. So long story short, if your brake engages all the way at the bottom of the pedal travel (no more clicks) - then a cable adjustment may be the better alternative to adjusting the shoes. In my case, I think the shoe clearance was correct, but the cable was adjusted too loose from the factory. To make the adjustment here, you have to remove the panel that covers the brake pedal area. Then use an open end 10mm wrench to hold the adjusting nut, while breaking loose the retaining nut. Remove the retaining nut, and tighten the adjusting nut as needed with a deep well socket. Then reinstall the retaining nut and tighten against the adjusting nut while backing up the adjusting nut with the 10mm open end wrench.

Just read the procedure in the 4runner repair manual. The actual procedure is a combination of both - cable adjustment and shoes adjustment.
@axios76
@axios76 7 ай бұрын
1. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL (a) Fully depress the parking brake pedal to engage the parking brake. (b) Depress the pedal again to disengage the parking brake. (c) Slowly depress the parking brake pedal using the specified force and count the number of clicks. Standard parking brake pedal travel: 5 to 7 clicks at 294 N (30 kgf, 66 lbf) If the parking brake pedal travel is not as specified, adjust the parking brake shoe clearance and parking brake pedal travel.

Great video, I have 60s and 50s classic with drums, I typically adjust that clicker when changing the shoes. Isn’t the low e peddle the cable adjustment? Just wondering, my wife’s 4Runner has a low e peddle from day one.

Good quick vid. How do you like the Kendas?
@DBCoffroad
@DBCoffroad Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I really like the Kendas. You really can't beat the price. Never had any issues on both sets i've had (33s and 35s). I have mixed feelings about the sidewall design. I don't hate it, just like others more. Mud 4/5 - Not a dedicated mud tire, but still very good for a Hybrid Dirt 5/5 - Haven't found any limitations Rocks 5/5 - Durable and grip well for DOT rated tires. Snow 4/5 - Deep soft snow they work really well. Icy Roads 3.5/5 - They are not quite as good as a 3 peak snowflake rated tire. But you could stud them if you really wanted. Hope this helps!

Could this be a reason why I’m hearing some brake drag/ squealing? I recently got my e brake adjusted by someone else and I have squealing from the rear end at low speeds. Maybe tightened too much? My pads and rotors are good front and back.
@DBCoffroad
@DBCoffroad Жыл бұрын
It’s possible. It’s seems like there is a fine balance of not enough and too much. Maybe try loosening it just a bit and see if the noise goes away.
@MarioLoco03
@MarioLoco03 Жыл бұрын
dumb question, but is the break disengaged while you are making the adjustment?
@DBCoffroad
@DBCoffroad Жыл бұрын
Good question! Yes it’s disengaged. It seems counter intuitive. Like you should set it halfway before making the adjustment. It’s just like the normal brakes though that have a little resistance by hand, but don’t engage until you hit the brake pedal while moving.

Are those kenda klever R/Ts? How are they on and off road?
@DBCoffroad
@DBCoffroad Жыл бұрын
They are the Klever R/Ts I actually really like these tires. On road they are great. A little road noise which is typical with any Offroad tire. But handle well. Offroad they are pretty good. Grip well in rocks and dirt. Not the best mud tire, but the mud here is Reno is like peanut butter and just fills the tread and causes most tires to lose traction. Snow is pretty good too. They are probably not the absolute best tire out there, But I got them for the price. And they are much cheaper than any other big name brand with similar tread type (Nitto, Goodyear, Toyo etc)
